AMA: Ricki Don't Know 'Bout Birthin' No Babies

There's cancer, heart disease, AIDS, and ... did we mention cancer? But the American Medical Association has its scalpels out for that evil medical scourge -- Ricki Lake.

The AMA has issued a resolution slamming Ricki and her pet cause, midwife-aided home-birth baby delivery, as chronicled in her film The Business of Being Born. What's more, they're using Ricki as a tool to get laws passed that would mandate that the "safest setting" for birth is in the hospital ... where OB/GYNs get paid, of course.

Tori Spelling as a suspect mom, we get. But Ricki?

46. If the government can tell you that you can only have one husband/wife, and not of the same sex either, the government can tell you that its youngest citizens have a right to a safe delivery.

And to the breeding sow with a litter of seven kids - you are simply disgusting.
\ Now the government you decry will have to step in and help provide education. And who knows what else.

There is no way in hell one couple has enough hours in the day to reasonably take care of seven kids.

47. Why are people talking like midwives are these sweet, gentle caregivers who volunteer to bring your baby into a world of flowers and rainbows?

They do it for MONEY too - just like doctors do.

48. You simply do not know for sure if complications will develop. There is always the exception in normal pregnancies and you guys are playing birth roulette by staying away from hospitals.

If you can't afford a kid and do it right, use birth controls or get an abortion.

There seem to be too many posters from the backwoods of America on this site and their religious, educational, and social inadequasies are showing bigtime.

49. So a woman has a right to kill a baby but AMA doesn't want women to have the right for home births?

50. I just would not recommend it for real high risk pregnancies like mine. It also depends on the doctor too. They kept telling me to try for a natural birth after having a prior c-section, and I ruptured my uterus. That all could have been avoided if I just have another c-section. I also was 2 weeks late with a 10 pound baby. That was big mistake. My daughter is very delayed for a 5 year old.

51. the AMA sucks! they need to butt out! do your research people! i have 3 normal yet crappy deliveries in a hospital. i am now pregnant with #4 and will be giving birth at home with a midwife. the hospitals push every intervention possible which often ends with a c-section if you don't progress according the way they want you to. every woman, every labor, every baby is differant. homebirths are very safe. stop listening to what everyone else says and research it on your own.

signed,
looking foreward to a wonderful homebirth, put that in your pipe and smoke it AMA!!!

52. I MUST FIRST SAY THAT I AM NOT A DOCTOR, BUT I DO PROMOTE PROCHOICE
IN THIS MATTER. YOU MUST EDUCATE YOURSELF BEFORE MAKING RASH
STATEMENTS AGAINST HOME BIRTHS. PLEASE DO THIS BEFORE COMMENTING!

I've know many, many, many people who have had their babies at
home, and they even video-taped them, too. I think this is SO cool,
and I can't wait to home-birth baby #2. (Oh, what the hospital, the
staff, the doctors, etc. DID to me when I had my first baby -- I tell
ya', never again!) I have a relative, in pretty good condition
physically, and excellent condition mentally, and emotionally. In
other words, his elevator DOES go up to the top floor. He's almost
90 years old, and I love listening to his stories about "the good ol'
days." One time I asked him about women giving birth back then, how
they knew they were pregnant, and how they delivered. He stated that
women knew they were pregnant when they missed a few periods,
and when they didn't feel well for some time. When she went in to
labor she went about her business until "it was time", and then went
to her bedroom to deliver, and that was that. Also, there were NO
stillborns, or any other troubles in that "department."

I have never heard of a home birth going wrong, so I'm going to take
that as women are pretty certain that they CAN do it, and do
it safely. A woman DOES know her own body. I certainly do, and if,
for some odd reason, my home-birthing plan doesn't work, then I will
go to the hospital, but I will never, ever, ever let anyone in the
medical profession scare me in to having weird drugs because
(and this really happened to me the first time) the doctor had to do
his Christmas shopping so he told the nurses to slow down my
labor ... Can you believe such a thing? I could tell you more
horror-hospital stories, AND more happy home-birth deliveries, but
... TO EACH HER OWN! Obviously, if you believe that you will have
trouble, then I would have back-up assistance, or just deliver in a
hospital. Some women become very depressed after having a C-Section
because she and "doc" had a special plan on how she was to deliver,
but, remember ladies, It's not HOW you get your baby, it's that you
DO get your baby. (happy and healthy!)

