David Cook Won't Royally Screw Kids

5/2/2008 12:25 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

David CookRoyals fans can rest easy -- there won't be 25 crying kids in the crowd when David Cook comes to town.

Cook was approached by the Kansas City Royals to sing the national anthem at game on May 9. The problem is 25 elementary kids were already booked.

A spokesperson for the Royals told TMZ that Cook didn't feel comfortable bumping the kids -- so he'll sing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" during the 7th inning stretch instead, and throw out the first pitch.

Cook was invited to the game because if he survives another week of "Idol," he'll be making a trip home Blue Springs, MO. for a visit.

Wow! This is just another reason to love Cookie! I had an experience just recently during my school's basketball season where I was asked by my music teacher supposedly by request from the Sports Coordinator of the school (also the VP) to sing the National Anthem for the special tournament that our Varsity Boys were hosting that weekend. Naturally, the thrill of performance and awe that I was asked "specially" made me nervous and excited for this opportunity to show my school pride! I was asked about a week and an half prior and when it came to the actual warming up of my voice, I was wringing my hands in anticipation... I wanted to get in there and do it!
I warmed up for a good half hour to make sure I could give the best performance in my ability and then had to wait in our band/choir room for the time to come for me to sing. I finally got to go into the gym and as per usual, I walked up to the announcer's stand and told him I was ready to sing... my vice principal was there with a none-too apologetic look on his face. "We have asked our principal to sing instead," he informed me. I leaned back slightly, shocked mildly by the news. I thought, 'Perhaps it's just some silly mistake...'
The VP directed me in the principal's direction so that I could discuss it with him. My heart was pounding heavily as it was dawning on me that he was dead serious in thinking I would NOT be singing...
I started to talk with my principal and in a nut shell I was embarrassed and ended up walking away in tears because my principal wouldn't stand up for me and let me sing instead of him! I had told so many people, and many came just to hear me sing...
It hurt and he apologized afterward, but I really wish he had the sincere backbone of David Cook!
Thank you David!

Poster #9, I'm over 40 and David Cook is my favorite contestant. He only "screams" when it's appropriate for the song. I find his song choices and arrangements to show some forethought and nuance. I particularly thought his performance of "Music of the Night" transcended his genre and showed that he has some well-trained chops. I believe he can sing nearly anything. I never even LIKED MOTN thanks to Michael Crawford's syrupy voice, but David has made me rethink the song. I downloaded the studio cut from iTunes and it's exquisite. He can pretty much write his own ticket to superstardom at this point.

That was so sweet of him!! I honestly think that he'd do an amazing job singing the national anthem. But he'll sing it after he wins Idol. David Cook WILL win American Idol. He is the total package. Amazing voice, great personality, handsome. He will go very far in his career and I can't wait. Don't forget to vote for him tonight!!!!!
