Actually, the article is correct and you are wrong. "Couple" is singular. "The couple WAS married" is proper grammar, as is "The couple HAS no children."

19. Actually "the couple has no children" is correct english because the "has" is referring to couple - as a whole, single noun, not the two people who make up the couple.

So also, yes, the couple "was" married is correct.
