Tejano Star Emilio Navaira Critical After Crash

Grammy-winning Tejano singer Emilio Navaira was critically injured after his band's bus crashed in Houston.

Navaira and his band Rio had performed at a Houston nightclub on Saturday night. Cops say around 5:00 AM Sunday the band's bus slammed into traffic barrels on Interstate 610 northbound in Bellaire, a posh area west of downtown Houston.

Navaira is currently in critical condition at Memorial Hermann Hospital. His brother Raul was also injured in the wreck, along with several other members of the band.

The 45-year-old Navaira and Rio have released more than a dozen albums. "Acuerdate" won the 2003 Grammy for best Tejano album.

HOUSTON -- Emilio Navaria opened his eyes and moved his arms and legs Wednesday night, but the Tejano singer remainds in critical condition, according to Memorial Hermann Hospital.

Doctors said the injuries he suffered in his Sunday tour bus crash are in the area of the brain that controls speech. Until the singer comes out of the coma, they will not know how much damage may have been done.

The Grammy-winning singer was thrown through the windshield of the tour bus he was driving after crashing on the West Loop early Sunday morning.

167. I am saddened to hear about the critical condition of Emilio Navaira. I have enjoyed his songs, "It's Not The End of the World" and "Have I Told You Lately". The doctor has said he may not make it. Emilio will need our prayers and a miracle.

172. Tejano music is equivalent to country music in Nashville. Alot of artist give concerts where the fans can get up close with the musicians. Usually they write their own music and arrangements. It is grassroots for hispanics. Fans feel they know the artists personally because most of the artist take time to be with their fans. Emilio is the George Strait of tejano. An oldie but a goodie that is so revered in all of Tejano music. People come out to see him and perform. He came to Brownsville,Tx for Charro Days in February and he was the headliner. He said at the end of the concert he wanted to come back next year,I hope he can come back at some time.

175. I would like to send my prayers and to tell his family to keep positive thoughts no matter how bad it looks like right now! I can relate how the family feels, because just 1 year ago my youngest brother had a similar accident and he suffered head injuries. All the Doc. told us that they couldn't say if he would ever come out of it alright. All of my Sister's & Brother were by his bedside 24/7 we took shifts sitting by his side waiting for some kind of movment. We prayed together and when we were alone and God answered our prayers! The Doc's were so shocked to see his change with in a few wks! The Doc's couldn't explain how fast he came around. So PLEASE don't giveup hope, because miracle's do happen and God is on your side! My Brother had a hard road ahead of him and he fought just as hard as we did for him! He now is driving again and living a full recovered life!
KEEP THE FAITH IN YOU HEARTS & KEEP UP YOUR STRENGTH FOR HIM! HE NEEDS ALL OF YA'LL STRONG
I'M A PROUD TEJANA ORIGINALLY FROM VICTORIA,TEXAS MUCH LOVE TO YOU EMILO! KEEP FIGHTING!!

176. This is a tough time for the family. I must say that the commenters seem genuinely concerned. Usually, you read through comment posts and find that people are harsh and insensitive. (Like when Anna Nicole Smith died.......though I'm sure they'll show up soon)

Regardless of how one comments, the family is going through a experience that can happen to anyone at any moment. As long as you're alive...........death is a possibility.

We pray for a miracle..............God Bless.
