"Lost" Diary -- Meet Kevin Johnson

LostHey, it's Daniel from TMZ here, back with the last "Lost" Diary before our Writer's Strike hiatus.

I took off Thursday and Friday from work so I can stay home for four days straight and watch nothing but college basketball. Now that "Lost" is on, I kind of don't know what to do. Who would be the four number one seeds in the "Lost" tournament? I go with Ben, Locke, Jack and Sayid -- I think they best represent what "Lost" is about. I'd have to put Widmore in my Final 4, though somehow he's becoming more and more of a player as things go on.

For all you "Lost" Diary newbies, here's how it goes: I gather with a group of friends watching "Lost," writing what happens on the show as it happens, and throwing in my two cents along the way. I am watching tonight's episode of "Lost" alone as Lauren is MIA and Ari wanted to wait and watch with her. Lauren's commitment to "Lost" is embarrassing these days and frankly I think it's time I take the show on the road once "Lost" comes back from hiatus. Anyone got room on their couch for me? I'll bring the chips! Let's roll ...

9:00 -- Previously on "Lost" is as a season 2 greatest hits package -- since that's the last time we saw Michael.

9:01 -- Locke is hosting a tupperware party of sorts as he brings everyone up-to-speed on what's been going on. Another scene where people tell other people things we already know.

9:02 -- "We kinda, like, knew that forever ago." -- Hurley to Miles when Miles says the freighter is there for Ben.

9:03 -- "My spy on the freighter is Michael." -- Ben. To quote Hurley, "We kinda, like, knew that forever ago."

9:04 -- "I'm here to die." -- Michael to Sayid when Sayid asks him why he is on the boat. Michael, could you be a little more specific?

9:09 -- Ben is giving Alex (who, along with Karl and Rousseau, looks weird in actual clothes) a map to the Temple. Perhaps, finally, we'll see what the rest of the Others have been up to.

9:10 -- Did anyone notice that, like, EVERYONE is listed as being a guest star tonight -- including LIBBY??? I don't even know what to make of this info right now.

9:11 -- We're flashing back now -- hopefully to explain how Michael ended up on the boat. Or maybe we're flashing forward, I don't know.

9:12 -- Did Michael just pin a suicide note to his jacket?

9:13 -- Yes, yes he did.

9:17 -- Didn't work though, as Michael wakes up in a hospital, looking a little worse for wear -- and dreaming of Libby.

9:18 -- The note pinned to Michael's chest was written to Walt. Something obviously happened to him, the question is what.

9:19 -- Apparently, Walt is just fine, living with Michael's mom. Not showing Walt is a clever way to cover up the fact that he he's, like, a foot taller than he should be.

9:21 -- "I want a gun. I want a gun with bullets." -- Michael. He wasn't kidding when he said he wanted to die. If at first you don't succeed by driving into a shipping container at high speed ...

9:22 -- Another ghost of island past -- it's Tom. Is he actually real? Can't be ... right?

9:27 -- Seems real enough. Oh right, this is months ago, so he's not dead yet. Totally forgot about that.

9:28 -- Tom tells Michael that the island won't let him kill himself. Did the island cause the car crash that kept Jack from jumping off the bridge at the end of last season? Hmmm ...

9:29 -- Others get to stay in penthouse hotel suites?

9:30 -- After Michael tries and fails to shoot himself in the head, a conveniently-timed newscast reveals the wreckage of Oceanic Flight 815 has been found. What fantastic timing!

9:31 -- According to Tom, it wasn't Ben that staged the plane crash -- it was Widmore. Either way, the point of the fake plane crash is the same -- to keep people from finding the island.

9:32 -- Tom even has an entire file -- complete with cemetery photos where Widmore got the the 324 bodies. Details, details, details.

9:33 -- Tom is trying to guilt Michael into being Ben's "guy on the boat" -- and he's doing quite a good job of it. We're just past the halfway point of this episode and I have to say, while it's interesting to see how Michael got onto the freighter, it would have been more interesting to see how he got from the island back to NY.

9:38 -- Not only is Kevin Johnson on the boat, but so are Minkowski and Naomi. What are the odds Kevin and Naomi ended up getting together? Thought I picked up on some vibes there from Naomi.

9:40 -- Is Miles ever NOT creepy?

9:41 -- Man, Tom would make a great football coach -- his motivational speeches are awesome.

9:43 -- Lawnmower Man is giving Michael his theory that Oceanic Flight 815 is really out there somewhere. Michael is probably more inclined to believe him than most.

9:44 -- What's in the box? Fax machine? Laptop? Camera?

