Manson Family Member -- Should She Go Free?

Susan AtkinsManson Family member Susan Atkins should not become a free woman, at least if the L.A. County D.A. has his way.

Atkins, who has been diagnosed with brain cancer and may have only six months to live, has applied for Compassionate Release Consideration.

D.A. Steve Cooley says not good enough, noting that Atkins was front and center for the Sharon Tate murders back in '69. Atkins personally stabbed Tate, tasted her blood and used it to write "PIG" on the front door.

Cooley claims Atkins "has failed to demonstrate genuine remorse and lacks insight and understanding of the gravity of her crimes."

Atkins received the death penalty but it was commuted to life after the California death penalty was ruled unconstitutional.

The Board of Prison Terms hearing is tomorrow in Sacramento.

211. 205. Susan Atkins was NOT the person that killed Sharon Tate. I think that is worth repeating in light of the misinformation being posted on this topic. Not saying she wasn't there or excluded from the crime itself but she herself didn't killed Sharon. too many people posting misinformation on this subject from a purely emotional base not a factual one.

Exactly where did you get that one? Did you read this story at all?! Susan Atkins IS the one that stabbed Sharon Tate to death! Terrorized, taunted, and slaughtered that poor woman and her innocent unborn baby boy.
Read this, then come back.

213. The people who most often need compassion are the ones that do not deseve it. What she did to Tate and her innocent baby makes me so sad. And maybe she was brain washed. However, Atkins committed a crime and she should have to serve out her life sentence. I think that you can show someone like her compassion, like getting her treatment for cancer, but do it in jail. What she did was wrong. She was convicted and should have to serve her time. It doesn't matter how long ago the murders were. She was sentenced to life without parole. That means she should die in prison. I feel sorry for her that she chose to ruin her life the way she did, and ruin the lives of so many others in the process. But I feel the most sorrow for the families of her victims, but also her family. I know that they must be hurting too. Noone wants their loved one to turn out the way she did. But she absolutely should not be let out.

215. Tell you what, she showed no compassion for her victims, why should she feel she deserves any? And as far as her being a victim of Charlie, that is BS. Have you ever listened to this crazy person? Who still says she would do anything that Charlie asks her to do? NO WAY should she be set free!

216. Let her die in prison.
Compassion? She has no remorse for the horrendous crimes she committed, and she expects compassion? IF she is out or in, the Stae of California will be paying for her medical expemses, so what is the difference? It is up to God to forgive her and inflict punishment for her crimes. Mans law said she spends the rest of her natural life in prison it didnt say "execpt if she gets cancer or some life ending disease".
My compassion is that I didnt demand her death sentence to be reversed again. Life in prison is just that, LIFE!
And I was alive when this happened.

218. Hey she was just a young girl back then. After years in prison and they fact that she is dying I'm sure she wishes she could take back the things she did in her youth. I think Jesus would agree with that. What she did was horrible but she was under the influence of drugs. I feel sorry for anyone who has such hatred in their hearts, especially Sharon Tate's sister that they are so harden with hate

If Sharon Tate's sister would forgive she would be released from all the hate in her heart - too bad she isn't showing the love of a Christian.

219.

I feel sorry for all of you who have no compassion in your hearts - Let her go home and die with her family. She was so young and on drugs when she did this. Take all hatred out of your hearts.

OBVIOUSLY, the person who wrote the quote above has never experienced the pain that comes from having a beloved sister as well as her unborn nephew BUTCHERED as Sharon was. As far as Christian love goes, even the Bible addresses obeying the laws of the land. Susan Atkins may well have accepted Jesus as her personal Savior during her time in prison, and yes, all our sins are forgiven by Jesus' death on the Cross. HOWEVER, just because we have been forgiven of our sins, that does not pardon us from the CONSEQUENCES of those sins. HUGE difference. We all sow what we reap. What Susan did was unconscionable, not even a human act. If God has forgiven her of her sins, then I will see her in heaven. It is not my job to judge her so I am not but she brutally murdered an innocent woman and her unborn child and her consequence is to remain in prison for the rest of her life, however long or short it shall be.

221. I also read in the newspaper a few weeks ago that she is not actually INSIDE the prison walls now anyway, but in a hospital with an armed guard outside the door (that is costing the taxpayers of California a pretty handsome fortune--like several million dollars just over the past few months).

222. Soone Girl OK you are judging. I feel sorry for your hardened heart. No, I have never experienced any bad things in my life but I do know I would forgive anyone for anything. How could we not and expect Jesus to forgive us.

Hatred kills your joy.

223. The decision has already been made and Susan is not going to be able to die with her family. I have very mixed emotions concerning all of this. I feel badly for everyone involved. I am an empathetic person. I feel that this was a young girl in a cult under Manson'd control. It's been 40 years now. What harm can she do anyone now? One of her limbs has been cut off and she can barely move. What she did was very wrong and the unthinkable, but doesn't anyone have a heart and compasion? I sent her a card actually to tell her that even though she commited a terrible crime there are some people who fell badly about her lifee, and what has happened to her. I feel sorry for all involved and I'm sorry, but I feel very badly for Susan Atkins. She's still human. Maybe she is sorry and has changed after 40 years. Who are we to judge?
