Ex-Yank Leyritz Sued for Wrongful Death

Former Yankee Jim Leyritz has been hit with a wrongful death lawsuit. He already faces DUI and manslaughter charges after he allegedly caused the death of a Florida woman in a December car crash.
Rea the lawsuit
The suit, filed in Broward County, seeks at least $15,000 in damages for the family of Fredia Ann Veitch, whom Leyritz plowed into when he ran a red light in his SUV back in December. Cops say that Leyritz's blood alcohol was above the limit at the time of the accident.

Leyritz's lawyer has said that the ex-Yankee will be "both criminally and civilly exonerated." His criminal trial begins May 15.

19. Good. He deserves to be punished for this, to the fullest extent possible. They really should be suing for a helluva lot more then that, but at least they are standing up against a celebrity who made the biggest mistake. Taking someone's life because they thought they could drive drunk. This is proof you can't. Jerk needs to be punished for this.

20. You play, you may pay. Would fifteen thou. even cover the funeral? I have my doubts about that figure. It wouldn't even address loss of life or future earnings from a wrongful death, let alone if the victim had kids, husband, parents, etc.

22. My former husband played with Jimmy 1991-1993 on the New York Yankees team. It is sad to see what has happened to some of the people I new back then. First, Kim Mattingly and now Jimmy Leyritz.

23. A comment on this thread calls Leyritz a "thug." That's so over the line it should cause any reasonable person to question what's really going in the critic's mind. A thug? Leyritz worked his butt off for years to make it to the Major Leagues. He finally, since he's not a deep natural talent, secured a spot by the skin of his teeth. Eventually he hit a crucial home run that led to a World Series win by the Yankees. Now long retired, he has four great pre-teen boys that he loves dearly who accompany him to dozens of games every year at Dolphin Stadium. Is that the picture of a "thug?" Why would anyone use such vicious language? Jim Leyritz is a hard working Dad, who gets up and goes to work every day, and not a privileged wealthy athlete. He was not paid astronomical sums in his playing years. This tragic accident has devastated the Leyritz family. They are not taking it lightly, and their suffering, along with the suffering of the family of the young lady who lost her life, is real.
