"Idol" Voters: What You See, Not What You Get

If you voted for "American Idol's" Michael Johns last night, you could have been influenced by a performance that was never even in the show.

At the end of the show, just before the voting began, Ryan Seacrest threw to a tape with highlights from the contestants. Michael Johns actually seemed better than when he sang earlier in the show. Fact is, it was better, because producers used Johns performance from his rehearsal earlier in the day.

Interestingly, after Johns performed live on the air, Paula remarked that she heard Johns during rehearsal and he had been a lot better then. So voters were left with the impression Johns was better than he actually was.

Ditto David Archuleta the week before, when he forgot the lyrics to "We Can Work it Out." When "A.I." played the highlight tape at the end of the show, David was seen during his rehearsal, when he was much better.

"Idol" tells us the entire montage at the end of the show is of rehearsal footage -- they simply don't have the time to turn around that video using live performances.

Watch the video clips of the actual performances and the highlight tapes of Johns and Archuleta. What do you think -- ok or deceptive?

19. You don't really think Simon & His Company care about the contestants or the public, all this contest comes down to is how much MONEY He & the network can make. Somebodys got to pay for Simons multi million dollar car collection. When will people realize that AI is all fixed & is a scam.

21. Pefect example of what it's like to know how things really operate and then, at some arbitrary weird time, watch a clueless media outlet "uncover" nothing and write it up as a pseduo scandal.

22. As long as they show rehearsal footage for ALL the contestants, then I don't see anything at all wrong with that. I can understand how impossible it would be to show clips of all the live performances.

23. This is pretty desperate muck-racking, even for you guys. They'v ALWAYS used rehearsal tape. Geez.

24. If they've always used previously taped footage from rehersal, then I say it doesn't really matter. As long as they aren't giving special treatment

25. TMZ, don't feel bad, I didn't know this either. But it all makes sense now because you can tell there is a bit of difference sometimes. Like last night - I could tell Michael Johns performace was better on the clip - but I liked his performance anyway not sure why the judges didn't.

My cable box went out last night right when AI and DWTS were supposed to come on! Luckily I unhooked it and hooked directly to my tv and was okay.......woo.....that was close.....I can't miss those shows.

26. The whole show is rigged from start to finish. Out of thousands who audition so many are sent packing. The thing about that is only 500-600 actually see the show judges. If they were really looking for talent and not looking to make money off of the rejects shows, there would be no guys in space suits of women who dress up like Big Bird. There certainly wouldn't be that many people who can't sing being sent on to the judges. This show has been and always will be about the dough-re-me.

29. WHO CARES ABOUT THIS!!!!!!!AMERICAN IDOL IS ALL ABOUT LOOKS INSTEAD OF SINGING ABLILTY. TAKE JENNIFER HUDSON, SHE WAS VOTED OFF THE SHOW AND LOOK AT HER NOW SHE WON AN ACADEMY AWARD AND IS IN THE SEX AND THE CITY MOVIE. I LOVE CARLY AND MICHAEL JOHNS.........THEY ARE SUPER COOOL BUT THEY MIGHT NOT WIN BECAUSE OF ARCHULLETTA'S CUTE SCHOOLBOY LOOKS AND CHARM.
