17. Hey, mean people, lay off Queen.

I usually see her when I get my brows done at Anastasia across the street. I'm no expert, but I think she has schizophrenia. She rocks back and forth, repeats herself. and occasionally doesn't make sense...what's called "word salad." She's incredibly devout, and says that that God protects her.

The last time I saw her, I gave her a few dollars and asked her if she needed anything. What did she ask for? More money? Cigarettes? Booze? No, she asked for a clean shirt because she said she was going to court in a few days.

When she slows down enough to engage in conversation, she has alluded to being sexually and physically abused over a period of time. It seemed that there had been a recent incident of abuse w/ a boyfriend and that's why she left where she was living.

Her teeth are perfect, her clothes are always in good condition, and she always appears (and smells) clean. I did wonder about her good hygiene. It was a red flag. Maybe she was a scam artist. But after repeated conversations, IMHO, Queen is definitely homeless and suffers from mental illness. With respect to her good hygiene. I've seen her exit what looks like a closet in the parking structure. It may be a bathroom.

I used to work in Venice. There's a lot of homeless folks there, too. One trend I can attest to: most homeless people don't want to get off the street. Believe me, I tried to hook two street people up w/ local facilities like Ocean Park Church and Back on Broadway. One man had been 3 paychecks away from the street. He lost his job, and it was downhill from there. He was too proud to call his family back in Boston. Drugs were also a factor. He was obviously educated. I don't know why some people "prefer" chronic homelessness. Perhaps others on the TMZ board can explain.

Pebbles, having been homeless as a teenager I can tell you I prefered finding my own safe places rather than the very unsafe shelters where one is locked in with mentally ill folks who should be in institutions but, because most people don't care about the mentally ill, are left to rot on the streets. In addition to the psych folks, the shelters were also full of drug addicts who were violent and would steal everything including your shoe laces the moment you went to sleep.

Ever tried, as a parent, to care for an adult child who is schizophrenic, so hears voices of demons telling him to kill you? Ever try to get a job for someone who has auditory hallucinations and butters every page of his SSI and section 8 housing application paperwork? Ever try to house in the community someone who believes satan is coming out of the electrical outlets? Thanks, Ronnie. Leaving caring for the profoundly mentally disturbed up to the families really worked well. Now we abandon them to the streets, and jail them. Thank you, Ronnie, for a kinder, gentler nation.
