Richard D: Daddy Screwed Me out of "Jaws" $$$

Richard Dreyfuss is suing his father and his uncle, claiming they betrayed his trust by refusing to repay an $870,000 loan.
Read the docs
According to the suit, filed today in L.A. County Superior Court, Dreyfuss says back in 1984, daddy Norman and Uncle Gilbert had a partnership going. They allegedly went to Richard, who by then was a hugely successful and wealthy actor, and said they needed him to help "the family in a crisis." According to the suit, the crisis involved an office building the partnership owned in downtown L.A.

Richard claims he bit the bait and loaned them $870,000. He says for the next 24 years, he was jacked around. Gilbert, who is a lawyer, allegedly refused to pony up the tax returns and financial statements of the partnerships. It all came to a head in either late 2007 or early 2008, when Richard supposedly asked about repayment and Gilbert said, "You can't get it."

So it's Goodbye Dad. Richard is suing for the $870,000 loan, interest and punitive damages.

20. It's the oldest rule in the book - never loan any more money than you're wiling to lose. Sorry Richard had to learn it the hard way.

21. Richard must be broke. 1984 was a long time ago and this has been eating away at him all this time? Just write it off, the lawyers fees will use up whatever money he has left. Geez

23. One can only imagine how much that amount could have generated through proper investments--or just a few well-placed stock purchases in the '90s. But that is all water under the bridge at this point. I think Richard should bite the bullet and let it go.

25. Did anyone notice that State is spelled wrong on the papers?? So is this really TRUE??

26. Nothing tears families and friends apart as much as money. As a self-described Shakespearian actor, Richard Dryfuss should remember the following words from Polonius in "Hamlet":

"Neither a borrower nor a lender be;
For loan oft loses both itself and friend,
And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry.
This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man."

Basically, by not following this 400+ year old advice, Richard Dryfuss is a schmuck. I bet he didn’t even get any legal papers signed on the loan. An expensive lesson, “Mr. Holland”.

27. It could be that his Dad is not well, and needs expensive care, and his money is tied up by other means, so the only way he is sure to get his loan paid legally by estate is by suing,

28. he is a loser................he needs to grow up...........neither him or his Dad has to much time left on earth.
He should have taken care of his finances better

30. Richard needs the money before his house goes into foreclosure like Ed McMahons! Thats a joke! He should have drawn up a contract were they paid him in monthly or yearly installments. Sounds like he trusted his family too much. Attorneys no matter if they are family or not are all out for themselves....money,money,money. I hope Richard gets all his money back, he earned it and deserves it back!
