Hollywood Cheapskates and Tightwads

So our spies at a few Hollywood restaurants have weighed in on celeb tippers and gyppers. And the verdict is in.

We're told the worst celeb tippers at STK are two of the richest folk in town -- the Beckhams. We're told a restaurant once comped David and Victoria, and guess how much they left by way of tip? Nada.

On the other end of the spectrum, Ryan Seacrest is off the charts, once leaving five hundred dollars on a one hundred dollar tab. He's either a really nice guy or he just sucks at math.

UPDATE: The owner of STK tells us that our spy is wrong, the Beckhams are "great customers and excellent tippers."

46. A family member worked as a chef in Hollywood - David Beckham visited the restaurant - He orded a steak - The steak wasn't as rare as he would like it and he stormed into the kitchen and threatened the chef's life if e didn't get it right. Seems like tis man's ego is beyond stardom.

47. This whole thing about waiters having to pay if you don't tip is nonsense. The IRS mandates that 8% of the gross sales of the server must be reported as income. Since the custom is nearly double that, it would mean that a server would have to be stiffed by half of their customers to have to pay out of pocket. If only half of your customers are tipping, then you really should not be a server.

This rule is necessary because waiters frequently fail to accurately report their tips, especially the cash ones. So not only do they feel entitled to 15% of the total bill, but they also feel entitled to paying a disproportionately less in taxes compared to others making the same amount. To put it another way, they not only want YOU to subsidize their income, but they want YOU to pick up the slack on their tax obligation too.

48. I don't understand the concept of not tipping. I don't just tip waiters/waitresses, I tip the hair stylist, the valet, anyone who is providing a service I receive. It's just what you should do - or at least that's how I was raised.

People that don't tip must not have ever worked in a service position before. I usually tip at least 25% of the total bill. I'm in no way rich, but I have respect for the people doing the work. I won't go out if I can't leave a healthy tip.

Those of you that think tipping is a crock....try standing on your feet all day and getting yelled at by self important idiots because some small thing wasn't right. You'll change your tune.

On the other side of the fence though...poor service means small or no tip.

52. How disgusting and cheap some of these people are. Even if it's not your custom to tip, common sense should tell you the wait staff does not make a million dollars an hour like you do. Would it hurt to leave a lousy 100 DOLLARS. I hope you don't get paid for your ugly ads Vicoria Beckham. Greedy people like this just keep on making money for nothing and expect everything for free. You celeberties when you get comped, don't be low class and leave a few hundered for people that do not make hardly anything.

53. Tipping is a U.S. custom, while the vast majority of the world does not tip. While people here in the states think it's the proper and right thing to do, we are actually in the MINORITY, so think about that for a moment self-righteous tippers! All this public service sector talk is ridiculous. Tipping was probably started by some rich person in the past and it trickled down to the common person, now the common person is obligated to tip when they walk into a restaurant because of what some wealthy pip pip people did. If people would never had started tipping "people in public service" they would be paid normally. Who tips the garbage man? Who tips the street cleaners? Who tips the janitors? They are public service, but who tips them??? They get paid low wages too, but don't beg for money like waiters, valet, bell boys, etc. I guess we are only supposed to tip people who bring us a plate of food, but not the people who actually clean our streets and buildings and do the dirty work. If you think I am cheap, tight, and lame, damn right I am, thank you very much, and I don't give people my hard earned money either. Seen the movie Reservoir Dogs? I am Mr. Pink! Screw tipping!

55. Tipping is not a new thing to people like the Beckhams. They just have no class.

Most people tip well and are thoughtful of the wait-staff who work hard so they can enjoy a nice meal out without hassles of preparing it themselves.

My mama had a rule, "if you cannot afford a tip go eat at McDonald's because someone is serving you treating you to a SERVICE.

I have been had a comp meal or two. I pay the server whatever I would have had I also had to pay for the meal.

The beckhams are just plain cheap!

57. I think that that is pathetic. The Beckham's are worth over a billion dollars and they have been around the world about as many times as you and I have been to the local mall. They know better. If I was the manager of STK, I would tell them to never come back unless they can have some respect for the employee's who tried to give them a nice experience FOR FREE! Leaving 20% on a tab for them would be like leaving 20 cents for the normal person.

In other celeb tipping news:
Good Tippers: James Denton, Steven Tyler, Stuart Copeland
Medium Tippers: Eric Szmanik, Bruce Willis, Kirsten Dunst, Eva Mendes, Bob Saget
Bad Tippers: Kevin Bacon, Adrian Grenier, Kate Moss, Courtney Love, Pete Yorn

58. Hey Rico, I don't believe in tipping. I think it is a silly custom in our Country, the origin of which most people are unaware. You wrote "For those that don't believe in tipping then take your butt to McDonalds, In and Out Burger and the like that do not require tipping to pay their employees." Guess what, no restaurant "requires" tipping (not even those that tack on a percentage to large groups). Your mentality is the problem. It is expected and thus an obligation. In being an obligation it has lost all meaning and no longer symbolizes what it is intended to symbolize which is a show of appreciation for great service

These sheep defending those in the tip industries are the same that drop change in the jar at starbucks because it’s there. Use your brains less you end up working in a tip industry.

You're full of s**t Sherry!! Exactly, if their meal was comped, they should've at least left a very generous tip. I'm in the restaurant business and over here in Texas, we get 2.13 an HOUR plus tips. So of course we have to depend on the tips in order to survive. Just face it. the beckhams are despicable ignoramuses that should send their a**es back to the u.k.

60. As soneone who has spent over 30 yrs in and out of the hospitality business I can say that those of you who don't believe in tipping are just ignorant. First of all restaurant workers and many other "tipped" positions only pay less than HALF of minimum wage. Are we supposed to work for $2.63 an hour ? Would YOU work for $2.63 an hour ?? Not every tipped position gets paid min wage. Those who DO get paid min wage or more... ie , bartenders, hairdressers, valets, porters etc... sure.. tipping is GRAVY but for waitstaff it's LITERALLY their bread and butter. Most people who work in high class restaurants do so because there is the potential to make a VERY good income ( but then again you must have SKILLS and PERSONALITY ).

To the person who commented that a server serving an expensive meal shouldn't get tipped more than a person serving an inexpensive meal... that's just rubbish. High class restaurants demand waitstaff that is not only knowledgeable about the food but the "service" is much more complicated and involved and is done with a much higher "standard". You certainly cannot compare a waitress at the local Denny's with a server at the Waldorf Astoria ! Also higher class diners demand MUCH MUCH more personal attention and from experience I know for a fact some like to run their servers ragged.

The Beckhams know full well that they ought to tip, even if a meal is comped. A restaurant comping a meal has absolutely NOTHING to do with whether or not a server should get tipped for service. If service was rendered , a tip is in order and that tip should be based on the ORIGINAL bill total. The same goes for going to a restaurant and getting discounts using gift certificates or coupons. Tips should ALWAYS be calculated on the PRE-discounted amount. Granted they do not tip in the UK and other European countries because #1... their servers are paid a decent wage that is competitive with any other business / industry and "gratuities " are built into the total price of the meal. In South American countries a gratuity is automatically added to EVERY tab and you are still expected to "tip" above and beyond that as well.

I think all of you big mouths should keep them shut until you've been in the shoes of someone whose livelihood depends on the generosity of others and who is dedicated to their PROFESSION... and YES>... SERVICE is a PROFESSION. There are plenty of college educated service professionals and the amount of money you can make depends on how much you put into your job just like anything else.
