Merv Doubles Crosses From the Dead

Merv GriffinMerv Griffin -- actually, his production company -- is being sued for allegedly stealing an idea for the game show "Merv Griffin's Crosswords."

TMZ has obtained a copy of a lawsuit, filed today by George Giangrante in LA County Superior Court, alleging he came up with a crossword puzzle game show back in 1995 with a twist -- "a 'double-cross' feature that allowed an opposing player to take all of another player's money with one correct answer, and thus, knock him or her out of contention."

Giangrante claims he pitched the show to Merv's peeps in 2001 and "the late Merv Griffin was particularly interested in a crossword game show." We assume the lawyer who wrote this meant Merv was interested while he was still alive.

Giangrante says Merv's people were so interested, they flew him from New Jersey to Hollywood but ultimately said they were uninterested in the idea. So imagine Giangrante's dismay when he read that "Merv Griffin's Crosswords" in September 2007, allegedly with his patented double-cross feature.

The suit seeks unspecified damages.

16. I agree to a great extent, w/Johnny Cardenas. But, TMZ has failed to make clear of something...the fact that "Merv Griffin Studios" are being sued. They're still operating, and hopefully will for many years to come. This guy suing the company, may very well have reason to do so.

Now, to the children here who have chosen to prove themselves more stupid than the average kid.......I'm not angry @ your parents for allowing you to be up so late on a school night. What does anger me though, is that they choose to have their computers act as your babysitters. TMZ should be charging them for child care. Please do society a favor, and break your parents cycles by either being better parents than those you have, or simply choose NOT to have children of your own.

18. The choice between Clinton and Obama is indeed a vexing one: Choose HIM, you got CATASTROPHE. Choose HER, you got SALVATION. Hmmm,,, That is a tough call...

These OBAMA people are so worthless I almost wish he would win just to prove to them how lousy a president he really would be. But that couldn't even work because he could NEVER, NEVER win a general election against even John McCain.

And, oh, by the way, Hillary Clinton just happens to the best presidential candidate this country has had since George Washington.

FUGGITTABOUDIT!!!!

19. This Jersey guy just might have the last word. He patented the special double cross feature. I'm sure he can prove the Griffin company flew him out to CA and he pitched the idea to them in 2001. Sounds like a fairly strong case.

22. To Henry O & Johnny crap, before you make stupid coments, If you remenbered correctly, Merv had just died before the show even aired, so know the facts before you open out your fat pie hole. A patent is a patent, it was filed, I'm sure you can read, so do it.

23. I personally know George Giangrante. He is an upstanding citizen and is only asking for what is rightfully his. He thought of and patented the idea. For someone like Merv Griffin ( who was wealthy beyond most of our dreams) to steal this idea is truly sad. Merv's wife and production company should do the right thing and admit that it was only put into production as a game show AFTER George Giangrante presented it to Merv Griffin's people. And for the record, it was being pursued prior to Merv's death, we can't help that he died. I personally hope that George Giangrante gets compensated for the idea he patented and for the royalties he is due as the show is a big success.

24. for all the haters out there, wouldn't it be nice to finally see the little guy win for a change. it's as a blatant as can be from the patent info. i took a look at the dates, and by the way it doesn't take a genius to steal. this poor guy has everything to lose and the big co. has everything to gain, so what if they're caught, big deal they're a multi million $ co. they can afford it, what they probably didn't expect is, this man to be prepared and to stand up to them. maybe this will get some attention and expose the fraud of these big entertainment co's. if that happened to you, wouldn't you want to do something about it?
this man from new jersey deserves his day in court, he was brave enough to take on these people for stealing his idea, marketing it and producing, they prob. thought they could get away with it, but finally someone stood up for themselves and is doing something about it. awesome! good luck!

26. As if Merv Griffin needs some guy from Jersey to make a TV show. Get real.

Posted at 5:52PM on May 6th 2008 by LucasW12

27. You can't patent an idea for a TV show. That's ridiculous. You can't patent any type of ideas. Patents are for products. No way this guy's gets a penny.

28. Just read the complaint on LA County's web site, sound like The Jersey guy has a good case. Ha Ha Merv's, you fruit. Just like The Barkay's sang back in the day, The fruits come out at night, the fruits come out of night. Once again, another stolen idea from the little guy. Ahhh, but this time is has a patent on the show & the original idea. Hope he gets millions...

YOU GO GEOGRIE, MAKE JERSEY PROUD!

29. Hey Lucas,
Looks like Merv did need some guy from Jersey to steal an idea for a game show, It's clear cut. Read the case . You can google it and see the actual case filed in Los Angelos Superior court yesterday. He has a very strong case. As far as Merv dying....He knew of the pending law suit before his sudden death....
