Oh Hell Taekwon-No!

Being a sore sport doesn't even begin to cover this one. Cuba's Angel Matos deliberately kicked a referee in the face after the ref disqualified him in a bronze-medal match today.

Matos had been hurt during his round of fighting, and he was disqualified for taking too much time to recover. Pissed off, Matos rebounded from his injury pretty quick -- whacking the ref square in the face with his foot. The World Taekwondo Federation has recommended he be banned for life.

31. I remember hearing years ago that Sasha Mitchell (Cody from the television show Step by Step) kick-boxed his wife in the face.
I wonder if he gave him lessons. Total losers.

32. This guy dosen't deserve to call himself a Martial Artist. As a Black belt myself, I feel I can say this guy is a disgrace to all forms of Martial Arts. There are tenets every martial arts has & this guy broke them all. As much as I would love to fight someone & show what I can do, I know I can never make the first move or provoke a fight. I, like many other martial artist have worked extremely hard to accomplish a goal. It seems this guy worked hard for nothing. The martial arts world took a blow because of this guy. What a jerk!

35. Ahhh! Again with the racist BS. This incident had nothing to do with this man being a "negro" and who says that anymore anyway?? He's an A-hole and they come in all colors as #'s 20 and 23 proved with those dumb comments. If you chose to accept stereotypes and be "nervous" rather than to think for yourself and get to know someone on a personal level before judging them on color then thats just you being dumb. Idiots!

36. Matos claims fight was rigged. He was to be paid off to lose.

37. Fred is some kind of retard!!! The rules give the injured party one munite to get the injury under control where he or she can continue. Fred that is 60 seconds and not 67 or 75. 1 minute or 60 seconds and NO more!! Rules are for a purpose there Freddy.

38. It doesn't matter what the ref did. There is no sport in which it is acceptable to assault a referee, EVER!. If you disagree with a call, you file a grievance as Tae Kwon Do Mom said. I've seen bad calls in every sport but arguing can get you thrown out of the game, just arguing. Actually touching the ref is unthinkable.

Go Sox

39. I don't understand how this turned into a black issue, there are idiots of every color in this world. It's obvious some of you just have a racist agenda. Aren't you late for your meeting. Don't forget your white hood.

42. He is a disgrace to his country, he is a disgrace to all Olympic Athletes . His country should be ashamed, and all Olympic athletes I am sure felt bad about this incident. He has more than disgraced the art of Tae Kwon Do, he has shamefully displayed that one of its proudest ranks BLACK BELT, cannot control themselves in the OLYMPICS. . As a practioner of martial arts and Tae Kwon Doe I apologize to anyone who watched this, I apologize on Behalf of all martial artists and I say that this in no way represents the spirit of sportsmanship of our Martial art, of Karate, or of the Olympics.

I only hope that people realize this was a rogue disturbed individual, there are bad apples in every bunch. I hope the ref is ok and I hope this turd is banned for life from the sport, and is put in prison for what he did. I am sure Cuba has their own way of dealing with athletes who embarrass their country on the world stage like this, and commit a criminal offense at the same time. Good riddance

43. This is the wikipedia entry on this issue

Ángel Valodia Matos (born December 24, 1976) is a Cuban taekwondo athlete. He received a gold medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney,[1] and added another at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro.

At the 2008 Summer Olympics, Matos lost the bronze medal match in repechage, due to expiry of Kye-shi time (medical time out). After he incurred an injury in the fight, and subsequently took a Kye-Shi, the referee ruled that he had taken too long during his time out. After the winner was declared as Arman Chilmanov of Kazakhstan, Matos kicked Swedish referee Chakir Chelbat in the face, drawing blood from the referee's mouth, and also pushed a judge and spat on the floor.

[WTF Response

A statement released by the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) referred to the incident as a "strong violation of the spirit of taekwondo and the Olympic Games", ordered all reports of his participation in these Olympics to be stricken from the records, and imposed a lifetime ban preventing him and his coach, Leudis Gonzalez, from participation in any future WTF events.

44. Banned my a-s, he should be locked up for assult with a deadly weapon. I can't believe he got away with this action. A few years in a Chinese prison might set him straight. What a disgrace to Cuba!

45. Hey Fred, rules are rules, the ref didn't make them up he just enforces them. Banned for life is nothing, he could have easily broken the refs windpipe with that kick. He got off easy.
