Cornell to Cook: "Billie Jean" Is Not Yours, Son!

Chris Cornell wants everyone to know that he really liked David Cook's rendition of "Billie Jean" on "Idol" last week -- because he did it first!

In an interview on Billboard.com, Cornell admits Cook "sang it great," but adds, "it was literally a note-for-note take on what I came up with." Step off, wannabe!

While Ryan Seacrest did give Cornell credit for the innovative cover on the show, Cook's imitation has Chris singing all the way to the bank -- Cornell's "Billie Jean" has jumped to #12 on iTunes. Sing copycats, sing!

16. AND--------EVEN IF RYAN DIDN'T ANNOUNCE CHRIS CORNELL DID IT ALREADY, IT'S DIDN'T MEAN DAVID COOK THOUGHT IT UP, HE JUST SANG IT, HE NEVER CLAIMED TO HAVE REDONE IT HIMSELF. I THINK IT WAS DAVID COOK'S WAY OF GIVING PROPS TO CHRIS CORNELL AND CORNELL'S WAY OF BEING A DUFUS!!! JEALOUSY IS AN UGLY THING......

17. Anyone who thinks David Cook can sing better than Chris Cornell is a peckerwood. GET REAL PEOPLE!

18. It's American Idol. The whole show is singing other people's music. He does a great job covering the songs because he is an amazing performer who is going to go way beyond Idol. Chris Cornell is a legend and this is great to hear some buzz about him. He should just do it in a manner that is less self absorbed.

20. Everyone has given props to Cornell, now he needs to go back to what he was doing and stop crying like a little baby. And he should also shut up fast because we all have ears and everyone knows David Cook KICKED major ass on that song, Cornells version sounded like an old man singing, not the soulful, passionate way Cook did it.

Posted at 12:14PM on Apr 1st 2008 by Cornell Wishes He Sang as good As David Cook

21. Chris Cornell who?
Irregardless of who's version it was, David Cook did an awesome job and dersves positive recognition , not jealous finger pointing,,,GROW UP!

22. The show made it very clear that this version of the song was originally done by Chris Cornell.

Additionally, Cook's version was NOT a note-for-note take on Cornell's version. It you listen to both you will see that Cook put his own spin on it - Cook's version is much more powerful than Cornell's.

23. How about asking David Cook to come up with his own version of something???? Let's see if he can without copying anyone!

Posted at 12:02PM on Apr 1st 2008 by Who cares????

24. "No one knew who you were until David sang this version of the song. Guess everyone needs their 15 minutes....."

No one knew? Maybe if you were living under a rock in Uzbekistan for the last two decades. I should apologize though I shouldn’t expect fans of that industrial unit that is American Idol to know what a real musician or real music is.
Sometimes I just can't help but still be amazed by the total ignorance and stupidity of the American TV watching public. Sheesh.

25. Never heard of Cornell. Wish TMZ and others would leave D. Cook alone. Hugely talented so who cares *what* arrangement he uses as long as he does it well...and he does.

26. It's funny Chris Cornell mentions the idol kid stole it note for note because Chris, himself, stole it note for note from Neil Finn from Crowded House.

27. "Sing copycats, sing" I guess Chris is likin it. He's making loads more money thanks to Cook. His rendition skyrocketed to #12 on I-Tunes after Cook sang it. UH, I think David's version is ranked much higher like maybe in the top 5. We'll really never know b/c they hide the AI rankings. I'm pretty sure a lot of those that bought Chris's version did just that to compare to Cook's. I like Chris, really I do. But I'm liking Cook much more. Let's have this conversation again after Cook wins AI and releases his first major label album and then see who's who. Cook will surpass Daughtry IMO. As Simon would say, "It's just an opinon". Oh, and I give props to Chris for a great arrangement of an old MJ song. I give Cook props for making it rock even more.

28. Okay first of all we already knew cornell made that version but really who cares every song that is performed belongs to someone else. and really people should give Michael Jackson his props that is his song and all these people did was sing and slower and rocky like. BUT I LOVED IT I HOPE THIS GUY WINS AI. LOVE HIM AND AUSTRILLA GUY

29. Oh, boo freaking hoo! David Cook performed the song/version WAY better than ChrisCornell ever could.
Cornell is going over board with this BS. He needs to get over it. Ya don't hear Michael Jackson crying about it -- and it's HIS SONG!

Again -- Chris WHO?

Temple of the Dog? Ever heard the song "Hunger Strike" with Eddie Vedder? (Temple of the Dog is a good CD BTW) Anyways Tink GET A GRIP!! EVERYONE knows who Chris Cornell is... Maybe you should educate yourself before you post.. David Cook is some wannabe singer who after he gets booted off Idol will fade into obscurity. Chris Cornell will hopefully be around a few more years still making great music
