A judge has just sentenced Wesley Snipes to three years in prison for tax evasion. Forget black -- always bet on the U.S. government!
Snipes was not forced to surrender immediately. Instead, the judge ruled he could surrender at a later date, closer to his New Jersey home.
Nathan J. Hochman, Assistant Attorney General of the Justice Department's Tax Division, said, "Snipes' long prison sentence should send a loud and crystal clear message to all tax defiers that if they engage in similar tax defier conduct, they face joining him and his co-defendants ... as inmates in prison."
Snipes was convicted in February on three misdemeanor charges for not filing his taxes. The government claimed he owed $2.7 mil -- but Snipes' attorneys argued it was just $228,000. No fine was imposed, but the three-year sentence was the max he could have gotten.
Celebrity friends Denzel Washington and Woody Harrelson wrote letters in his defense to appeal for leniency. Oh well ...

Wow...good lesson, people...the government will let you owe them tax, but you MUST file a return...he was given some bad advice.
People crying this is about skin color check this: The IRS could care less what color your skin is. The only color they care about is the color of your money and that is all they want. One way or another...they will get it and if you mess with them then you will go to jail. Wesley knew what he was doing and was caught and dealt with. Comparing this crime to crimes by Paris, Nicole and Lohan is stupid. Saying that means that you think justice is fair and news flash...it isn't. That is reality.
well, i feel so much more at ease knowing that our government and legal system care so much about money and not so much about the lives that are put at risk when a drunk gets behind the wheel of a car.
Oh yes, and when you go to collect your social security (that won't be there, by the way) when you retire, you'll be taxed on that, too. Even though social security IS a type of tax. Double taxation.
This is an awesome country, but we can make it better!

I think the folks here need to do a little self-educating...people, people, DUI is not the same thing as tax evasion, state law is not the same as federal law, collecting taxes is not the same as 'collecting' drunk drivers, black folks are held to the same tax laws as white folks,...and I would harldy call Snipes a 'celebrity,' I mean, what has he done lately?

LOL! A letter from Woody Harrelson? Like that would have any weight. A letter from him would be the LAST thing I'd want to present to a judge to help prove I'm a man of character!
PAY THOSE TAXES FOLKS... as for "racist" comments... guess what? I knew TWO white, affluent families who did not pay their taxes and guess what? Both sets of parents went into the slammer. One set of parents went in for 4 years and the other kid's dad went in for 5 YEARS!!! No suspended sentences! Guess the federal government means business... especially when we are in MAJOR DEFICIT.
