NBC News Delayed Russert Announcement

NBC News waited almost 15 minutes to report the death of its colleague Tim Russert, mostly because his wife and son are on vacation in Italy.

The NY Times reported the story on their website at 3:23 PM ET. NBC didn't break in to make the announcement until 3:39 PM.

NBC sources tell us they delayed because they could not reach his family overseas. They were on the trip to celebrate his son Luke's graduation.

NBC tapped veteran anchor Tom Brokaw -- a close friend of Russert's -- to make the announcement.

76. This news is so very sad and shocking. I have watched Meet The Press religiously for 12 years. Tim had just visited the sbux support center promoting his last book only months ago and was such a great person to meet.

78. As well they should have. How shameful for the NY Times to rush the news before his wife even knew. The ultimate in disrespect for a fellow journalist. It's all about being first and who cares who you hurt to get there. Sad.

79. Tim Russert was one with a Nation - He represented something that was truly good, in just about each and every one of us.

Listen to any one of his discussions, interviews or stories - You'll understand, why.

80. The deorgatory comment about Rush Limbaugh was obivously (sp?) from your typical 'lefty'. Rush is a great American as was Tim Russert.

81. Everything that Tim Russert was, TMZ isn't.

This is so very sad. What Tim brought to us will be sorely missed, as will Tim, himself. My prayers go to his family.

82. 67. What and absolutely tasteless headline--a blatant attempt to create some sort sensationalised BS over NBC's doing what any decent human would do and notify Tim's family first.

Maybe that's the headline, "NBC News Behaves Responsibly"...

You should be ashamed of yourselves!!!

83. He was one of the good guys!! I recall an interview where he expressed his great love for his family and how proud he was of them. God Bless him and his family, friends, and those who truly knew him. The news world has lost another leader.

84. 57. Holy crap!!!
Wow... condolences to the family and friends.

(And any respectful news organization would have delayed the report)

I agree with what you are saying about respectful (and respectable) news organizations. And then we have TMZ ...

The world is a better place for having Tim Russert in it, and his passing is a sad loss to us all. Go with God, Tim. My blessings and condolences to your family.

85. To FIBiker: your comments are often in poor taste, and even though you're clearly in love with your own wit, you're incisive enough that a lot of us give you a pass.

But you have shown your true colors here today, and I have lost all respect for you.

You have just joined the growing population in the "hate-filled sociopath" category.

86. Tim Russert will be missed DEARLY! It is so sad to have someone that came into our home each day with the straight arrow point of view that he had is now gone. They CANNOT replace him, they can only "patch" something new together. He will be greatly missed! My sympathy goes out to his family and his friends. May God Truly Bless Him!

88. I always have the news on in the morning while getting ready for work. It's usually background noise, but when Tim Russert was on I sat up and paid attention. He had his thumb on the pulse of the nation's politics -- there was no better than Tim. You could also detect a genuineness in him -- he was a sincerely nice guy. He also adored his family. This is a sad day for America -- my heart goes out to his family.
