Modine's Use of the N-Word Just Ain't Wright

Matthew Modine hurled the N-word for all to hear on "The O'Reilly Factor" last night. He was making a point about Reverend Jeremiah Wright and then mentioned his daddy, who used to refer to blacks as uppity N****rs. The N-word was bleeped, but what Matt is saying is plain as day.

47. The "n" word is so hypocritically looked upon as a nuclear bomb. It exists, black people call each other niogger all the time. Just becauise a white person says it should not mean castigation; he was using it to make an alliteration. As for the moron who said Fox news has racists on all the time, keep in mind they are the same pundits who are on every news station. I hope that ignoramus does not vote.

48. the n word will never go away as long as blacks try to downgrade the word to something other than its true meaning originally a spanish word (nigroe) maaning black and nothing else.our society has made it a different meaning to suite thier own ways

49. I think that in this polititcally correct society we live in, there is just as much racism, prejudice and bias as there ever was. I grew up with a father who used the N word all the time, just like Matthew Modine. I knew since I was a small child that that was the wrong way to think and pride myself on seeing people for who they are, not what color they are. It's tough, I've been called a lot of things by African Americans, even just walking through some shopping malls here in Vegas, you can get called some horrible names because you are white. It's sad, but racism is a two way street.

50. I have not seen white people or other race feel so comfortable about be racist in my entire life...Since Obama decided to run it's as if everyone think it is open season on african american...to the person who said we should go back to Africa I will when all of you go back to Europe because everyone came here from somewhere. We just didn't have a choice! The mind is a terrible thing to waste, some of you need to read a book instead of posting hate online, maybe you will learn something. He may not have meant anything by his commits, however one have to be mindful of what they say, this word shouldn't be use in anyway. What I'm or concern about is the comments made by Pat Buchanan.

51. If used in the context of an example of the old way of thinking, I think he can be excused. If used in a context of "look at me, a smart, educated caucasion that is not afraid to use this word on national tv to get my point across", it's real close to the line.

Somewhere, somehow, sometime, the double standard on the use of this reprehesible word needs to be sorted out. Blacks use it, but whites cannot, however blacks using it reinforces the stereotype and continued acceptance and misuse of the word by other groups that just think it's hip. It is not. It is a term of slavery, of oppression, of a caste that has long since disappeared, except in the black community which shouldn't be offended if they themselves can continue to utter the word in public.

I am not black, but I detest the word, and yes, I heard my daddy say it to, regularly, but that didn't make it right for me, or him.

52. You all are aware that his wife of 28 years is black... Right??

53. He was quoting another person (i.e., his dad). So what is wrong with that? Is our country so PC now that white people can't even say that word when quoting another person as an example?

Posted at 4:18PM on Apr 30th 2008 by so what?

54. I'm sick of the double standard - nothing wrong with this - being politically correct nonsense is getting tiring. Like white people haven't been called all kinds of names. Where is Al Sharpton when that happens - predictably no where around. If you can dish it, you can take it. Get over it.

55. Freedom of speech, we can say the N word all day everyday it's our right. Just as Wright is exercising his freedom with his rants.

56. I am actually more ticked about #2's comment. First off blacks were forced to leave there home in order to work like cattle with worse treatment. SO no thanks for the slave trade on that one. And second, America was anything but the land of opportunity when they arrived. Did you forget the whole civil rights movement. Keep you neo-nazi views to yourself redneck and go screw your sister.

57. POINT BLANK WHITE PPL IN AMERICA HAVE FINALLY REACHED A POINT TO WHERE THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE PAST ATROUSITIES OF THEIR FORE FATHERS THEY ARE DETACHING THEMSELVES FROM THE VILE HUMAN BEINGS THEY WERE SPAWNED FROM AND THEY ARE BELITTLING THE USE OF RACIAL SLURS AND RACIST ACTS BECAUSE THEY ARE "OK" SINCE SOME BLACK PPL USE THE TERMS THEMSELVES AND WHITE AMERICA AND THEIR MEDIA SUPPORT HAS ACCOMIDATED THE UNDERCOVER RACIST AND CONTINUE TO ALLOW THESE TYPES OF INFRACTIONST TO OCCUR BECAUSE THEY INFACT AGREE WITH THIS. IF YOU LOOK AT THE INJUSTICES BEING DONE TO AFRICAN AMERICANS BY THE "JUSTICE SYSTEM " BLACK PPL ARE BASICALLY BEING RAPED AND HUNG ONLY IN A DIFFERENT OR MORE "POLITICALLY CORRECT WAY". ITS A SIGN OF THE TIMES ITS BEEN SAID SO MANY TIMES BEFORE AMERICA DOES NOT CARE ABOUT BLACK PPL AND ITS BECOMMING MORE AND MORE EVIDENT IN THE MEDIAS DISMISSAL OF RACIAL SLURS AND THEIR UTTER DUSGUST WITH GAY SLURS BEING USED. BEING KIND TO BLACK PPL IS NOLONGER IN AMERICAS NEW POSTER CHILD IS GAY PPL. AND FOR ALL U MAD AZZ PPL READING THIS DONT BLAIM ME BLAIM YOUR RELATIVES BECAUSE IM SURE MOST OF U WILL BE WHITE. I agree, My father was the same way, and sometimes used those words but even back then I knew it was wrong. And yes, racism is a two way street. When a comedian who is black calls white people "cracker" or otherwise pokes fun at us, it's all a joke and we all laugh, but when white comics make fun of black folks, he's racist. Huh??

60. I completely agree with him. I'm African American and White and I don't use the N word at all. It's ignorant for anyone of any race to use it, but I do agree with the point he was trying to make. Many people of that generation still have the views that were expressed back then. It’s sad. The way I see we all need to embrace our differences. God created us all different for a reason.
