Hollywood Cheapskates and Tightwads

So our spies at a few Hollywood restaurants have weighed in on celeb tippers and gyppers. And the verdict is in.

We're told the worst celeb tippers at STK are two of the richest folk in town -- the Beckhams. We're told a restaurant once comped David and Victoria, and guess how much they left by way of tip? Nada.

On the other end of the spectrum, Ryan Seacrest is off the charts, once leaving five hundred dollars on a one hundred dollar tab. He's either a really nice guy or he just sucks at math.

UPDATE: The owner of STK tells us that our spy is wrong, the Beckhams are "great customers and excellent tippers."

77. where in canada is the tip included? Maybe SOME restaurants but the vast majority do not include tip in their bills at least not in the eastern part of Canada which is where I live and have travelled. And yes a tip should be left according to the quality of the service. If you serve me well then it is my pleasure to leave you a 15 percent tip if you do not then I leave you a 10%

80. In the UK, the gratuity is included in the meal so maybe they are thinking it's the same here....someone should clue them in.

82. All this nonsense from "Michael" about how stupid this country is for having to be "obliged" to tip has me thinking perhaps he should move and find another country more to his suiting.

It comes down to this, whether you like it or not, is it good form, and only fair to the waiter or waitress to leave a "gratuity" if you take yourself to a nice restaurant and get good service. Micheal (unlike myself) probably does not appreciate the extra quality of staffing and service that you will get (hopefully) at a fine dining establishment and leave an appropriate gratuity. If you can't afford to follow the standard, then put your fat ass into a drive through at "In and Out" and eat in your car. I don't always leave
20%. Sometimes 15% or less if the service really sucks. If I leave %20 the next time I come back the service is better. People get to know you, and quite frankly it does make a difference if you really like a place and want to be 'remembered'.

Michael probably gets bad service, doesn't leave a good tip, and even at the best of restaurants, if this is what he does, people probably dread seeing him (although he may think they can't wait to see him again). They probably do minimal service because they know even if they bust their butts for him, it won't make a difference. But then Michael is probably a fan of the Reagan Inspired "Trickle Down" theory, which George Bush was. And you can see how well that has served our society.

Maybe Micheal HAS a point and we should just start including the tip in the bill like Europe does and remove all doubt about it. Then he won't have a 'stupid country' custom to complain about because we're at par with everyone else.

89. To SuperStarSteve

Wow! You have surmised all that about me based on several posts I made expressing my belief and opinion. Apparently I get crappy service by people who dread the sight of me (although I am deluded into thinking the opposite). I don’t appreciate good service and have a fat ass. I am also a Regan Republican (although I have no idea what 80’s era economic policy has to do with this discussion).

You were right about something: I do live in California. In-and-out is a principally a Southern California eatery unknown to most of the rest of the country, so in referencing it, you correctly assumed I would get the reference. That or you are so egocentric you assumed if you knew what In-and-Out is, everybody would too.

You, on the other hand, are quite the fellow. Only 15% for service that really sucks? You sure show them not to mess with you!

This good form, as you put it, is based on American social mores which I am rightfully calling into question. I am not blindly accepting this tradition because I was taught to accept it like many others do. Instead I’m questioning it. Why do wait-staff in high-end restaurants get 4-5 times more in tips then medium range restaurant servers do? Do they work harder? If so, 4-5 times harder? Do lower-end restaurant servers pay less attention to the customer or carry plates that are lighter (isn’t paying too much attention annoying anyway)? What really is the value of the service provided by waiters? Is it really worth $30 an hour if my meal is $200 (remembering that a waiter does not serve only one table at a time)? If a nice restaurant is measured by the quality of the food and expertise of the chef, should the person taking my order and delivering my food really reap the rewards of the chef’s ability or the restaurant’s reputation? Isn’t giving financial praise to the server a little misplaced? Should I really feel responsible for the financial wellbeing of a class of people that agreed to work for their low hourly wage instead of demanding more? Would that apply to any other area of employment? And by accepting responsibility for another’s poor employment choices am I not just rewarding reckless and irresponsible behavior? Am I not an enabler?
