Wesley Gets Three Years!!!

4/24/2008 6:53 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Wesley SnipesA judge has just sentenced Wesley Snipes to three years in prison for tax evasion. Forget black -- always bet on the U.S. government!

Snipes was not forced to surrender immediately. Instead, the judge ruled he could surrender at a later date, closer to his New Jersey home.

Nathan J. Hochman, Assistant Attorney General of the Justice Department's Tax Division, said, "Snipes' long prison sentence should send a loud and crystal clear message to all tax defiers that if they engage in similar tax defier conduct, they face joining him and his co-defendants ... as inmates in prison."

Snipes was convicted in February on three misdemeanor charges for not filing his taxes. The government claimed he owed $2.7 mil -- but Snipes' attorneys argued it was just $228,000. No fine was imposed, but the three-year sentence was the max he could have gotten.

Celebrity friends Denzel Washington and Woody Harrelson wrote letters in his defense to appeal for leniency. Oh well ...

This is what he gets. I am a black woman and not a fan of Wesley at all. He did not pay his taxes...BOTTOM LINE. The only color the IRS sees is green, and when it is not in their hands....they will take anyone down.

The U.S. population, supported by promises of democrats, and unfortunately now too, republicans, are woefully mistaken on what the role of government should be. It should neither be to help you, hurt you, take from you, nor give to you, but it should be there to protect your freedom. This is the essence of the American republic. That sentiment is dead among the people and the politicians. Everyone should stop paying taxes. They deserve no more. Won't happen though. People are too afraid of "terrorists", so they support trying to control the world through military threats and "aid packages." Sheesh.

True democracy ends when voters learn that they can vote to give themselves money.

I don't understand why so many folks here are so sympathetic for Snipes. Everyone has a duty to bear their fair-share tax burden for funding the government and government programs and public services. Everyone who dodges their fair-share burden and cheats the system places a greater burden on everyone else and it is like they are picking the pockets of everyone else or gate crashing without paying. Forget Snipes cheated the IRS and remember that he cheated all of you!

Comparing Snipes' sentence to those received by Paris Hilton and Lindsey Lohan is irrelevant. Snipes was convicted on three FEDERAL counts of tax evasion and received one year for each count. I doubt he'll serve the entire sentence. He willfully chose to not pay his taxes which hurts each and every one of us who do pay. If he were white, pink or purple, I'd say the same thing. We all have an obligation to pay our taxes.

Why do they "need" to riot? Since when did that ever correct an issue? You have to fight what you think is an injustice in the same legal forum as the government. If you don't like the justice system then work to change it. Instead of hip-hopping on the streets go to law school.
You can't fight the US government on taxes. They mean business, and that's what it is...business. They come take your paycheck, your house, your car and any assets you have. They put you in jail. Everyone knows this so why did he try to evade it?
There's people in government that think not paying taxes is tantamount (yes a big word look it up) to treason.
Like has been said, the only color they care about is the green (or blue or purple) of the money. And he'll go to the Fed prison.
Hey...there IS a silver lining here Wesley, you can do some awesome research for your next made for TV movie about prison and you can write a book, you'll have plenty of time now.

It is sad when the government spends more time putting people in jail for tax evasion than for murder, rape and child abuse. I do believe WE ALL should pay our taxes, Just because he is rich does not mean he does not have to, But 3 years........When there are drunk drivers and child molesters walking the streets right now who got a slap on the wrist, and have offended time and time again. Like we will actually be seeing the money that Uncle Sam will be getting from him.....Government gets money and all they do is give their people pay raises.... LOL When has the government actually worked for the people???

Thank you #244 and #242. Some intelligent people. I pay my taxes ONLY because I do not want the government to put it in my butt like they just did to Mr. Snipes; not because there is a law stating that I have to pay, BECAUSE THERE IS NOT! I don't have money to pay for a good enough lawyer. But I hope Mr. Snipes, with his wealth, will be able to get this appealed and bring attention to the fact that federal income tax laws are completely UNCONSTITUTIONAL and ILLEGAL! Of course the government will try to put him ASAP because they don't want that happening. PLEASE watch the movie Zeitgiest (you can watch it online on their website). You may be surprised by the things going on in our government. I'm not saying to believe everything in the movie, because that would be just as bad as believing everything told to you by the government. But look for points of interest and do your own research, for God's sake people, wake up and look at how f-ed up our world really is.
