27. 1. DMX, album chart-wise, had the most successful start of any musical artist of any genre. His first 5 albums ( covering 1999-2004) all debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts. To date his worst studio album was # 2.

He also made millions of dollars in movies. He was making $5 million per movie 5 years ago. He has a few movies coming up, though they look like !@#$

2. DMX has always had a lot of problems, drug and otherwise. Before his first album even came out he was pretty much nuts- and a crackhead. He has been a drug addicted paranoid mentally ill person for a long time. Cocaine is a hell of a drug and I'm sure he's lost a lot of his money and any sense ( if he had any) a long time ago. He's talented but obviously screwed up.

3. As far as comparing him to "typical rappers", there are many many rappers and only one DMX. As far as success he is probably in the top 5 of all-time and #1 in mental illness/drug addiction. While many rappers probably smoke weed ( as have around 60% or more of the genera population including most white people) and have petty run ins with the law, DMX is in a whole other class. I could name a couple hundred rappers off the top of my head and very few have a criminal record, let alone being arrested every day, and very few have a Gold or Platinum album- especially not 6 like this guy has.

It's sad, and if he has ever committed and been convicted of an actual violent crime ( other than the consensual acts most white people commit and are never charged for), sure he belongs in jail.
