31. gossipking, you are totally right about the personality test. I was in college and very vulnerable when one of their recruiters came up to me and asked if I wanted a free personality test. As a college student, I was fascinated by the idea that someone could help me figure out what I should do with my life. Their test consists of a lot of leading questions that if you answer honestly make you sound crazy and helpless. According to them I was going to commit suicide within 5 years if I didn't pay them to help me.Well, of course I'm suicidal, I'm bipolar. They tend to go together. When I said no, they still tried to sell me a copy of Dianetics. I think part of the reason I'm still alive after more than 30 years is due to their test. I decided I'd be damned before I'd let their idiot test be right. I still consider suicide at times (meds only moderate, not cure) but I've learned to cope without them and their idiot cult.

Karen and gossipking, do you know the story about how Hubbard created scientology because of a bar bet he had with John W. Campbell, then editor of Analog? Campbell bet Hubbard $50 that it was impossible to create a religion so bizarre that no one would believe it. Hubbard made up scientology, lost the bet but made megabucks. And got to control lots of people's minds. I guess he actually won.

35. L Ron probably just wrote this as a mythical story or a movie script and some a*shole found it and was like, "Oh yeah. THIS is TOTALLY what I'm going to believe in!" So everyone started this big cult called scientology and L Ron has GOT to be sitting there cracking up and raking it in. Scientologist are SUCH psychos!!!! Wow. Poor Katie's family...

36. TomAndKatie=MorkAndMindyNanuNanu: No, Hubbard further refined Scientology after the bet and "proved" that auditing increased intelligence by removing the thetan influences. (I'm not sure he called it auditing yet) When independent scientists examined his results they found that the changes he claimed existed, did not. The people who went through auditing showed no changes whatsoever.
