"Lost" Diary -- Something Nice Back Home

LostHey, Daniel from TMZ here -- welcome to another edition of the "Lost" Diary.

I've bemoaned the lack of "TiVo Moments" this season on "Lost" -- and now I'm wondering if the lack of cliffhangers has sort of killed the anticipation for "Lost" each week. I've looked quickly back at the last few weeks worth of endings and only the "I'm Ben's daughter!" ending really left you hanging. I don't know, maybe it's just me but I don't have the same "LOST IS ON!!!" feeling lately.

For all you "Lost" Diary newbies, here's how it goes: I gather with a group of friends watching "Lost," writing what happens on the show as it happens, and throwing in my two cents along the way. Ari and Lauren are in Costa Rica, so I am flying solo tonight. Let's roll ...

10:00 -- Jack isn't looking so hot. I didn't see this coming at all. Oh wait, yes I did! Hey ABC -- stop airing "Lost" promos! We know it's on. All you're doing is ruining it for us. Does anyone really think that someone watching the NBA Finals is going to stumble on a promo for "Lost" and say, "Hey that show looks good. Maybe I should give it a try"? Really?

10:01 -- Oh no, Jack fainted. Maybe he'll die. Oh wait, we already know he lives! I'll stop now, promise.

10:02 -- Jack flashforward time and it looks like we're getting "somewhat well-adjusted Jack" instead of "raging lunatic Jack." Perhaps this week will fill-in that blank a little bit for us.

10:03 -- Jack's got a lady friend -- and a kid. With Juiet, perhaps?

10:04 -- in an upset, it's Kate. I wonder where in the timeline we are here -- after Kate's trial, but before Jack goes crazy?

10:07 -- From the looks of things, Jack and Kate are playing house now, and have for some time. It's definitely post-trial. BTW -- Kate in a dress shirt? Thumbs up.

10:10 -- Whoa -- looks like Rousseau didn't survive. A little anti-climactic, a tad shocking and a bit disappointing. Great scene with Miles though. More of him, please.

10:12 -- Even if I didn't know Jack makes it off the island, I would never want to watch a show that kills off a main character because of appendicitis. Lame.

10:16 -- Juliet is barking orders around and Kate is standing around looking worried and all I can think is this: How did I ever think Juliet was hotter than Kate? It's not even close. Evangeline, my apologies.

10:18 -- Rose thinks the island made Jack sick on purpose -- to keep him on the island, perhaps.

10:19 -- Jack wants Kate to be in the surgery. Apparently he thinks at some point someone is going to be needed to be held at gunpoint.

10:20 -- Jack's back to seeing his dad. Sweet.

10:21 -- And Hurley is back to being crazy. Nice.

10:23 -- "You're not supposed to raise him, Jack." -- Hurley

10:24 -- "Charlie said someone is going be visiting you too. Soon." -- Hurley. Remember last week when I said anytime "Lost" does a scene that's longer than like 2 minutes it's always amazing? No exception here.

10:28 -- Farraday and company are at the medical station and Jin and Sun are back to speaking Korean. I missed subtitles. Only problem? I think Charlotte speaks Korean. Just a hunch.

10:29 -- Lawnmower Man emerged from the bushes with a sat phone and a warning -- HIDE. Sawyer and company smartly listen.

10:30 -- Seems the smoke monster spared all the bad guys from last week. What the hell did it do then?

10:31 -- "Looks like I'm gonna be your nurse." -- Kate. "Wouldn't the first time." -- Jack. Nice throwback to the premiere episode, when Kate sewed up Jack's wound.

10:32 -- Jack is camped outside Hurley's mental hospital. Looking for Charlie, maybe?

10:34 -- "Will you marry me?" -- Jack

10:35 -- "Yes." -- Kate

10:39 -- Have I mentioned lately how much I love Jin? He just totally bitch-slapped Charlotte -- in Korean -- and it was awesome. I want Jin to be my friend.

10:40 -- Jack appendectomy time. I think he'll make it.

10:41 --

10:42 -- Jack is really, really back to seeing his dad again. Next stop, Crazytown.

10:44 -- And here comes the drug addiction. Choo, choo! All aboard!

10:45 -- "Jack's never home before 8. I can stay about an hour." Kate to ... Noreen? I don't think so.

10:46 -- Two pills with a beer? Man, Jack is getting right to it, ain't he?

10:47 -- Ok, now Claire sees Christian holding Aaron. Is anyone NOT crazy this week?

10:50 -- Juliet gracefully stepped aside, basically giving Jack and Kate permission to screw. Classy move, considering she's a whore.

10:51 -- "I know you're awake." -- Juliet to Jack

10:52 -- Jack is obliterated and jealous. Things are about to get good.

10:53 -- What man in his right mind would "let it go" when he asks where his fiancee is? Not even Jack would let that non-answer slide.

