NBC News Delayed Russert Announcement

NBC News waited almost 15 minutes to report the death of its colleague Tim Russert, mostly because his wife and son are on vacation in Italy.

The NY Times reported the story on their website at 3:23 PM ET. NBC didn't break in to make the announcement until 3:39 PM.

NBC sources tell us they delayed because they could not reach his family overseas. They were on the trip to celebrate his son Luke's graduation.

NBC tapped veteran anchor Tom Brokaw -- a close friend of Russert's -- to make the announcement.

33. How ironic that he should pass today, just before Fathers Day. His love for his own father and the incredible love for his son and the bond between all 3 of them. My heart goes out to his wife, son and father.

36. I think it's sad only because it was so shocking. As usual everyone will make him bigger than he was. It's sad that a son lost a father, a wife lost a husband and his parents a son but let's remember this happens everyday to hundreds of people and it just goes to show that even Tim Russert wasn't immune to bad genes and poor health. Let's put this in it's proper perspective please!

43. You exhibit very little class with this story angle. The story should be the loss of an extraordinary journalist. What is noteworthy is how the media in general believe that it is better to be first than tasteful. Of course NBC waited until they could contact his family. The story angle could be "why did the NYT feel it was so important to be first?"
Tim Russert extraordinary journalist; TMZ and NYT definitely not.

44. Why would you even run a story about the network waiting to inform the family before blasting it til the media. Harvey you suck, your staff sucks, your family should have been killed so you would never have been born. You need to take down this thread, it is in bad taste
