Hollywood Cheapskates and Tightwads

So our spies at a few Hollywood restaurants have weighed in on celeb tippers and gyppers. And the verdict is in.

We're told the worst celeb tippers at STK are two of the richest folk in town -- the Beckhams. We're told a restaurant once comped David and Victoria, and guess how much they left by way of tip? Nada.

On the other end of the spectrum, Ryan Seacrest is off the charts, once leaving five hundred dollars on a one hundred dollar tab. He's either a really nice guy or he just sucks at math.

UPDATE: The owner of STK tells us that our spy is wrong, the Beckhams are "great customers and excellent tippers."

61. 48. Tipping is a U.S. custom, while the vast majority of the world does not tip. While people here in the states think it's the proper and right thing to do, we are actually in the MINORITY, so think about that for a moment self-righteous tippers! All this public service sector talk is ridiculous. Tipping was probably started by some rich person in the past and it trickled down to the common person, now the common person is obligated to tip when they walk into a restaurant because of what some wealthy pip pip people did. If people would never had started tipping "people in public service" they would be paid normally. Who tips the garbage man? Who tips the street cleaners? Who tips the janitors? They are public service, but who tips them??? They get paid low wages too, but don't beg for money like waiters, valet, bell boys, etc. I guess we are only supposed to tip people who bring us a plate of food, but not the people who actually clean our streets and buildings and do the dirty work. If you think I am cheap, tight, and lame, damn right I am, thank you very much, and I don't give people my hard earned money either. Seen the movie Reservoir Dogs? I am Mr. Pink! Screw tipping!

62. To all you Dummies; In Europe the wait staff earns minumun wage, like 9 euros an hour; which equals around $12hr.
So, Europeans do not tip. But in America, the wait staff is paid about $2.50 and hour. They are expected to earn their living on tips. They work for tips. That is how the system is arranged in America. If you do not know this, you have been sleeping under a rock.

63. For all those waiters and waitresses arguing that they only make a stipend remember this: YOU accepted the job for the wage offered you. Nobody owes you anything and nobody should feel sorry for you because you accepted a low paying job. If the wage was too little you should have refused the offer and gotten another job. Don’t put the onus of financially supporting you on the customer who already pays a huge mark up for the food. Keep your contribution in perspective. You do not take the financial risk in operating a restaurant, nor do you cook the food that gets people to return. You don’t clean the tables and floors so the establishment can maintain an “A” rating. You shuttle plates of food from the kitchen to the table and act as the go between for the customer and chef. Arguing that a person should stay home or go to McDonalds if they don’t want to give 15% or more on top of an already inflated bill simply demonstrates your lack of appreciation. Be grateful to those that give anything and not bitter that you didn’t get what you felt you deserved. If a person doesn’t tip you be thankful that others did.

Damon that shows that u know diddly squat about the restaurant industry. I DO HAVE TO CLEAN THE FLOOR AND BUS EVERY SINGLE TABLE SO I CAN TURN IT OVER AGAIN. I MAKE PRETTY GOOD MONEY AND WHY? CUS THE PEOPLE HERE IN TEXAS ARE GENEROUS. I DON'T NEED ANOTHER JOB TO MAKE GOOD MONEY. AND THE ONES THAT DON'T TIP ARE IGNORANT AND RUDE!!! SO KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT IF U DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT!!!!

65. I would hope this disgusting show will correct themselves on bashing beckham's tipping. Tipping isn't custom in the US as others have posted. So get it right and stop bringing up crap to make a story for your advertisers. Anyone interested in doing a cop off show and only on the people who work for TMZ?

Anyone?

66. "mary", you so eloquently prove my point. Thank you.

67. If you cant "afford" the tip, you shouldnt eat out. Losers

68. No one should be forced to tip. If you want to leave a tip feel free to do so but don't put a gun to someones head and make them.

