Roadie Rocks Out When Bassist Passes Out

A roadie for the Gin Blossoms got the opportunity of lifetime at Summerfest this week -- when bassist Bill Leen passed out cold during the last song of their set.

We're told the band finished the song with their new bassist while Bill just laid there -- and then the roadie came back out for the encore performance of "Follow You Down."

Not that far ...

16. They still tour? Didn't someone in the band die?

17. Actually, it is well know within those close to the band that Bill has been having some serious drinking issues. The "roadie" Daryl is actually a really sick bass player who techs for the band. Daryl has actually kind of been on standby for the last several months, this is not an unexpected turn of events.

18. I think it's great to see the Gin Blossoms still selling out theater size venues. I've seen them 5 times and they always have a huge crowd. The music industry is a joke these days. People win a TV show and then someone else writes their songs and all of the sudden this person is famous. The Gin Blossoms are a REAL band. They worked to get where they are over many years, and they write their OWN songs. The people putting negative comments on here aren't worth anything. They would rather follow around people who are famous for nothing, such as Paris Hilton. I'm a fan of people who have some sort of talent. It's sad how stupid some people are. Gin Blossoms are great and it's about damn time TMZ said something about them!

19. Some of you guys are absolutely ridiculous. First off, they are
still packing any place they play. I've had the pleasure of being on
the road with them, and less than a month ago, we were playing a sold
out B.B Kings in Time Square. Obviously they are till doing
something right. Secondly, Daryl is one hell of a guy, and an
incredible musician, not just a junkie roadie. Thirdly, it had
nothing to do with drugs. It's just called very little sleep and hot
weather. Research helps my friends.

21. Thats real rock n roll, The show must go on. As far as you detractors. When these guys came on the scene in the late 80s early 90s they were a breath of fresh melodic air. The radio and clubs were clogged with flat singing , life sucks I wanna kill my mom pearl jam and a whole host of other grunge and metallica wannabes. Thanks to the Blossoms and Black Crowes for playing hook songs based on the Beatles and early 70s rock which was great and will always be great.
Plus, lesson to musician roadies, ( Daryl is a guitar tech, not a box mover) although that job has to be done to get even the greatest on the stage. Learn your bands music on as many instruments as possible. You never know when troubles comin.
I hope Daryl got union sideman scale for his cameo...... Rock on...............

22. I can't believe how judgemental some people can be. If you don't like the Gin Blossoms then that is fine. They are a great band and obviously have some staying power. Its a shame that some people can't see that. What happened to Bill Leen was unfortunate but they kept the show going. Hope he is okay.

23. Darryl Icard has been touring with the Gin Blossoms for at least a decade as their Tour Manager, not a roadie, and indeed he is a phenomenal musician in his own right. It would be no surprise that he would know every GB song they play because this is not the first time he has played bass with the band. In fact, many bands often tour with "session musicians" for this very reason.

Darryl Icard and Jesse Valenzuela also played together in a band called Low/Watts, prior to that Darryl rocked with veteran Arizona Highway Band 'Major Lingo'; as did Tim Alexander (of Primus, Fata Morgana, Laundry, Blue Man Group).

Way to go journalists, always making up the news as you go along! Next time, try studying Arizona Music History 101. The story just gets more interesting from here...