10:54 -- WHOA!!! SAWYER IS ALIVE ON THE ISLAND!!!

10:55 -- And it's Claire's Aaron. That's now settled.

10:56 -- I think Jack can flush that Father of the Year award down the toilet now.

10:57 -- Claire seems to have followed Christian into the night and disappeared.

10:58 -- If that's the last we ever see of Claire again, that would be BEYOND awesome.

10:59 -- "CLAIRE!!!!!" -- Sawyer. Not as good as "WAAAAAALT!!!!"

Yet another high-level episode of "Lost" -- though I don't think I can sit through another week without Desmond. Feels like the producers know he's the man, so they spread out the Desmond love so as not to waste it. I thoroughly enjoyed this episde -- B for sure -- but I have the same odd feeling after this one that I have had after nearly every episode this season.

I used to judge each episode with the question, "What have we learned?" But lately, we haven't been learning much -- but the episodes have still been top-notch. I am not going to go note-for-note, but we haven't learned anything Earth-shattering this season. The biggest revelations have occurred off the island, and some would argue that all they have done is give away what will happen on the island.

Again -- don't take this as me bashing this season. I have loved it. But at the same time I am left to wonder -- has this season really accomplished anything in the grand scheme of things? Everyone has moved around a bit, the freighter people have landed -- but really, what else is there? I could probably explain what has happened this season in like a minute.

I have often argued there is a difference between a good episode of "Lost" and a GOOD EPISODE OF "LOST" -- last year's Nikki and Paulo episode being a great example." I feel like we've been getting good episodes, but not GOOD episodes. Hope that makes sense.

So my question to you this week is this -- as good as "Lost" has been this year, do you still feel robbed by it? I kinda do. 'Til next week ...

91. A boring "filler" episode. I rate it a "C".

92. cin1003...no, Jack is a Red Sox fan; Hurley meant living with Kate and Aaron "sounds like Heaven." Another blog has an interesting hypothesis...that Claire was actually killed when the RPG hit her house last week, and that she's a ghost of some sort...Christian, her dad, came to take her to the light. Oh, and I think the island made Jack sick because he's not learning his lessons, that he's not supposed to be the in-control leader all the time.

93. i'm not totally obsessive about Lost, but I do LOVE it and often watch episodes twice. anyhooch, i have a CRAZY theory that popped into my head after watching last night...any chance Christian slept w/ Claire (either before he knew that was his daughter or in the super duper evil way) and Aaron is not only Jack's nephew, but also his (ick!) brother? Am I over-reaching here?
Like I said, just a crazy theory that popped into my head so i thought i'd share it w/ real Losties.

94. Kate makes me sick! If this was real like she would have been killed already by one of the other women for hogging up the two hottest on the island.

And I agree Jin has turned out to be totally cool!

95. Hey Daniel,

I agree...it's been a little boring. You should check out The Tudors on Showtime...it's is the best show on TV. You could do some real interesting writing.

96. Didn't anyone notice that Jack told Hurley that he changed his mind about Aaron after the trial!!! That means that Jack and Kate were together after she took the plea. So Jack went crazy before and now (in the future) he is sane again. (for now)

97. Maybe I missed something but didn't Desmond say to Charlie right before he went to the Looking Glass to die that he saw Claire and Aaron get on a helicopter together. He told Charlie that Claire wouldn't be saved unless he died. Did Desmond lie? Apparently Claire must have never gotten off the island if Kate is raising him.

98. I think a bunch of people stay on the island. The creepy dude posing as an Oceanic exec asked Hurley about it when he visited him in the asylum. Also - Ben leveraged Sayid by asking him if he wanted to protect his friends. I took that to mean the people still on the island. There was also that big lie that was told by Jack about the crash and number of survivors during Kates trial. A bunch of Losties chose to stay - Sawyer , Rose & Bernard, definitely Locke if he makes it. I think Claire dies or can't leave the island for some reason. Jin has to die - the actor got a DUI in Hawaii, and that always spells death for your character on LOST.
I am totally disappointed in the Smoke Monster. It came out of there so fast and furious and huge - like we've never seen it before. And what did it do? Just rough up those mercenaries? I figured the leader would get away, but most of those guys should be torn to bits and hanging from the trees. Of course, it was kind of small when it killed Eko, so maybe it is not as dangerous when it's that big. My theory on Smokey is that it is a physical manifistation of all the negative emotions from the island and the people who have died on the island. It seems like pure black emotion to me - rage and hatred and jealousy. Also - I don't think Ben "controls" it - I think Ben knows how to "cage" it. How did it get past the electric barrier into the Others' compound and how did Ben get it contained?
I loved it when Jack totally dissed Juliet by letting her know he still doesn't totally trust her (insisting on staying awake and having Kate in the room). I really hated Juliet and wanted her to die. Now I want Charlotte to die more. Juliet still needs to die, though.
All scenes with Sawyer should require him to be shirtless.

