"Idol" Voters: What You See, Not What You Get

If you voted for "American Idol's" Michael Johns last night, you could have been influenced by a performance that was never even in the show.

At the end of the show, just before the voting began, Ryan Seacrest threw to a tape with highlights from the contestants. Michael Johns actually seemed better than when he sang earlier in the show. Fact is, it was better, because producers used Johns performance from his rehearsal earlier in the day.

Interestingly, after Johns performed live on the air, Paula remarked that she heard Johns during rehearsal and he had been a lot better then. So voters were left with the impression Johns was better than he actually was.

Ditto David Archuleta the week before, when he forgot the lyrics to "We Can Work it Out." When "A.I." played the highlight tape at the end of the show, David was seen during his rehearsal, when he was much better.

"Idol" tells us the entire montage at the end of the show is of rehearsal footage -- they simply don't have the time to turn around that video using live performances.

Watch the video clips of the actual performances and the highlight tapes of Johns and Archuleta. What do you think -- ok or deceptive?

46. "How in the hell would they have time to piece together 20 second clips of their live performances TMZ? Don't be so stupid that would be impossible it's a live show!"

Hey, Bermylady, before you start calling folks stupid, you should think at least once - perhaps even twice! The football/baseball/basketball/hockey folks seem to have a pretty good handle on doing instant replay and a highlights reel regularly, and without having to resort to using footage of practice because it's just too difficult to represent the performances that were actually delivered, Kit has it right, FOX is doing everything they can to steer us to the performers THEY want us to vote for, regardless of what talent the contestants do/don't have. Check yourself before you put your ignorance on display for the rest of us to laugh at.

47. no they did not use michael johns rehearsal performance. i was at the rehearsal, and the performance they showed on tv was not from rehearsal. none of american idol is live, they performed once in the rehearsal, and directly after that they film their performances, which is before the show even airs. they use clips from the rehearsal though for some performances, but not from michaels

51. Funny - I came home just in time to watch the recap. Most sounded pretty good. Then when I watched the show back, several performances were off. I couldn't match what was in the recap clips to the performances. Now I know why! Yes, it is possible to grab/edit those clips during the performances in time to show them at the end, especially since there's so much pad (rolling interviews, chats with judges, etc.) between songs. But no harm done either way. Same singers. Gives viewers a bit more to decide with. I do think AI should disclose that the recap clips are pretaped.

52. This is ridiculous! I watch the show, here in Australia, and they manage to cut a montage of all the performances, by the end of the show. It's a relatively simple editing procedure, and if our little hack production can do it, here, then the much grander, expensive, American version can certainly do it. This is just PR rubbish, they want to steer public perception and blame it on imaginary production constraints.
