PETA to Morrissey: To Sirloin, With Love

PETA is full of bull -- or at least they like hangin' with people who are full of it.

The animule rights organization called us out for calling Morrissey out yesterday. You see, vegetarian Morrissey, who wrote the song/album, "Meat is Murder," chowed down at STK -- a hip steakhouse in West Hollywood. PETA says it's ok for hard-core veggies to eat at a steakhouse because -- and we quote -- "Steakhouses have some of the best vegetarian food around." Oh yeah, gotta love that Kobe cauliflower! Maybe Morrissey gets a pass 'cause he's a believer.

PETA big cheese Ingrid Newkirk tells TMZ she's got no beef with steakhouses -- she's been to the STK in New York herself.

We're wondering if it's ok for Pam Anderson to shop for spandex at Fred the Furrier...

UPDATE: Michael McGraw from PETA just called us to say he was upset by our story, adding, "PETA is fine with vegetarians dining at steakhouses. It's just like shopping at stores like Whole Foods that also sell meat, because it's good to show proprietors they can make money by selling veggie options." Um, OK. What about getting mashed potatoes at KFC?

46. As a vegan, I would like to point out how hard it is to find places to eat that are strictly vegan or vegetarian. So, should I not go to a mexican restaurant and get a tofu burrito just because they sell meat there, too? I live in one of the most vegan friendly places in the US, but we only have 2 restaurants that are strictly vegan. While I will not eat anything with meat or dairy or animal products, I will not eat at only 2 restaurants for the rest of my life, either.

47. Is this the group that assaults and terrorizes people for wearing fur? They dictate their vegetarianism to others? They publish nude photos using D list actors? IMO, the current leadership of PETA is the worst thing to ever happen to them and their image - not intelligent at all.

48. Good grief. Don't some of you vegetarians see how stupid you are? If you're a vegetarian because you don't condone eating animals, how on earth can you eat at a steakhouse? By spending your dollars there , regardless of what you eat you tacitly approve of eating meat.

49. You guys clearly don't get vegetarianism, and are just trying to enflame the public. Feel free to bash away, as long as you actually know what you're talking about. As for mashed potatoes at KFC, they would indeed be okay for vegetarians as long as they are made with vegetable stock rather than chicken stock.

50. That Penn and Teller show was very interesting to watch. I'm all for animal rights, but PETA is just absolutely ridiculous. It is possible to campaign for animal rights without taking such a hardline stance and condemning everything and everyone that you don't agree with. If I'm not mistaken, PETA doesn't even agree with people owning pets - such as dogs. It is just a fanatical organization that is about two steps away from being a full-fledged cult!

51. 37. Clue4U - I was questioning what you said, not PETAs position on
cow farming. I am not stupid nor obtuse, but if you feel the need to
start name-calling to get your invalid point across, then go ahead.
I'm glad it makes you feel better, being the big internet bully and
such. Go back and turn on Fox News and enjoy the rest of your day.

Actually I simply said you were wrong and pointed out why. I believe it was you who began name calling with your sarcastic "knower of all things" comment.

You are back-peddling and trying to argue Symantics. You wanted to
know when PETA ever said that particular steakhouse participated in inhumane
treatment of animals. I have pointed out to you that per their own
website and literature every steakhouse must be participating in it then.

You apparently do not like to lose an argument based on facts and I believe I've proven it is hypocrisy, based on what they preach, for them to eat at a steak house.

Again, you did toss out the first insult, so you really can't be mad that I called your bluff and returned in kind.

52. Rose - just because WE don't approve of ourselves eating meat it doesn't mean we have an issue with others doing so. Stupid.

53. Rebecca, I think there is a difference between being Vegan and being PETA!

Based on their fanatical views, as listed on their web site, they are violating everything they espouse by contributing to the financial wellbeing of a place that serves meat.

That does not mean the NORMAL, not red paint-throwing, non-kid scarring vegan should not eat a steakhouse.

54. Hey TMZ, try to stick to useless tabloid fodder. It's what you do best. Trying to engage yourselves in meaningful societal issues that actually carry merit or have an effect on our daily lives in a "real" way just isn't your bag. Your "reporters" (notice the lack of the word 'journalists') just don't have the skills nor the talent for it.
Hurry! I think John Mayer is getting away!

56. Ah Rose, dear Rose. Based on your comment, it looks like vegetarians would be considered "stupid" by shopping at grocery stores, or eating at Italian, Mexican, Japanese, Indian...well, just about any restaurant as most restaurants do indeed offer meat on their menus. Maybe open your eyes, and your mind, and try not to judge people without knowing what you're talking about.

57. Clue4U - You are a bully. Let me guess: you're probably fat, have no friends, and get off on calling people names on the internet. Am I close? I'm sure I am. THERE. I'm not arguing about PETA. Happy?

58. By dining at an establishment that serves meat, you're funding the mistreatment of animals, aren't you? I mean, you're helping keep them in business. If they aren't in business then eventually the demand for meat will go down, etc etc etc.

Peta is stupid.

i understand where you are coming from and im sure you don't mind if other's partake in carniverous diets, however PETA does.

and for all the vegetarian's who are saying they eat in restaurants that serve meat: don't you realize many times the food at restaurants aren't handled separately. a prep could be making the salad right after he had touched grilled chicken or steak. and plus, when you choose to have a diet that is very limited you must also limit your lifestyle in some way. if you don't have many veg establishments in your town, then do the CHEAPER and INTELLIGENT thing and make your own meals at home. you will know how everything is handled... etc.

when i look at people starving around the world, the idea of mass production of food is a miracle. if we have the ability to generate mass amounts of food in a world where the population is booming and poverty is blatant...i don't think it is such a horrible thing in comparison. i don't think a kid in rowanda would care if he was eating meat or veggies as long as he had food. its amazing to me that in america we are arguing over what the other person eats. many places in the world people are arguing and killing eachother to get a damn bowl of rice! just shows how spoiled and selective we are.

whatever you are is fine with me. just don't impose, especially when you are being a hypocrite.

60. Wait a minute - I didn't know becoming a vegetarian meant I was chained only to those types of restaurants. Whoa, do I have to shop at vegetarian grocery stores now too? Maybe I should grow my own vegetables and prance around with my hippie friends? Oh yeah, this makes LOADS of sense, TMZ. I thought you were better than this.

Being a vegetarian doesn't mean anything more than you don't eat meat or meat byproducts. So, fine, being an advocate for PETA can be a tad incriminating, but think about this.

It's the same as people who don't eat carbs or seafood or whatever. Just don't eat that stuff. They don't boycott every place that serves lobster or pasta. Why? Um, probably because that'd leave them with about two places to go out and eat, and one of the two would probably be a gas station.

Seriously. If it's a place with a legit vegetarian selection, then go ahead and eat. Why not?
