Cornell to Cook: "Billie Jean" Is Not Yours, Son!

Chris Cornell wants everyone to know that he really liked David Cook's rendition of "Billie Jean" on "Idol" last week -- because he did it first!

In an interview on Billboard.com, Cornell admits Cook "sang it great," but adds, "it was literally a note-for-note take on what I came up with." Step off, wannabe!

While Ryan Seacrest did give Cornell credit for the innovative cover on the show, Cook's imitation has Chris singing all the way to the bank -- Cornell's "Billie Jean" has jumped to #12 on iTunes. Sing copycats, sing!

46. And if you've never heard of Chris Cornell, please don't admit it. Just because you've apparently been under a rock, kept in one of Saddam's dungeons, or you're a captive Katie Holmes, why admit it over and over?

Did google break or something?

47. There was no mention of the fact that Michael Jackson composed the classic song, Billie Jean. The arrangement was great as was Cook's performance, but Michael Jackson should have atleast been mentioned on American Idol. It could not have been an oversight, it had to be intentional. I dont think it was right not acknowledge him.

David Cook was far better than Chris Cornell if anything David should be mad because Chris said he sang it note for note...Chris might have desired to hit the same notes as David but he missed most of them.....David song this song far BETTER than this never have been.....and will have a much bettr career!

49. a "David Cook" could be found in any bar in America. He has the same voice and talent as some guy singing in a cover band in a pub in Wichita. There are numerous bands with music out now that have a frontman with a similar voice. They like David would have the same fame right now if it was them on American Idol. problem with David Cook is he is gaining all this fame by doing versions of songs that other artists have spent hours remastering. The main issue is the ignorance of the American public who assume that he came up with the new arrangements. If you listen to his version and the cover he covered...its basically the same and no better. However David Cook has a platform that 30 million people watch every week that have never or would never have come across these versions. ..and so they assume they are his. Most people are finding out now that he was doing covers of covers. But at this point all those ignorant people have David Cook glorified in there mind. I think this week will show if David Cook is really any good. There is only one cover done by a rock band of a Dolly Parton song. That being Jolene by the White Stripes. If he picks that song it will be extremely predictable..and will probably just be ok.......everything else is wild card. He would have to put his own spin on something to rock it out...which I believe he is incapable of doing. I predict diaster for him tonight. And for all you David Cook fans....did you know he already has his own cd out? ..yeah i didnt think so.

50. You guys do realize that *IF* David Cook did a rotten job performing the song -- nobody would be even having this conversation. Fact is, David Cook did an awesome job and Chris Cornell is acting like a jealous winey bitch.

51. The dude should be grateful that someone brought his dead ass song back to life, instead he's talking like it's the next Macarena or something!!

52. Whining about a cover of a cover. Remakes and covers....can't anyone write something original that doesn't suck anymore?

For someone with so much time in the music business Chris is certainly reacting with little grace and professionalism. Cook is a wet behind the ears kid, who has no control over Idol. He DID give credit, what more can he do? Never denied it, so why is he taking heat?

The whole thing is just stupid. If Cornell is really such a legend, why can't he just be grateful to get the free publicity? No artist no matter how known should be against reaching a new audience.

53. When David Cook started singing that song last week I didn't even recognize it at first. I have active kids so I've been out of the music scene for quite a while. That being said I pretty much only have time to stay current with popular artists -- not necessarily "pop" music. And, while I am not always on the "in" as far as music goes...I have to tell you that I think David Cook is going to take America by storm. It doesn't matter what he is singing because when he sings he gives the music a rough edge that reminds all of us all of our passion for music. And, I love that he is a self-proclaimed word nerd. He is smart and he is very talented. His vocal control and range is excellent. I do understand that he is covering other people's music (that they are covering as well), but he is in a spotlight and he has the attention right now that will draw large audiences to the music he is singing. I have been an AI fan only intermittently, but Cook is the first person who I have ever thought I might actually "follow". In fairness to Daughtry...I didn't watch that season, but I do like some of his songs. Chris Cornell is right to acknowledge that David Cook did an excellent job on this song. I'm sure he has made a lot more money off it now than he had previously. Cornell must be very talented to have taken this song and changed it the way he did. Kudos to both David Cook and Chris Cornell.

54. also have you listened to the studio versions recorded by the American Idols....David Cooks are the worst.....probably why the cd he released sold like 10 copies...he does not record well

55. Calm down everyone. I believe David Cook as well as Ryan Seacrest gave Cornell credit before and after the song was sung. If the judges did not hear him that is not Davids fault. I think he is awesome and as someone pointed out in an earlier post, every song sung on Idol is a cover of someone elses version. Cornell get over yourself. David Cook is a contestant in a reality show. He is not making millions off of your cover of someone elses song.

59. The issue is the judges were drooling all over this TOOL - David KOOK for being so brave and cutting edge. David KOOK knew it would work because Cornell had already done it note for note this way this = not so brave and cutting edge! All KOOK had to do is say "Hopefully I did it as good as Chris Cornell" but instead when the judges were praising him for being so creative and brave he was taking the credit like he came up with THIS version and made it is own. (VERY DIFFERENT FROM M.J.’S)

For anyone that knows music, knows that KOOK could not hold Chris Cornells jock strap in the real world, he has about half the range of Cornell at best. This is why this has become a big deal with Cornell and his fans. Saying Cornell is trying to get his 15 min of fame off KOOK really shows how ignorant the A.I. masses are! Cornell is in the Robert Plant category KOOK is in the Chris Daughtry, which isn’t terrible, just not legendary.
