Heath Ledger: Broker Than a Joker?

Could it be that one of the hottest actors in Hollywood barely had a pot to piss in when he died? If reports out of Australian papers are to be believed, Heath Ledger was only worth $145,000 at the time of his death.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the total value of Heath's estate is "$145,000, with furniture and fixtures worth $20,000, a Toyota Prius worth $25,000 and $100,000 in miscellaneous bank accounts." It also names Heath's father, mother and sisters as the only beneficiaries, but acknowledges his two-year-old daughter Matilda Rose as an interested party.

What this doesn't jibe with is family sources are telling TMZ that Matilda will be "well taken care of." So, where's the money?

Stay tuned ...

33. Wake up TMZ. Isn't this kinda old news. The will was written in 2003 before Matilda was born.

34. With no wife, based on the New York statutes on intestate succession (who your stuff goes to when you die without a will), his daughter is automatically a beneficiary. Don't know, though, how his being a sort of international resident, living all over the place, effects this. Perhaps he'd lived in NY long enough, consistently, for the NY laws to apply. Too bad he wasnt married to Michelle as she and the daughter would have inherited all in NY.

35. OK TMZ, it was reported WEEKS ago that those amounts reported were what his estate was worth when he had that will drawn up over 3 yrs ago! His will was not updated since then so whatever that will shows is not necessarily accurate to what his estate is currently worth. Little slow on the uptake there arent we! Anyways, Heath is dead- let him rest in peace. You seem to have no respect whatsoever for people need for privacy- especially when this family needs it the most.

36. number 36 if your daughter is under age then who ever is in control of her gets power of attorney and all that crap , and also is in control of her estate , that would really screw his father and mother. im sure thats what heath parents are affraid of , if heath had another other kids that nobody knew about because he didnt care for any bad p.r for screwing around , then they are just out of luck and thats not unusual with wealthy people an hollywood.

38. First off, who cares how much money the guy had? It was HIS money, to do with as he pleased. Obviously he wasn't anticipating dying of an overdose in his youth.

Secondly, Reuters reported these same figures, but referred to it as his "New York assets," not his "total" assets, and since TMZ has a long history of mis-reporting, I'm going with the Reuters report.

39. you people keep saying the will was written before his daughter was born , but still didnt Michelle have her own money , maybe heath wanted to help his parents because he knew his daughter was going to be ok anyway . you people are ruthless arseholes trying to give what he had to that old hag. his daughter wasnt the only family he had. and like i said her mother im sure is just as well off as heath was.

40. "Broker Than a Joker?" Is that a reference to an old Steve Miller Band song?

Posted at 2:38PM on Mar 23rd 2008 by Marshmallow

41. Impossible. Heath was paid $2 million for Batman. Where is it? Sounds like his parents don't want Michelle to get any of it.

42. I'm sure you are aware that his will was drafted in 2003. You ask where the money is, well let's see he made a hell of a lot of money after 2003, plus you are not considering what has already been reported as Heath having Australian properties, trusts, and other financial investments.

I enjoy your site, but find your question really degrading towards Heath, his family, and his loved ones considering the fact that you probably already know all of these things. That and your header is just plain disgusting.

44. How about we stop basking in a deadman's limelight and let it go? God forbid we do something like...I dunno....show some damn respect for the man. As you may realize he can't vouch for himself with being dead and all....

45. Those were his assets back in 2003 before Brokeback Mountain and before he met Michelle or had his daughter. I also think his uncles should keep their noses out of Heath's financial affairs, it is none of their business.I am sure Heath's family will make sure Matilda is well taken care of and don't forget Michelle makes her own money.