Oh, Really?

53. i think it's a great idea to promote delivering your childern from home. why? because it may actually decrease malpractice insurance. think of it. if the midwife screws up or even if the midwife doesn't screw up and there's a bad outcome, will the ob-gyn be to blame? nope. who will the lawyer sue? certainly not the midwife b/c they have no money to begin with. maybe they'll sue the victim, for being stupid enough to deliver at home...that is, if she doesn't die from all the complications that will occur in the first place.

54. I am a woman who has had both hospital and home births and after being maimed in the hospital with my first child. I would never ever go back. Women are going to give birth at home whether it is legal or not.
I have had 2 beatiful VBAC's at home and will have the rest of my children at home.

55. I never thought I would bring myself to write on here, but considering I do have some experience with this particular subject…. I had a daughter 16 years ago that died in labor (in a hospital). I had a son 11 years ago that was an emergency C-section that now has complications from delivery (in a hospital). I also have an 8 year old son born with no problems (in a hospital). I personally do not see how my opinion on someone else choice of birth amounts to a hill of beans. If I had chose to have these children at home the out come may or may not have been any different. What is meant to be will be. Giving up my civil liberties because of one percent of the population can not judge right from wrong is not justifiable in my opinion. I understand that someone one here was saved because she gave birth in a hospital setting. That is wonderful; you made a very wise choice. I also applaud the women on here that had successful births at home with midwives. Why do people keep asking the gov’t to interfere in our lives? Why is it a crime to let people think for themselves? I am sorry, I don’t mean to offend anyone, but when do we as citizens draw a line? We give so much of our freedom away everyday and no one seems to notice, one day it will be to late.

57. The cesarean rates in this country are over TWICE of what the WHO recommends as safe for mothers and babies.
The US has the SECOND worst mother and infant death rates in birth in the World.
I think there is a huge problem here.

58. The AMA has no right to demand that we have our chldren in the hospital. As long as the woman has a healthy pregancy and chooses not to use drugs during labor then by all means she has the right to have her child wherever she wants. There are many women out there who are trined to be professional midwives and no when to call an EMT. Woman have been pushing babies out since the beginning of time, our bodies know what to do and when to do it WITHOUT some doctor charging us $5000.

59. Unless the pregnancy is complicated a home birth with a midwife is a safe and satisfying situation. Physicians hate midwives because they charge MUCH less for pre and post partum care and delivery than the MD's do and therefore eat into the physicians' profit. A skilled midwife knows when to move his or her patient to the hospital for s specialized higher level of care.

Don't be fooled by the MD's cries of patient safety. This is a dollar driven industry - just like most of the rest of medicine is.

Most women who have a midwife delivery swear by it.

60. hospitals and doctors create problems with normal labor and deliveries. sometimes labors and short, but more often they are long. but in a hospital if you are not progressing fast enough for you, well then you must have pitocin to speed you up! and hey lets break the bag of water early! and then lets force you to be flat on your back! the worst possible position to labor and deliver in! and then they wonder why baby doesn't react well to all the unnatural things you are doing to augment labor. nipple stimulation produces oxytocin, the NATURAL form of pitocin. why not try something natural first?? but no, that might take too long, just pump them full of drugs instead. and then if you still aren't progressing fast enough for them, they claim your labor "stalled" and rush you in for an "emergency" c-section. a major surgery. and then after that they convince you that you should never attempt a vaginal delivery again because there is a less than 1% chance you may rupture. but really it is just a whole lot more convenient for a dr to go in at 9am and perform a few sections then to be on call for a vaginal delivery, not to mention the extra money they will get for major surgeries. and lets not even get into all the nasty germs floating around hospitals. but yeah! hospitals rule! hospitals are great at dealing with births that require medical intervention, if something is wrong with mommy or baby. but they really suck at dealing with the normal, uncomplicated pregnancy.