69. Tipping pisses me off. If the service was "so so", the staff "expects" a tip. Yeah, wait staff get paid crap, but, it isn't like you are being FORCED to be a waiter/waitress/server. If you are going to school, then find a diff job. I wish tipping were for ABOVE
average service, not for so so service. If I get poor service I do TWO things. I leave two pennies on the table, then find the manager and tell him/her to explain the custom of two cents to the wait staff, since they probably don't understand it.

70. Seriously guys, wake up. This is for all the people who are saying maybe they didnt know, they're from the UK. They know! They were just bein cheap. And for Sherry "8. their meal was comped.. a $0 bill equals a $0 tip, i don't see what the whole fuss is about that they didn't tip.."

Posted at 3:01PM on Jun 10th 2008 by sherry
You are crazy and have obviously never served before. Just because they threw a hissy fit so they didnt have to pay the bill does not mean their server didnt work. They should tip MORE because they pay for it! Their server still took care of them and got them whatever they needed. People that think they shouldnt tip if their bill is comped are CHEAP AND OUT OF LINE!

71. The most succesful people tip very well.

72. Nobody has the right to tip those lazy waiters who don't serve you well. I gave up tipping when I starting noticing my drinks weren't being refilled, my food was warm at best (by sitting to long under heat lamps), not getting extra napkins, not recieving water when I first sit down, having dirty utensils etc., you name it the list goes on. If those items were accessible, I'd get up and grab them instead of waiting for a waiter who dissapears to the back. And for the "mary" person, thanks for letting us know that S.A. requires people to tip, that way I can skip your town if I'm in Texas. Tipping can kiss my a$$.

73. Common Misconception: The tip a server receives is a direct reflection of the service that he or she has provided.

While this is what the idea behind a tip is, in reality this is almost never the case. As you can see by some of the previous comments, some people tip well, some extravagantly, and some people just don't tip at all. Being a server for the past 6 years, I've realized that the tip I receive is more of a reflection of my customers, NOT my service. Classy people tip well, people with no class don't. I work in a fine dining NYC restaurant and I'm expected to provide exceptional service to all my tables, and I do. Otherwise I lose my job. But my tips- sometimes 20%, 15%, 40% 0% and so on. This is because while most of our clientele are classy respectable human beings, we do get the occasional lowlife or even worse- European. If I get a crappy tip on a table, it's not because I gave crappy service, it's because I had crappy customers.

The reason why servers in the U.S. get paid below minimum wage, and why the service industry is the ONLY profession in the U.S. that has a lower minimum wage, is because it is a CUSTOM in America to tip your server, and the government assumes that along with gratuity, a server will surpass the minimum wage set for other professions. The notion that a customer is being forced to tip because a server gets paid very little by their employer is just untrue. A tip is expected because you are being provided with service in addition to the food you are buying. Someone is pouring you drinks, serving you food, and getting you whatever you need without you ever getting off your butt. That is what DINING OUT is all about. If you can't afford to pay for service, then EAT AT HOME. If you can afford to pay for service but refuse to, well, you're a lowlife, and I can guarantee that some server along the way has put their pecker in your soup.

And for you Euros who try to play dumb, I'll call you out for not leaving a tip right at the table. You know what the custom is. Don't pull that "We don't tip in our country so I didn't know" crap. You don't mind offending me, so I don't mind offending you and telling you that you left an unacceptable tip in front of other customers. I don't care if you don't come back, and the restaurant I work in doesn't either.

74. Wait staff should be paid no more or less than McDonald's workers. They don't do anything special but can make more money than teachers. Plus a lot of them just suck. To you servers in here getting all uppity trying to defend your position: you are merely a McDonald's worker in a different setting lol.

75. What is even WORSE is tipping a bartender just because he fills your glass with alcohol or opens a bottle of beer for you by twisting a freakin cap off. The same alcohol that might later claim the life of a person because he or she was involved in a fatal accident because of drunk driving or be convicted of a DUI.
