Tejano Star Emilio Navaira Critical After Crash

Grammy-winning Tejano singer Emilio Navaira was critically injured after his band's bus crashed in Houston.

Navaira and his band Rio had performed at a Houston nightclub on Saturday night. Cops say around 5:00 AM Sunday the band's bus slammed into traffic barrels on Interstate 610 northbound in Bellaire, a posh area west of downtown Houston.

Navaira is currently in critical condition at Memorial Hermann Hospital. His brother Raul was also injured in the wreck, along with several other members of the band.

The 45-year-old Navaira and Rio have released more than a dozen albums. "Acuerdate" won the 2003 Grammy for best Tejano album.

166. I think it's sad that people have to lead their lives with ignorant thoughts like "mexicans are what makes this world a bad place"... whether emilio was mexican or not, he's still a human being. He still has feelings and a family just like the rest of us. I mean honestly... could you imagine if that was your mom or dad??? I honestly couldn't be heartless and say "well i'm glad he/she was in an accident cause white people are what makes this world a bad place"... so lets set aside the difference in race... HE'S STILL HUMAN. So i think that the people that are leaving stupid comments should keep that in mind. And give him the respect he deserves. He didn't make his living crossing the border (he was born in san antonio) he didn't make his living selling drugs... he made it by doing what he does best and thats singing. and just because he happens to be hispanic and little bit weathier than you 'WTF' does't mean he's a bad person. And another thing... i think it's hillarious how some ignorant people can say the worst things about mexicans & hispanics but yet... they're quick to eat our food. Taco...Enchiladas...Burritos anyone?

171. I saw the accident when I was on my way to spend Easter with my family. At that time I had no idea it was Emilio. I just saw a bus and figured it was just some random person who lost control while they were driving. It wasn't until the next say that I found out it was Emilio in that bus. My prayers go out to him and his family. Such a talented man.

173. Emilio you are in our prayers. He has preformed fantastic shows and makes a living off what most people only dream of doing. I recently saw him at a tribute for Freddy Fender and thought he was fantastic and his message was so heartfelt. My prayers go to his family as well for i know what it is to exprience such tragedy and can only send support that there are others around wishing him all the best.

For those who are so ignorant to make such a statement as the one below let me just say that you have no place in this world at all. These hispanics, such as myself, you are so quick to degrade are probably more involved in your everday life than you think. May god aid you in your stupidity and remind you that the world we live in now works together when people such as yourself are excluded and only contains chaos and hate because of people like you. You could not possibly contribute anything to society that could possibly make you better than anyone else.

174. Emilio....Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your Family. May God bless you and we wish you a full recovery. Oh, and to all the "ignorant racist remarks" remember.....WE DIDN'T CROSS THE BORDERS...THE BORDERS CROSSED US. It is nice to know that we (HISPANICS) have a beautiful culture and we know how to embrace it.

HOUSTON -- Emilio Navaria opened his eyes and moved his arms and legs Wednesday night, but the Tejano singer remainds in critical condition, according to Memorial Hermann Hospital.

Doctors said the injuries he suffered in his Sunday tour bus crash are in the area of the brain that controls speech. Until the singer comes out of the coma, they will not know how much damage may have been done.

The Grammy-winning singer was thrown through the windshield of the tour bus he was driving after crashing on the West Loop early Sunday morning.

180. I am saddened to hear about the critical condition of Emilio Navaira. I have enjoyed his songs, "It's Not The End of the World" and "Have I Told You Lately". The doctor has said he may not make it. Emilio will need our prayers and a miracle.