9:45 -- The conveniently-timed random gunfire gives Michael all the motivation he needs to open the box, where he finds ...

9:46 -- ... a bomb ...

9:47 -- ... and Libby's ghost ...

9:48 -- ... and a note that reads "NOT YET." Watching Michael try and kill himself all these times is like watching "Groundhog Day" with Bill Murray.

9:53 -- Michael has a call from the mainland -- and it's Walt.

9:54 -- But it's actually Ben, trying to explain how he's different from Widmore and how he didn't kill Libby and Ana Luca -- Michael did. Michael already feels bad enough -- does he have to rub it in?

9:55 -- Ben is giving Michael the game plan for taking down the freighter. Sounds easy enough (and apparently it was).

9:56 -- And now we're back to now ("Spaceballs" reference) and Sayid is outraged that Michael is working for Ben. That's like the future pot calling the kettle black, no?

9:57 -- Sayid is selling out Michael to the captain, and I'm imaging the captain will shoot him in the head and grant Michael his wish. This is the act that will begin Sayid's downward spiral that leads him to go work for Ben.

9:58 -- Rousseau, Alex and Karl are making their way to the Temple. Almost forgot about them.

9:59 -- R.I.P. Karl.

10:00 -- R.I.P. Rousseau.

10:01 -- "I'm Ben's daughter!!!" -- Alex

It's important not to think of this episode as a season finale or anything like that -- it was just intended to be the 8th episode out of 16. So I don't want to hold it to the same standard that I would a finale of some kind.

That said, this episode fell a little short for me. As I mentioned before, I feel like we were kind of robbed of half of the "What Happened to Michael?" story. It was interesting to see how far into depression he sunk over killing Ana Lucia and Libby. And they did give him a pretty good reason for working for Ben, when really I never thought they'd have a real good one. But I can't shake the feeling that we missed a good opportunity (but I understand that they pretty much can't show Walt ever again).

All in all, I'd say we got a solid, but not spectacular episode of "Lost." I give it a C+. While there are plenty of things I liked about the episode, if I had said to you going in, "Tonight we find out what happened to Michael since he left the island and how he ended up on the freighter" -- wouldn't you have expected an unbelievable episode? I know I did.

As for the ending, there are two possibilities: 1) Lawnmower Man took the helicopter back to the island with some people and now they have Alex (just like Ben didn't want) or 2) Ben knew that Richard and company would never let Rousseau and Karl in the Temple, and they killed them (in which case Ben sent them out there to be killed -- assuming they're really dead).

Well it looks like we're off for about a month. I absolutely, positively promise I will do a question answer column on Monday over at thelostdiary.com -- I am way too far behind. Click here to send me a question.

Til then ...

91. First I don't think that was Walt in the window at all.It didn't look like him. Remember, the grandmother has not seen Walt as he was with the Mother til she died, and then with Michael on the Island, so she wouldn't know what Walt looked like. She also stated that Walt wouldn't talk to her, and she couldn't even call them by their real names. I think the whole reason Michael went to his mother's was to verify that Walt was not there. Why else woud he be trying to kill himself, if Walt was still alive? With everything that happened on that island while they were there, I would think that Walt would understand him doing whatever it took to get him back. I think the real reason Michael agreed to go on the freighter is because Walt is still on the Island, as I don't believe that Michael would go on the freighter to save anyone else. His whole objective has always been "whatever it takes to get his son back". Also, did anyone notice that when Michael was in the hospital, the monitor next to his bed, in the "dream sequence" with Libby, said Alarm disabled, Admit patient to activate.... I thought that seemed strange. Also , the man in the next bed, first had the canules in his nose for oxygen in that first sequence, and then with the nurse, it was a mask.

92. to the person who was surprised Tom was gay -- that was addressed early on, when the Others kidnapped Kate and Sawyer and had them in cages. She was hesitant to undress in front of him, and he said no worries, your arent my type.

93. Just because Tom told Kate "you aren't my type" a long time ago didn't solidify the fact that he was gay. Heck, I just thought he preferred blondes.

94. Wait, if you can't die on the island, does that mean that all those castaways (like Boone) aren't really dead?

Posted at 3:54PM on Mar 21st 2008 by #7

95. The island will keep alive those that could be used to help protect it, so Roussou might actually die because she is not interested in protecting it (she wanted off and hates Ben). Charlie was not saved from his death bc he actually helped reveal its location. Locke survived bc he likes the island etc .etc. MIcheal is being used by the island.

I'm confused as to why Tom told Mike that he was to kill everyone on board, and after setting the bomb to do so, Ben told him they were not interested in killing innocent ppl? Thoughts anyone...

