Oprah Buys Gayle a Maxi Pad?

Gayle King really could be movin' on up to the east side, to a deluxe apartment in the sky ... and it just might be courtesy of gal pal Oprah Winfrey. We just got -- pardon us -- the skinny.

TMZ has done some diggin' and found Oprah's LLC -- called Sophie's Penthouse -- purchased the $7.1 million phat Manhattan penthouse two weeks ago. BTW, Sophie was the name of Oprah's dog, which just died. And Sofia was her character in "The Color Purple." Good detective work, we think.

There are reports Gayle is moving in. A well-placed source connected to the property tells us it's "uncertain" at this time if Gayle will live large in O's pad. Gayle has said she wants to spend more time in NYC to work with O's magazine and her XM radio show.

O had no comment. Gayle's peeps tell TMZ they don't comment on her private life. They leave that to us!

48. Umm..not sure what the big deal is...isn't that Oprah's money to do with as she chooses?? How can people have negative comments about that??? I'm not an Oprah fan but I really could care less if she spends her $$ on a home for a friend or buying cars for hundreds of people. Doesn't effect society in a negative way so who cares??

51. Gayle King is such a hanger on--if it was not for Oprah she would be no where!! And is so so irritating to hear her imitating Oprah--she tries to talk like her --it's disgusting. While friendship of a long length is to be commended, Oprah has really bent over backwards with opportunities for this no talent person. While she may be a very nice person ( I don't know) she certainly has no talent. Her talk show was painful to watch and her radio program is no better. She is lucky Lady O lets her claim to be editor of :"O" . Let's face it--if Oprah were to drop off the face of the earth, Gayle King would not be on anyone's rolodex--or top of anyone's hiring list. Why doesn't she try to be hersefl instead of trying to imitate Oprah--she must listen to Oprah on tape so she can imitate her voice.

55. Nothing wrong with buying your best friend a gift like that if you have that kind of money. I'd do it.

57. Oprah has to keep Gayle in her good graces because she has too much on Oprah. Oprah has confided lots of stuff to Gayle and she can't risk upsetting her "girlfriend." I've heard those lesbos have some pretty bad tempers and arguments so go figure.

60. I think it's great of Oprah to buy her friend that apartment. If I was that rich I would buy my friends any thing they wanted. I don't know what the big deal is
