Cedars Fined Over Quaid Twin Screw-Up

TMZ has learned the state of California has fined Cedars-Sinai Medical Center $25,000 for giving overdoses of a blood thinner to three infants, including the newborn twins of actor Dennis Quaid.

After investigating, the California Department of Public Health found that hospital personnel failed to follow their own procedures for safe medication use, and that resulted in what they called "preventable medication errors."

As TMZ first reported in November, the Quaids' then-10-day-old twin newborns, Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace, were given an overdose of the drug Heparin. According to Cedars, a total of three babies were given doses of 10,000 units per milliliter of the drug, instead of the normal dosage of 10 units. Hospital officials said the children affected were all treated and did not show any lasting ill effects from the overdose.

In December, Quaid and his wife Kimberly Buffington sued Baxter Healthcare claiming the drug company failed to change the medication's labels to prevent confusion over dosages.

16. Cedars-Sinai officials said they have instituted a series of changes in its medication protocols and policies, and gave additional training to its nursing and pharmacy staff.

Higher-concentration dosages of Heparin have been "further sequestered" in hospital pharmacies, and only saline will be used for IV flushes in pediatric patients.

Langberg also said the people involved in the overdosing were "immediately relieved of duty" and "appropriate disciplinary actions are being taken."

19. I HAVE WORKED IN THE HEALTH FIELD FOR 12 YEARS AND IN MY EXPERIENCES THE ART OF CARING AND COMPASSION ARE GONE. I AM RETIRED NOW AND I AM A DYING BREED OF THOSE WHO ARE SINCERE IN THE ART OF CARING AND I BELIEVE IT IS OR WAS A GIFT FROM GOD. NOW WE ARE JUST A NUMBER WITH BUSINESS AS A PRIORITY. IT'S SAD BUT TRUE. SOMEONE HAS TO BE THERE WITH OUR LOVED ONES TO EVEN GET FAIR TREATMENT. EVERYONE WANTS TO PASS THE BUCK TO AVOID RESPONSIBILITIES.

21. It costs $25K just to have a C-sect baby! It should have been $25mil! THEN they might think twice before giving tiny babies the wrong strength meds. And whatever happened to the DOUBLE CHECK method everyone was supposed to be using in hospitals?! I thought all meds were supposed to be checked by two nurses after orders are given???

22. Hey, this IS a comment box ... and SC, #2, did make a comment ... Why all the fuss about this? I mean, SC, like I, obviously doesn't like when someone, and MOST people do this, misspells the word lose, or loses, by spelling loose, or looses ... It just shows ... I don't know ... illiteracy ... and, in this country, we should be, at least, educated enough to spell most words without the spellcheck ... I know, noone's perfect, but ... this bothers me, as well ... the word "loose", when used incorrectly ... I see it happen way too often ... Sorry for being leaving a comment on SC's behalf (or being judgemental ...) *eyes roll* ...

That's all,
CS

24. $25K is nothing to Cedars. Fine should have been a lot more, especially considering not one, but two tiny new borns suffered horrendous physical pain, and did not understand why they hurt so badly. It is heart breaking they were put through this due to negligence. I am thankful the babies made it through, and Dennis and his wife, Kim, will be able to be a part of these two precious little lives growing up. Bella

27. #23, maybe you shouldn't tell people what to do because ... uh .. wait ... what? That COULD get very dangerous ... telling people what they should and shouldn't do ... Know what I mean ...? *eyes roll, yet again* You'd better be careful ... if I were you ... HA HA ... mostly because you sound so illiterate, uneducated, and ... just dumb ...

29. The State has several options in reprimanding a nurse for a medication error. The NURSE made the error. NOT the manufacturer or packager of the product. This is nothing new; it has been the exact same way forever and a day.

Heparin is bottled the exact same way across the country. Other nurses seem to be able to give the correct doses. The error was not in packaging. The error was made because a nurse did NOT follow correct protocol for giving heparin, especially to an infant. Signed a NURSE.

30. Cedars Sinai is a scary irresponsible hospital with questionable billing practices to boot. Don't assume the doctors are good just because they're on staff at this hospital. There are many bad doctors on staff there.
