Cornell to Cook: "Billie Jean" Is Not Yours, Son!

Chris Cornell wants everyone to know that he really liked David Cook's rendition of "Billie Jean" on "Idol" last week -- because he did it first!

In an interview on Billboard.com, Cornell admits Cook "sang it great," but adds, "it was literally a note-for-note take on what I came up with." Step off, wannabe!

While Ryan Seacrest did give Cornell credit for the innovative cover on the show, Cook's imitation has Chris singing all the way to the bank -- Cornell's "Billie Jean" has jumped to #12 on iTunes. Sing copycats, sing!

31. Geez Chris get over it SON...... now the entire world knows your version of the song not just your fans... stop being a cry baby and except the credit you were given.... David did your version justice... you should be HONORED to have your version sang on the show by someone with as much talent as David...... you should be happy that people are actually still talking about you.. HASBEEN!

32. EVERYONE on the show sings someone else's song, and no, they DON'T always come up with their own "version" of the song, so why is everyone picking on David? I think the only reason why so many people (including TMZ) are making such a big freaking deal about David Cook supposedly "stealing" or "copying" Cornell's song is because it's the only bad thing they can think of to say about him!

Cornell WAS CREDITED for his work. If that's not good enough for Cornell or for some of the nutjobs on here, that's not David's problem. What more do you want him to do--kiss Cornell's ass every second of the performance? It just goes to show that you'll never be able to please everyone no matter what you do. It also isn't his fault that the JUDGES are the ones who are saying that he's "original". David never claimed to be original and he NEVER claimed the song as his own. If you have a problem with the judges claiming that David is original, then tell THEM that they need to know their stuff better than they do and they need to pay more attention when Ryan is making the announcements.

Jealousy is a VERY ugly thing.

33. Message to everyone dumping on Chris Connell, READ THE BILLBOARD.COM ARTICLE! When you read it, you'll see that TMZ has taken it out of context. He's not saying these remarks as an egotistical a**hole. Once again the MEDIA strikes to make someone look bad.

35. This David Cook cannot be let off because HE should be the one to mention who's song- or version of, he is singing in the interview spot before the performance. He passes it all off like he came up with the renditions. He will be eliminated.

36. DAVID COOK IS TOO ARROGANT TO BECOME THE NEXT AI.

AT LEAST A FEW OTHER AI CONTESTANTS COME OUT WITH THEIR GUITAR AND PIANO , SHOWING TALENT.

THIS DOUCHE WILL BE FAMOUS FOR SURFING THE NET AND COPYING OTHER ARTISTS AND THEIR RENDITION OF A SONG.

37. It was not announced until the elimination show that it was Chris Cornell's. And the reason it was announced is bacause they were trying to save face because everyone knew he rippsed off the song.

38. In regards to the comments of those who don't know who Chris Cornell is, you are very young. For those that lived through the grung years and into this decade of ever changing tasts, it is nice to see a throw back to Chris Cornell. David Cook is a great singer. It is nice that he paid tribute to Chris Cornell's work and now all of you young kids commenting who never heard of him know who he is. Download his stuff, he is a legend.

39. Chris Cornell should be grateful anybody is listening to his music. He is a great singer, but after the way he dumped on Audioslave after they took his junkie *ss in and kept his career going and supported him. I lost alot of respect for him because of that.
BTW - David Cook himself said it was Cornell's version in his interview BEFORE his performance, So ENOUGH already.......

40. I never heard of Chris Cornell until Seacreast announced it on the show before David Cooks performance. Cornell should be thanking David Cook for giving him all of this exposure.

41. David Cook is okay, but this just shows that he is no more original than any other contestants (and probably less so). He covered "Billie Jean" exactly. I didn't know this when I saw the performance, which I loved at first. But when I found out that it was a copy of Cornell's arrangement, I was much less impressed. What was cool about it was that it was so unique. I think that was what impressed most people - that it was so different from MJ's "Billie Jean." His vocals are okay, but certainly nothing great. HIs "originality" was what made him cool for a couple weeks. But now I guess I will have to figure out a new favorite since I now know that the last 4 weeks have all been covers of covers.

42. I knew it was Chris Cornell's version as soon as David started it. It doesn't matter if Ryan mentioned it was Chris Cornell's version. What matters is that David Cook did not acknowledge it that night after the judges called him "original". He just stood there and took all the credit for being "original". Same thing with Blake Lewis when he sang Love Song (the 311 version), was called "original" and didn't acknowledge it.

I didn't care for Chris Cornell's cover of Billie Jean when I heard it on the CD, but when I saw him perform it live, it was amazing. Way more than David Cook could ever do. Chris Cornell is an amazing musician, songwriter and singer. Remember it!!!

43. David Cook is a tool.

Although, with that, he will probably now copy a Tool song. That should be criminal.

44. It was announced BEFORE his original performance. Ryan Seacrest said "Singing Chris Cornells version of Billy Jean".....And what does it matter? Every song on that show is a cover song! There is no originals, and others have sang songs exactly as the originals as well and they aren't getting smacked down! And to the person who said at least others have come out with their piano and guitar....David Cook has come out two or three times with his guitar as well....
This whole thing is stupid-Every song is a cover and will continue to be unless the producers allow the contestants the choice to come out with an original composition.
