L.A. city officials held a big pow-wow today about regulating the paparazzi -- and John Mayer, onetime host of TMZ TV, is on the photog's side ... sorta.
He doesn't want the paps banned -- but "legitimized" -- and even wants 'em branded with their own version of the Scarlet Letter: A white "P" affixed to license plates.

19. A white "P", huh. Does Mayer not realize that California license plates are white w/ blue lettering, thus making his proposed white "P" invisible. Hmmm.
On another note, two BLUE "P"s set in a blue triangle on California plates denotes "press photographer," which is completely different from the much-loathed Paps. Mayer is by no means originial....maybe just color blind.

Respect is lacking a lot of the time and a little classy action on the side of paps would bring amazing results. I wish the paps would ease up and give the stars space. The snapshots would be so much better.

24. Winehouse Kidd- you are a cruel person. That's so evil that you wish John would die. I love it when John is on TMZ TV and I love his music. People need to listen to Jonathan Rhys Meyers- he said that if you don't want paps following you, then don't become a celebrity and stop whining.
Yeah J.C.- I agree they should probably put a bright purple or orange P on the pap's license plate.
Mayer- I'm confused- Are you for the paps or against them? That's great that you don't want the paps banned and that you showed up at the meeting. Now what you should do is some magic and make Jen go away, I don't like her.

26. Easy fix Oscar Meyer go back to being a muscian not hanging in the the" Thiry Mile Zone" Where you know you are going to get this treatment, and if you weere honesty you love it! I have been up and down and around LA for years My dad has a house in Los Feliz I worked at the Greek, the Roxy in the Days of New Wave and punk the celebs are around if they want the attention they get it, now they fight for it. I am old enought to remember when David Bowie was in Town and dropped by the Greek to see his old pal anistashia the talent manger. Now that was a stir! The air was different and people were acting crazy he was the biggest star at that time...the Mid 80's now these jokers are famous for being idiots make about ten platinum records oscar meyer and we shall see.

28. Mayer's comments - especially the ones suggesting that the government "officialize" paparazzi work - shows a real lack of respect for one of the most basic freedoms in this country, freedom of the press.
In the United States at least, nobody has to apply for official permission to take photographs on a public street. You don't need a special license (or license plate) to work as a journalist. Granted, celebrity photographers are probably the least-respected journalists in the world and often with good reason. But who draws the line? Infringing on the rights of the paparazzi to take photographs of public figures in public settings sets a dangerous precedent for press freedom.
And yes, paparazzi sometimes break the law while doing their job. But rather than targeting them specifically, the police should enforce the existing laws - don't run red lights, don't trespass on private property, etc.
I don't need the government's permission to do my job legally. In some countries I would, but not here.

29. What Mayer should have said is that every photo these slimeball paparazzi take should require a model release and payment to the model. Further, the model-celebrity should be given a share of all profits from the photos. Beyond that, the model-celebrity MUST have right or refusal and the ability to stop publication. That right should based on subject material, and payment received.
