Surfers to Paps: Peace, Man!

Photogs and surfers reunited on Malibu beaches today -- but this time beach dwellers offered peace offerings in lieu of punches.

Malibu Sheriffs did end up asking several paps to leave the area, after they engaged in a heated discussion on public vs. private beaches. The Sheriffs on the scene cited "public safety" concerns for the removal.

16. Yes the paps are allowed to be on the public beach, however, just because its "public" doesn't mean you don't have to follow rules.

If you go to a public park, you can't pull down your pants and expose yourself just because you feel like it. if you're going to disturb the peace, or create a scene, you DON'T have the right to be there, public place or not.

The Paps cause a disturbance, they pose potential safety issues doing whatever they can to get a picture, and they break the laws to the rights of privacy, not only of the star they're trying to get, but also of people who may get caught in the photo as they walk by that may not want to be a part of the circus.

yes, it is a public beach... and the public who are there to actually enjoy what its meant to be used for, have more of a right than the paps do.

19. Seems to me the majority of the public who actually live in Malibu what you predator PAPS gone. Why can you not get that? The beach is for swimming and playing not for pervs with telephoto lenses aimed at everyone. Keep coming back to that beach and it won't be surfers kiccking your asses next time, it will be the cops.

20. mayo , the surf board must have hit you in the head too many times , you do not have a right of privacy on a public beach. Are you dumb , if its public you surrunder all privacy rights and people can take photos of you all day . thats why they have security camras on public streets , you can complain that your image is being catured . think b/4 you speak. just b/c you have an opinion doesn't mean you have to give particularly when its based in ignorance.

21. Let those fat-ass paps leave their cameras in the car and get in the water for a swim or surf and leave the locals alone, and then and only then do they have a right to be on the beach.

22. These guys are no dummies. Now that they've drawn enough attention to the situation so that the cops will be patroling the beach, they can be on their best behavior and let the cops do their work for them. Cause we all know that paps have no clue what "good behavior" means. They'll continue their usual, obnoxious, disruptive ways, and they'll be sitting in cop cars.

23. Whether it is public or not is a technicality. The paps are invading people's space and privacy and hiding behind the first amendment which was meant to cover political but the monied media can afford to hire lawyers to make it cover their money making machines. I am glad there appears to be a venue where they are not welcome and it is enforced. They are hiding behind this holier than thou act that the surfers are violent - what is more violent than hounding little kids out on a trip with their folks? That is violent.

24. .
Really glad to here that the stalkerazzi are being brought to heel.

Their behaviour warrants some new laws to protect the public from them.

I hope that Malibu is successful in implementing their planned anti-stalking*cough* I meant to say anti-paparazzi laws.

Paps suck.

25. Not only is there no expectation of privacy on a public beach [and other places], paps don't need a release even though their pursuit is more commercial than informational. I'm not a lawyer so let's go to Harvey Levin in Time Square.

P.S. This just in, unconscious dude found on Malibu beach with yellow flowers turned sideways and rammed straight up his candy ass.

26. I'm not against the paps doing their job but their not going there to film celebs. There are no celebs there only locals and the paps are harassing them and trying to turn this into a big story. I would think the cops would just call this what it is, harassment. it's not normal behavior to video a non celeb day after day. The paps are going to push this until they force laws on themselves.

27. The paps are only there to cause more trouble so TMZ can milk every penny out of this lame story and run ads in front of it. How come there are no celebs in any of these videos? Maybe because none were at the beach and the paps are now harassing the general public?

28. Yeah, poor paps. Poor TMZ. Hey, where's that story about how you lost against Troyer, and have been forced to take down your portion of the videotape?

Hmmmm, I don't see that story anywhere.

29. It's only particular paps. When TMZ has nothing to report and needs filler, they turn to public places with the public (note: celebrities are LONG gone from the scene or were never there) for "we, the poor paps" stories. Either that, or they find two guys brawling on a Saturday night outside a Hollywood club and attempt to turn it into BIG CELEBRITY NEWS.

Oh, the odor of desperation...when will they realize that the smart people are getting wise to their antics?

30. How is it not clear to some that the paps were not there to enjoy the beach, but to cause problems and seek out a fight? It's one thing to seek out a story, but it's another to seek out trying to create one that is caused by you. The sheriffs saw through this and that's why the paps were asked to leave. We end up with the surfers handing out figurative peace branches, while the paps get the boot. I do not understand what the paps were trying to prove, other than they are thugs who are desperately trying to gain power they never had. Sympathy for them is just not going to happen with the general public, but the paps are too thick headed to realize this. Not only are they turning the public against them, but if anything, it is a great way to force some sort of legislation against them. They think that the First Amendment will protect them forever. It is a gamble that will back fire and they will ultimately lose the battle. The days of free for all invasive tactics may soon be largely curtailed if not ended. There may be a desire for there services, as we are reading and seeing their work here, but the anger created will outweigh this factor if pushed enough and the tipping point is happening before us as we speak. Despite the fact that it was defeated soundly by the Supreme Court, the fact that a hand gun bill even made it to the S.C. means that such things as the right to bear arms are under the microscope too. Ponder that if you think that there is not a chance of the First Amendment being altered in a non-favorable way towards the paps. If some sort of anti-pap legislation is created, don't expect a public outcry in defense of the paps. Our rights in general are already being eroded, so what makes you think that the paps will get special treatment? Let the paps push the issue. They won't like the results! Just watch!
