NBC News Delayed Russert Announcement

NBC News waited almost 15 minutes to report the death of its colleague Tim Russert, mostly because his wife and son are on vacation in Italy.

The NY Times reported the story on their website at 3:23 PM ET. NBC didn't break in to make the announcement until 3:39 PM.

NBC sources tell us they delayed because they could not reach his family overseas. They were on the trip to celebrate his son Luke's graduation.

NBC tapped veteran anchor Tom Brokaw -- a close friend of Russert's -- to make the announcement.

61. This is such sad and shocking news. My husband and I were faithful watchers of Meet the Press and valued Tim's opinions. My husband said he feels like he's just lost a good friend. I'm sure he's not the only who feels that way.

65. People take note, none of us ever know when or where it is going to be our time to go. When I heard the news I thought, "Wonder how glad he was that he worked so hard, and I bet he wished that he had spent more time with his family." And then to hear his family was in Italy on vacation without him.................sad. I am sure he was a great dad and a good man - but people take note. Your time with your loved ones is what's important. - God Speed, Tim.

66. Colleague and former NBC anchor Tom Brokaw broke the news on the network Friday shortly after 3:40 p.m., saying Russert had just returned from a family vacation in Italy to celebrate the graduation of his son, Luke, from Boston College.

67. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues. He was a man of grace and intelligence who was so clearly respected by all who worked with him and appeared on his shows. I have watched some of the coverage today on MSNBC. It is very clear to me why they delayed the news. It is because he was such a family man (having just returned from a trip that his family is still on) that they made sure that they knew before we all did. That is the right thing to do. I do hope that you will treat this story with a little more respect.

72.
Since the death of Tim Russert was first announced, most cable
channels are still reporting on it.

That makes me happy on such a sad day, because Tim deserves to have
the rest of this day dedicated to him.

My heart goes out to his wife, son, and his pa.

73. A terrible shame! When we need really good journalists and there seems to be less and less of them ....Tim Russert was a needle in a haystack. I was heartbroken when Peter Jennings died and this is just another tragedy. RIP, Tim ...you were one of the truly good ones!

74. THe family should be notified before the public. I don't believe in many on TV this day and time but Tim Russert was a class act...a family man, honest, to the point, kind but yet stern about his beliefs. The only other man I could believe and is a class act just as Mr. Russert is Tom Browkow. He may be gone but everythng about him will live on. I know I will miss him as a viewer that listened to everything he had to say. May God bless his family. He will be missed more that we even realize. I am so sad and shocked.
