Me Spanish, Me Play Joke...

...me slant eyes like Chinese folk.
Spanish basketball team
That's basically the apology members of the Spanish Olympic Basketball team have issued to the Chinese people after mocking their eyes in a photograph that ran in a Spanish newspaper.

In a statement, Spain's Pau Gasol -- who's also a Laker in the NBA -- said, "It was something like supposed to be funny or something but never offensive in any way. I'm sorry if anybody took it the wrong way and thought it was offensive."

But wait -- it gets better. Another Spanish player, Jose Calderon -- who also plays for the Raptors -- wrote on his blog, "We felt it was something appropriate, and that it would be interpreted as an affectionate gesture." He added, "Without a doubt, some ... press didn't see it that way." DUUUUHHHHH!!?!?!!?

Very open-mided, moron! EVERYBODY has their own sad story! You are so offensive to me because you assume only certain groups have the right to feel victimized. That is so ignorant. And what does being from the south have to do with it? Goes to show that you don't know jack and need to get to know differnet types of people before you open your trap!

YOU TELL IT!!! I am from the south as well and my friends are I are more open-minded and accepting than most! I get so sick of this stereotype. What is funny (and shows people's ignorance) is that the ones saying these things are in fact, racist and hypocritical. I guess they feel that only certain groups of people deserve respect. Makes me sick!

97. I am not a humorless person, but I respect people and know when something is inappropriate. I think it was wrong for the Spanish basketball teams, both men and women to make their eyes slanted with their fingers only because they were in China. What would happen is the olympics were played in Africa. Would they paint their faces black. People don't think about the consequences before they act.

100. Stupid Americans. You have to ventilate all the racism there is in your country by making a big deal out of this insignificant picture of the Spanish Team, you see they are not as obsessed with racism like you are, so they just don´t see this as a way of "mocking" or looking down to chinese people. I just think LA Times should apologize, along with U.S Media in general for making a stupid stupid society. Learn the ways of the world, don´t end up being the ugly americans.

101. so, it's wrong to make fun of people, but this article makes fun of the Chinese by it's example of how Chinese people talk. way to be hypocritical!

I don't think it's that big of a deal. Spain isn't bogged down by political correctness like we are here in the states.

btw, spain has a HUGE chinese population

102. It was just a joke! No more than that. I´m Spanish, my husband is Cuban and he is always laughing at my way of talking. Do I get offended by that? Of course not! I think most people in Usa have a problem with racism. Always trying to be correct. If I see a black person I´m not going to call them afroamerican or things like that, I will call them black. That´s more racist. Imagine someone calling me "milk colour". Don´t you think that´s stupid?

103. It is a European attitude.
The Europeans are always pointing at the US that we self centered and yet they forget and do not realize they hang on the the monarchy mentality, it is heavily entrenched in the culture and see no fault on their part for the racist "jesting".
You see they are so cultured they are blind but are so easy to critique the West.

104. Seriously, our American media needs to mind its own business! It's embarrassing that every time someone lays a fart somewhere in the world, the media starts nagging like an ex-wife or crazed mother-in-law. Just shut the hell up and let them deal with it!!

DAMN!

105. Depending on how one looks at it, it can be either a greeting of respect to the Chinese on the team about to arrive in Beijing, or as I and others tended to see it, non-thinking and offensive. When in doubt, just smile! But obviously, the unthinking team did not. I cannot say that it was NOT wrong like some have said. I am not in their shoes; and until I am, then I would feel as if I had the right to say that it was not offensive. However, as an African-American I have heard many stories from friends who have gone to Spain who've stated how offended they were at the incredibly racist attitudes of a lot of the Spanish over there. Not all, but an "awful lot". Also, in watching a past cycle's episode of "America's Next Top Model" when they had traveled to Spain, many have witnessed the episode where the models had to kiss a Spanish man, with the man ignorantly and insensitively stating to her face that he did not like Black women. He had the model in tears. My point is that unless you've been on the end of a racial incident, you cannot understand how hurtful it can be,and do not have the right to say that they should not be upset by it. If it offended one Chinese person, then it was wrong. As much as we think something like that is funny, it's not worth it , at the expense of so many. We have so many other things to laugh at, good people ! Wishing everyone peace and happiness!
