"Idol" Voters: What You See, Not What You Get

If you voted for "American Idol's" Michael Johns last night, you could have been influenced by a performance that was never even in the show.

At the end of the show, just before the voting began, Ryan Seacrest threw to a tape with highlights from the contestants. Michael Johns actually seemed better than when he sang earlier in the show. Fact is, it was better, because producers used Johns performance from his rehearsal earlier in the day.

Interestingly, after Johns performed live on the air, Paula remarked that she heard Johns during rehearsal and he had been a lot better then. So voters were left with the impression Johns was better than he actually was.

Ditto David Archuleta the week before, when he forgot the lyrics to "We Can Work it Out." When "A.I." played the highlight tape at the end of the show, David was seen during his rehearsal, when he was much better.

"Idol" tells us the entire montage at the end of the show is of rehearsal footage -- they simply don't have the time to turn around that video using live performances.

Watch the video clips of the actual performances and the highlight tapes of Johns and Archuleta. What do you think -- ok or deceptive?

31. WTF? We got the same type of show in Germany and they always put together the highlights. What a shame...

32. Seems as if you don't like AI, #8 and others, why are you on this site? When you see the headline that says "American Idol", don't click on it and/or read it. Works great.

I agree with #25, I just hate that AI and DWTS come on opposite each other on some nights. Don't anyone scream at me - my dish dvr is on it's way!

thx

33. I'm not surprised at all, I've heard Simon say that their opinions are based on what they see and hear at rehearsals not at the live performance. The judges really cant hear the contestants very well when there are 500 people screaming for their favorites So it makes sense that they would use film clips from the rehearsals to enhance the quality of the live show.AI has some good talent this year but I think David Archuleta has the best voice.

35. Oh who cares as long as Jason Castro, David A, Michael Johns and Carly are in the final 4..

36. I couldn't even tell the difference, they sounded the same in each. Although, I do think it's lame that they do that, and they DO have the time to do it because it's done every year at every award show. they do red carpet interviews and then right before the award show they do a quick montage, and with AI DRAGGING out the show, they have MORE than enough time to do it, so.

37. I thought this was common knowledge. There seems to be a lot of attempts to create scandals where none exist. For example, Jason Castro and the orphans.

38. Okay, I'm relieved to read this because I thought I was going crazy. I knew he'd messed up that lyric when he sang live!

39. That's okay...I think both of them are terrific....I will be more inclined to vote for Mr. Johns though..because he is 29 and this could be his last chance....David is adoable and will do great....just have to make sure he gets rid of his Father...who is probably deending on this very talented boy to make the living for the family..I hope not and I hope his Mother will speak up for David in a private matter....This young man doesn't deserve this kind of distration..he is truly talented...But I still hope M. Johns' continues to get high marks...he is appealing...Good luck to all of them though...

40. I guess this would be a story if the people voting only tuned in for the recap. But that is not what is happening. So really who cares what they ply on the recap.

41. LOL, any hardcore AI fan knows that they've done this since S1. As major news outlet, you really should know this. There's no scoop here, nice try though.

42. How can it be exclusive if I read this in The Buffalo News' blogs at 10 AM, more than 3 hours before you?

43. yeah, you morons, they have done this since day 1; seriously. go back and look at ramiele's ending - the hair was not in her face in her performance. normally, it is not noticeable; but they have been doing that since day 1; do you really think they can string those things all together live at the last minute?

44. Sip ... If you are working in the control room of Fox's number one program, yeah, I think you should be able to pull a 20 second clip between commercials or during the next performance and have it inserted into a recap package all within a 2 hour broadcast.

If you can do that, you shouldn't be working in the AI control room, you should be working cable access.

45. Who cares? If a person votes on a contestant based only on the snippet at the end of the show, they're an idiot.