99. jack also seemed to have got rid of his chest hair that he had in season1 somewhere along the line and i just noticed it in this episode

100. Lenny, you are right about Desmond telling Charlie he had a vision of Claire leaving the island with Aaron. but the audience never saw any flashes of his vision. We were shown pieces of all of his other visions so I suspect he needed Charlie to go down to the looking glass for another reason, perhaps to connect with Penny.

101.
Darn! I was one of the people betting the baby was actually Kate's. I lose.

P.S. Am I the only person that notices the people you are supposed to watch it with each week are always out of town? You need to stop hangin' with non-believers:)

102. Hurley was NOT specific to Jack when he read the notes that Charlie gave him-probably not specific for a reason. Anytime Hurley has a scene it brings integrity to the story line. I have always trusted Hurley. I have however never trusted Juliet-she came to the island innocently but soon came under Ben's spell. She only tells the truth when she wants to and it always seems she has a master plan. Also....Folks here have forgotten that Michael couldn't die (in any ways we know of at this point) and other people on the island can't die. But Ben got sick-remember? It seems certain ailments are allowed. BUT pregnant women do die. Hurley thinks they are all dead. Maybe they are dead or will be once off the island. This entire show could be the last thoughts and dreams of a dying airline passenger from the plane-who knows? I hope not. The weird thing is everyone ended up on the island for completely different reasons, but it seems all were destined by a master plan.

103. If I remember correctly at the end of Kate's trial, she wanted Jack to come back with her and Aaron and he told her that he just couldn't and she replied that she understood why, but told him if he changed his mind he knew where he could find them. That makes me think that at the time, he knew that Aaron was his nephew and perhaps felt responsible for something bad that happens that we haven't seen yet. During Kate's trial, she refused to let Jack talk about Aaron and why her being a mother to Aaron should be reason enough to get her out of the charges being filed. So, something that we haven't seen yet must occur that is going to redeem Kate from the bad stuff she did back at home. By the end of the show last night we see Jack beginning to spin into a decline with the drugs and drinking, so we now know where we are in the time line. I still think the first episode of this year is the last episode of the season, Jack trying to kill himself to get back to the island and instead saving the woman who crashes her car at the bridge and then Jack meeting Kate and telling her that he's trying to get back. She's clearly not interested and I think the "he" she's referring to is still Aaron. I wonder if they'll end the season by revisiting that first episode from this season and we'll find out who died and why this tore Jack up and no one else.

104. Aaron looks like a 4 year old because the time of that flash forward was 2007 and he would have been 4. The newpaper article about the Yankees beating the Red Sox was published in the NY Times on August 31, 2007.

105. SMR--call us sick minded but I also thought there is some kind of chance that Claire's dad abused her and Aaron is Christian's child too. Doubtful but the thought crossed my mind because Jack is so insistant that he isn't comfortable around Aaron. Maybe just guilt because he couldn't save Claire as they leave the island.

I love Hurley. He isn't crazy, well, I guess he has to be because he sees people that aren't there but I believe the island sent him those visions. I think he is the key to a lot of our answers.

Interesting theory about Juliette implanting Jack. I buy it.

I knew all along that Desmond was lying to Charlie about seeing Claire and Aaron on a helicopter just to help Charlie die with a peaceful mind.

There is some importance to that book that Jack was reading. Does anyone have anymore details on it? Otherwise a pointless scene I think.

Why does everyone on the island not insist on answers? Sawyer asked Miles how he knew those bodies were there and then just dropped it. Although at this point I would have been perfectly happy with an "I'm psychic" answer. And when did Sawyer get the hots for Claire?

I don't think Jin is dead. I think there is some big coverup by the Oceanic 6 so that no one will go trying to find the ones left behind. Seems odd that so many would choose to stay permanently though--leaving the 6 to go back and tell their loved ones that they were dead. I thought that maybe the 6 left the island with the promise that they would be right back to get more people.

Walt and other children have special powers on the island.

Also the boat didn't know what they were talking about when they asked what happened to the doctor because on their time frame, it hadn't happened yet? Daniel has some kind of head injury but he is a brilliant mind. I think he is truly there in the name of science but again, can't someone insist on an answer out of him?

If Kate is visiting Sawyer's kid then who was she talking to on the phone? And if she did say something about "I can stay an hour, Jack never gets home that early" (I couldn't understand her mumbling) then who is she talking to that knows Jack?

Thanks for doing the blog! I really enjoy the recap. This season has not left me on the edge of my seat yet. I agree whole heartedly that last season when those two were buried alive was the best cliffhanger ever. I can't even remember their names because there is so much going on.

Dear Writers, I need some answers and I need them now. Please, no more new characters. The current ones are tried and true and I just want to figure at least one of them out. I really love Lost but I am losing interest because I can't remember it all. I didn't even remember Sawyer had a kid, I'll have to go back and try to find that episode.
