Tejano Star Emilio Navaira Critical After Crash

Grammy-winning Tejano singer Emilio Navaira was critically injured after his band's bus crashed in Houston.

Navaira and his band Rio had performed at a Houston nightclub on Saturday night. Cops say around 5:00 AM Sunday the band's bus slammed into traffic barrels on Interstate 610 northbound in Bellaire, a posh area west of downtown Houston.

Navaira is currently in critical condition at Memorial Hermann Hospital. His brother Raul was also injured in the wreck, along with several other members of the band.

The 45-year-old Navaira and Rio have released more than a dozen albums. "Acuerdate" won the 2003 Grammy for best Tejano album.

20. Emilio and his brother have been doing latin music since they were in high school. He was a good friend of Selena,
who died tragically in the '90s. In the days when Tejano music was really popular, he was kind of the Tejano prince and she was the Tejano princess...both very talented.
Pray for him and his family and members of the band as they go through this trying time.

21. Strange how whenever there's a story about blacks or jews everybody goes off on a hateful tirade, but when a hispanic (the people TRULY screwing up this country) dies you all have hearts all of a sudden. You people make no sense. I'm glad this idiot won't be making more music for beer drinking, wife beating hispanics to blast while DRIVING THROUGH my neighborhood. RIH

26. Hey, I'm white and I know who Emilio is! That intersection is a BITCH and I've seen many near misses and wrecks there. It's a quick and often blind merge. I hope the staff at Hermann treat him well (as well as his colleages at the Tub).

28. I am so sad and shocked to hear the news. I have been a fan of Emilio starting from WAY back in the day (late 80's) when he was still with David Lee Garza y Los Musicales. Actually, David Lee was also playing in Houston Saturday night, so I wonder if they are there now at the hospital. Emilio always put on the best shows! Fantastic voice, energy, and charm. They still play his music old & new on the radio here all the time. I just saw Emilio back at Thanksgiving when DLG played and Emilio came by and jumped up on the stage for about a 20 minute quick set. It was like the old times. He rocked. How sad to happen on Easter.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

29. Bellaire is not posh - it is a very large "neighborhood" (actually it is its own city not part of Houston) with houses from over a million in value on down to 150K. It is, however, close to the freeways and downtown. "Posh" would imply it was full of millionaires, but it isn't. I'm not sure what that had to do with a bus accident!

30. Great to see that TMZ is keeping an eye for us Tejano fans...our prayers are with the family.
