Harry Potter's No Indian Giver

Hari Puttar. Harry Potter. Coincidence?

In a vindaloo-ny fight only Bollywood could concoct, the creators of a new movie called "Hari Puttar: A Comedy of Terrors" are being sued by Warner Bros. because their movie arguably is too similar to the "Harry Potter" series. Here's the thing: the "Hari" people say it's just a coincidence, and Hari's a common name in India and "Puttar" is Punjabi for son.

The studio wants an injunction against the film, which is set for release in September.

31. Personally, I Think Every Single Think Sam Pointed out about Our (American) culture is True. We, as a society, hate to look in the mirror and see our own faults. We are a Very One-sided, Small-Minded, Shallow, Selfish Nation. I don't know if we have always been this way, but I definitely know that we are, right now.

32. Probably boring to anyone but linguists and comparative mythologists

Sam, while I agree with you in principle I would like to point out a few minor factual errors. Krishna is not the only source for the story which became Christ. The Celts, Romans, Greeks, Gauls, and Teutons, Europeans all, had myths about the god who died for the sake of the world and then was reborn, usually in the spring. The English word, mother, does not come from Sanskrit. Mother is the same in almost every human language because it is one of the first sounds that infants can make since it is a simple dipthong created by pressing the lips together and then opening them on an exhalation. If I were going to accept your claim that the Sanskrit word is older than the European then you might have to accept that the Chinese word for mother, ma (sorry, I'm not certain of the exact diacriticals) might be even older.
As it happens, the people of India are Indo-European and all of us speak a language based on the assumed but unprovable proto-language, which divided into the centem languages of western Europe and the satem languages of eastern Europe and Asia.

33. Forgive me if this has already been brought up. If you watch the trailer for the film, it's a lot like "Home Alone", so if anyone should be suing it should be the company that produced that film. I don't see any resemblence whatsoever to the Harry Potter films at all.

36. It's hilarious and frightening that this had to turn into a racial debate AGAIN! For such a harmless story it sure got everyone worked up and I'm not sure what the cheerleaders and child molesters comment had to do with it Sam.???? The point is is that Warner Bros., not America, is fighting for something that can be backed in a court of law. Does that mean they should, no. The Bollywood stars ( children) in the movie don't deserve the negative attention or stress just because of bunch of nerds want to defend Harry Potter's "rights". Seems ridiculous and you are ALL racist, Sam!!....Sasha is the only normal one out of this bunch...
