NBC News Delayed Russert Announcement

NBC News waited almost 15 minutes to report the death of its colleague Tim Russert, mostly because his wife and son are on vacation in Italy.

The NY Times reported the story on their website at 3:23 PM ET. NBC didn't break in to make the announcement until 3:39 PM.

NBC sources tell us they delayed because they could not reach his family overseas. They were on the trip to celebrate his son Luke's graduation.

NBC tapped veteran anchor Tom Brokaw -- a close friend of Russert's -- to make the announcement.

16. I am just so sad to hear about this. My prayers go to his wife and son.
Why would you even give a second thought about NBC delaying the announcement?
It was the proper thing to do.

17. He died while loving his wife, son, father, family, friends and his job. He was a very lucky man, as were those who knew him. I know they will miss him terribly, as will I. This is a very sad day for those who he left behind.

18. What, you're trying to turn this into a scandal about delayed reporting? TMZ's attempts to turn tragedy into excitement sucks.

19. to comment #7

of course you wouldn't sign your real name-you're a closeted , disgusting idiot!!!!!

hearing of the loss of Mr Russert on CNN a short while ago, I find myself now feeling as if I had lost a friend.

Not only was he a great journalist, he was a gentleman and with his books he touched our hearts and made us feel as though we knew him personally.

My heart and prayers go out to his loving family and dear friends and remarkable co-workers -if I feel this sad and shocked, I can only imagine the loss that they are beginning to feel.

He was a wonderful ambassador from Buffalo as well--I'm sure that his Sunday morning "go Bills" will be missed.
I still remember him holding up his box of Flutie Flakes!

He made me smile and he made me think-rare combination for a journalist

Meet the Press will continue but it will never be the same. I miss him already.............

21. #17 - I would watch what you say. The Grim Reaper is coming for you. See you in hell.

RIP to Tim Russert. Always enjoyed his commentary.

22. 8. TMZ the article reads to might like it was a bad thing that they waited to report the news. Any respectful person whether its an employer or not would wait until the family is notified.

==========
Yes, but would NBC have the same courtesy of waiting until the next of kin is notified, if it were someone who was not working for NBC?

That is the question that needs to be asked.

25. I am filled with great sadness for his family. He loved his job, and did it well. He will be sorely missed, and once again TV news loses another great newscaster. Peace be with your family, and Tim.........I know the gates of heaven opened for you today, and a voice was heard saying "Welcome home, Tim, we need you here." And for the rest of us left behind, nothing is forever, and time is short.......Don't waste it.

26. I am so sorry for this loss of a great man and a great political analyst. I was looking forward to his insights this election. I really respected his opinions and he always seemed like such a standup kind of guy. My prayers are with is family at this time. He will be truly missed.

27. Hey, #17, you're probably a fat slob who is obviously amazingly illiterate! Go back to to school and learn something instead of sitting on the couch in front of the TV all day swilling beer and posting nasty comments about someone who was far more accomplished than you can ever hope to be. Too bad it wasn't you who died instead of Tim. I think the world could do with less of your type and more of Tim's. Go suck it.

28. How sad that Tim won't be around to see the end of an election that he was so excited about. He'll be missed.

29. He and I started our careers in journalism together. Despite being a democrat, he was the lonely island of conservative reason in NBC's pro-socialism/communism ocean.

30. commentaries # 7, 17, 19 and the like---made by disrespective, ignorant, people who never sign their names because they don't show their true colours to the world-they are two-faced bigots who maybe have never lost a loved one or they wouldn't make comments like they do. They want attention at someone else's cost.

I pray that when they lose someone close they learn the value and dignity of life.

..and if they have lost a loved one, I pity the family and other people around them
they know not what the words "shame" or "honor" are.

I can only hope that Mr Russert's son and others do not turn to this site to read the comments, condolances and thoughts about their father's sudden passing-posts like that will tear at their heart and soul
