Matchbox 20 Won't Play Because of Some Bulls***

Matchbox 20 is canceling a show at Cheyenne Frontier Days -- which bills itself as the world's biggest outdoor rodeo -- over their newfound concern for the animals involved. Did they not know what a rodeo was?

Lead singer Rob Thomas and his wife, Marisol, posted this statement on the band's website: "We ask that (fans) please understand that it would be impossible for us to put ourselves in the position of making money from what we believe to be the mistreatment of animals."

But get this: the band is still scheduled to perform at the North Dakota State Fair -- which also includes rodeo events. They'll figure it out eventually.

91. Good for Matchbox Twenty. Let's think about some of the questions asked in this blog.....

Do they eat meat, probably so.
Do they wear leather (shoes, watches etc), yep.

BUT..... DO THEY BEAT ANIMALS AND TORTURE THEM OR DRAG THEM AROUND ON THE GROUND BY A HORSE? NO!!!!!

Maybe you guys should check out some of the video footage of last years rodeo, and see for yourself. I couldn't watch much more than 1 min so good luck to you. I hope you get though it all. If it doesn't bother you, then you have no heart!

93. Maybe this band has only heard one side of this issue. If they read these comments, I would like them to know that the bulls are absolutly treated as well or better than the ranchers treat themselves and their kids. Farmers and ranchers don't eat until their bulls are fed. Bulls are regularly examined by the vet to prevent illness and injury. These animals are their livelihood, they MUST care well for them or they lose income. The flank strap only encourages a bred to buck bull to buck. It does not hurt it in any way. Some of the more expensive bulls are only bucked in certain locations so they are not too long on the road. Please investigate the other side of the issue before you condemn these rancher and farmers. Also you might want to seriously investigate Peta and the Humane Society. They are not what they claim to be at all.

94. Good for MB20! Rodeos are outdated and merely animal abuse. Calf roping is for cowards. Rodeos need to go the way of that other tradition--slavery. The CFD is one of the most abusive rodeos. Rodeos are for the easily amused sadists who enjoy them.

Links from CCF posted on here are not exactly the best source to defend animal abuse. CCF is a public relations firm for the tobacco, alcohol, and food industry. They are against banning smoking in restaurants and other public places, as well as against Mothers Against Drunk Driving, because they are a front for the tobacco and alcohol industries. They got their start by their founder, Rick Berman, a public relations expert, requesting a grant from Phillip Morris tobacco company who gave him something like $600,000. Their interest is not for consumers, as they claim, it's for the tobacco, alcohol, and food industries they front.

But don't just take my word for it, here's info on the history of Center for Consumer Freedom and what they do (such as abusing their tax exempt status):

May the CFD die out as soon as possible. If so many cowboys (who voluntarily get involved) were really hurt, as some claim, it would end. Meanwhile, the animals continue to suffer.

95. To those who do not think rodeos are cruel to animals, let me shock you with 1500 volts to your face and see how you feel.

96. Rodeos are for ignorant, primitive and losers! Doing these barbaric things with the poor animals is purely cruelty and missing of understanding the meaning of life as a whole. This is lack of comprehension about Gods laws and His creatures. This shows how much morally undeveloped and mentally disturbed you are. A real man does not need to use violence and aggressiveness against the weak ones. The ones who cannot defend themselves. Neither physically nor verbally. Please, be useful in life. Do not put yourself so down. Do not make others feel ashamed for what you do.

97. Rob & Marisol Thomas are trying to do the right thing. Everyone has a cause that they believe in and this is one of theirs. They do wonderful work through their charity , Sidewalk Angels, for both humans and animals. Personally, I'm proud of them for standing up for what they believe in and trying to make a difference.

99. Admittedly, it does not make much sense but I am certain Matchbox Twenty has their reasons. Perhaps Cheyenne has a lesser reputation that none of you are aware of - not every rodeo treats their animals cruelly, but once in a blue moon, there's one so heinous, the reputation gets out. I, for one, support their decision and love them more than I ever did before. Good for you, guys.

100. Rodeos take normally tame, docile animals and provoke them into behavior that makes them appear to be fierce and aggressive.
Rodeos consider these animals to be cheap, expendable, and replaceable. They are used time and again before their bruised and battered bodies end up at the slaughterhouse.

Bulls and horses are tormented in the chutes prior to release into the ring. They are forced to wear bucking straps, and the rider uses spurs, which dig into the animals' flesh. One rodeo cowboy said of bucking straps and electric prods, "If you can't use those devices, then you have no rodeo." (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review Dec. 26, 2000).

Bucking straps are painful. They are cinched tightly around the animals' genitals or abdomen, which makes the horse or steer buck to try and shake off the strap.

Places as diverse as Pittsburgh and the state of Ohio have outlawed the use of the bucking strap on the grounds that it is inhumane. Other states have banned throwing baby calves and goats to the ground and binding their legs.

Steve Gander, organizer of the "World's Toughest Rodeo," admits that bucking horses and bulls are "prodded with an electrical hotshot."

Bucking straps, spurs, electric prods, and severe tail-twisting are all painful ways of forcing animals into aggressive behavior.

Injuries to animals, such as deep internal organ bruising, hemorrhaging, bone fractures, ripped tendons, and torn ligaments and muscles, are all expected and anticipated in this violent tradition.