I don't know why, but when I saw Sayid out Mike to the captain, my first thought was "so that is why Sayid is working for Ben" any thoughts, perhaps it becomes a big mistake for Sayid and Ben exploits his guilt just as he was with Michael. Please discuss!

96. Tom said the island will not let you "kill yourself". He did not say that he could not die by some other means. I think all the other people that have died are really dead because they did not off themselves. They die in some other way.

97. Hello? #42...Sayid "falling" for Ana Lucia? Ana Lucia killed Shannon...who Sayid WAS involved with. Sayid was probably most pissed because Michael did what he wanted to do!

98. what was the name in the obituary? I cannot remember. It mentioned NY, I rememeber.

99. Hi, Thank you for another great entry. My thoughts on this episode were similar in that I wanted more. I did like it, but it wasn't the BEST. Why can't Michael die? The island wont let him....but what about all those that have died on the island?? I don't seem to understand that piece of the pie.

I agree with the whole this is why Sayid will be working for Ben part. Perhaps he does get Michael into trouble- because he can't die...

I'm bummed about the long break, but can't wait, I'm hoping for an AMAZING return. In the meantime I guess I'll re-watch the season in case I've missed something.

Until then...

100. I'm glad that there is a show that I can figure out some things yet still wonder about others. I can't wait to see more and I'm definitely buying the set once it is all over

101. Was Michael's Mom (Walt's grandma) the lady that hired Miles to get rid of her grandson' murdered spirit?

102. Ok so I read this blog every week since the beginning when Daniel first starting writring, but I don't usually post...

However, first off, lately the getting defensive, griping back and forth has been OOC- lost viewers can all disagree, ect and thats cool but it's not fun to read you guys argue between each other like that....

Lost comment---they never said that the island won't let you die, it said the island won't let you KILL YOURSELF- which is a big distinction if you ask me. The writers would be insane if the Island was a place you could "never die"- think of all the women who (according to Ben and Juliet) have died from childbirth-- if you actually couldnt die on the island there would be no issue. I agree that it seems to be that you can't off yourself while the island needs you...

I too would have been more excited to find out how Walt/Michael got back to the NY. I mean, what? Did they just said that pathetic little boat on those coordinates all the way across the ocean? And if they gotten to land, how the heck did they afford a plane ticket and fake names, ect. Kind of unrealistic if you get to thinking about it.

Also, did anyone catch where Locke was explaining to Sawyer while he didn't feel the need to mention the 3.2 million dollars that Miles wanted from Ben...and Locke said "Well theres not exactly a bank of the island, i didnt think it was relevant" and then Miles cracked up laughing. Does that mean we are a whole lot closer to civilaztion than we know? Or is it just that we have a lot easier access than the Losties realize?

Anyway, I love lost no matter what. Recently I started dating someone who had never seen lost and thought I was a nut and compared me to a "Trekkie"- not even sure thats how you spell that. Then I bought him season 1 and now he sees the light. Its fun to rediscover all this again from the beginning...if any of you haven't watched the old seasons since they aired the first time, i highly recommend it, it felt lik ea family reuinion seeing all the old gang again before they ever discovered the hatch, the others and more.....

103. First - like a TV if you don't like whats on change the channel!!! If you don't like this blog DONT READ IT!!!!! Some of us like a side of humor with our LOST!

OK - that said - WOW Daniel you did wimp out not mentioning Tom's sexual orientation!!!

Next to all the PC people out there turn away, I wouldn't want you to be offended - Alright you've had your fair warning! My phone rang 2 secs after Tom's kiss - it was my BFF - He was screaming "That explains why he throw's like a girl!!!!" Oh by the way my BFF A RAGING QUEEN!!! Lighten up people!!!

Also maybe the Island is the Fountain of Youth!!! It obviously has curative powers (Locke and Rose) but then what about Ben's tumor and ladies with babies.AAAGGGHHHH!!!!!!

I only have one thing I really need from the writers - PLEASE for the love of all that is holy KEEP CHARLIE REALLY REALLY DEAD!!!

104. Tom didn't tell Michael he can't die, they said you can't kill yourself....that's a big difference.

105. I am going to have to rewatch the episode but I don't think the kid at Michaels Moms house is Walt. She said to Michael: He thought you died and then you turn up alive and now I can't tell anyone about you or Walt (or something like that). Michael never said Can I see Walt. He just said, I want to see my son. I remember watching that scene and saying Michael has another kid?, yet another storyline. Someone might have already mentioned this but I haven't gotten through all the comments.
