Suicide at Mel's Place

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ a construction worker committed suicide at one of Mel Gibson's homes today.

It happened at Mel's Agoura Hills home -- near Malibu. The construction worker was 48-years-old. We're told he hanged himself. The body was found by the job site foreman.

The Sheriff's substation in Lost Hills took the call at 8:07 AM -- that's the same station where Mel was taken after his DUI arrest in 2006.

Mel was not at the house when the body was discovered. A law enforcement source says no one from Gibson's family was living at the house -- it is currently under heavy construction.

The house is less than a mile from his church -- The Holy Family Catholic Church -- where Mel's daughter was married back in September, 2006.

Mel has never lived on the compound.

UPDATE
: Law enforcement sources say the body was found hanging in the addition to the home that was being built and was in "full-body rigor mortis" and the hanging could have occurred last night.

196. Hi there everyone,
I am saddened with many people in this universe. So many of you are trying to be smart instead of thinking empathy for his family. Committing suicide one has to feel deeply depressed and sometimes it can sweep over a person that feeling of helplessness and they just don't feel they are worthy of anything. Most likely he did not have it planned when he left home but no one will know this unless he left and note or gave some indication. Who knows if he left a wife or children behind but lets at least have some respect for his family. Quite frankly I don't care if its 'hanged ' or 'hung' the poor guy has taken his life. Perhaps it is cynical people like you that cause these problems because you have no empathy. I find you cruel and thoughtless. I don't think it is a time for smart remarks about anyone when a life has been lost. I lost my darling brother who took his own life. I hope people didn't have smart comments about the English like you people did. Is that how cold you people are? My brother had been shopping and he was feeling depressed at the time. Came home and took his life. I couldn't understand why he did the shopping first. I feel someone might have made an unkind remark that just tipped him over the edge when he was feeling down. I will never know. Some of you think you are soooo smart..

197. I really don't understand why it is so important that this poor man committed suicide at one of Mel Gibson's homes. It's really quite irrelevant and probably just a desperate attempt to "manufacture" news.

I would imagine a site undergoing construction would be quiet at night time and that's probably why he chose this place. The guy was probably deeply depressed and my heart breaks for people who suffer with depression ... Is is just plain cruel to judge suicidal people in the way some of you have done. You have not walked in their shoes, you have no idea how they feel.

Finally, I find the distasteful remarks about Mr Gibson's religion to be particularly disgusting. Show some tolerance towards others ... Although not Catholic myself, the fact remains that it is the biggest and most powerful Christian church on the planet. They are good people and don't deserve your caustic comments. Keep your ignorant views to yourself.

199. Come on y'all. He wanted some publicity. He decided he'd get national attention for once. After all, it isn't everyday a person can hang himself at Mel's!!!!

202. The last thing that went through this selfish, cowardly loser's head (not counting the noose) was probably something like "I sure hope they say 'hanged' and not 'hung' in my TMZ death blurb".

203. To the folks passing judgment on those who are making arguably humorous comments and/or appear to lack any kind of sadness as a result of this:

GET OVER YOURSELF.

People tend to deal with death in many different ways. Some wear black for the rest of their lives, while others get trashed and think about the time they were able to spend with that person while they were alive. Still others tend to detach themselves emotionally and go about their lives while various folks might choose to make jokes in light of the situation. Guess what? Short of showing up at this guy's funeral and urinating on the casket, none of those are wrong. Just because someone deals with death differently doesn't mean they're completely out of line... They're just out of line with what you believe.

That said, your opinion isn't worth anything more than any of the other opinions that are attached to this story. You really have no business telling people how to act in any situation. Instead, why don't go go someplace, light a freaking candle and sit in the dark while sobbing uncontrollably because some guy took the easy way out over at Mel Gibson's house just to show everyone how dramatic and sensitive you are. Meanwhile, everyone else will deal with these things in their own way. Some might hang out with you, while others will submit jokes to Jay Leno for the monologue that night. Worry a little more about getting your own ducks in a row rather than playing parent to anonymous people on a stupid message board.

Finally, I get angry when someone I barely know takes a dump at my house and forgets to flush because they're too busy fumbling around in my medicine cabinet looking for Vicodin. The thought of some selfish buffoon deciding to end their life on a piece of property I own (not them) would easily trump the non-flushing pain pill hunter. If someone needs help, they should get help. If someone needs to end their life, they should do it somewhere that doesn't involve me. If it turns out this guy did it for the sake of publicity, he deserves all the ridicule that comes his way.

204. Maybe he was threatened and it was better to be dead than to have to have dinner with Britney & Mel!!! hehe

205. I am hung. This guy was hanged.

206. I am a friend and coworker of said construction worker. He left a daughter and family behind as well as many people who cared deeply and looked up to this man. He was a twin brother and he will be deeply missed in our union and industry. He was a union 44 propmaker boss and worked on some of the largest and most successful films for at least 15 years. So he spent his life building sets to entertain you, all of you judgemental people. We can never know what makes a person take his own life, or that of another as well. Maybe that was the point he could no longer take and he happened to be there. It is of no large substance that it was Gibsons home . This man worked with many stars and they are clients like anyone else. Have compassion not criticism.

209. Was there a note saying 'This is for you Damian' nearby?

Posted at 10:35AM on Mar 20th 2008 by albert ross

210. No, Albert...the "dumbass" is correct. The proper term IS "hanged". Just wondering...who is the REAL dumb ass? (Also the correct way to spell what you were trying to say.)
