Cancer Society Burns Jordan Over Cigar Shots

Millions of kids still wanna be like Mike -- and according to the American Cancer Society, that's a bad thing.

The ACS is fuming over several photos TMZ posted earlier of MJ playing softball with a fat stogie hangin' out of his mouth. Now, the ACS has unleashed a mouthpiece of their own, their former president Cary Presant MD, who told us, "When high profile athletes publicly display unhealthful habits they can mislead young people to emulate their behavior. According to the American Cancer Society tobacco use in this country is responsible for 1/3 of all cancers and remains the most preventable cause of death in our society. 8.6 million Americans suffer from chronic smoking-related disease. Since 1964 smoking has cause more than 12 million premature deaths in the U.S."

Calls to Jordan's reps were not returned.

47. So it's OK for a current Presidential Candidate to smoke cigarettes, but not for an athlete that was famous 20 yrs ago to smoke cigars? Do kids even know who he is?

49. Hmmmmmmm... TMZ is over the top. If you read the quote from the ACS guy he's not bashing Jordan directly at all. I have a feeling TMZ is once again stretching the viewpoints of others.

50. Tell Cancer Society to get a life and quit targeting famous ppl to get attention! I hate smoking too, but its none of my business if its not in my house! There's not 1 kid in America thats gon smoke becuz MJ is doing it! Its becuz their parents are! More dumb ass adults will lite becuz of MJ than any kid!

51. I agree, the actual quote from the ACS person isn't bashing Jordan. TMZ is taking liberties of their own here. I've never heard of the ACS bashing an individual, but rather big tobacco as a whole.

54. Michael Jordan is as much of a role model as the newly picked Republican Vice Presidental Candidate Sarah Palin. If you are going to condemn anyone in regards to our youth, this should be the poster person. It's the ONE SIDED ADULT that has nothing else to do that is concerned about Michael Jordan smoking a cigar (that he probably don't inhale), Our youths are far more interested in what new sneakers he would be putting out next, so stop speaking for them. Your issue should be w/ Mrs Palin who's teenage daughter DRINKS ALCOHOL AND IS A PREGNANT TEEN. Palin is against abortion but as we see she is also AGAINST ABSTANCE AND BIRTH CONTROL... So if you want to protest a role model PROTEST THAT!!!!!!

Why don't you concern yourself with all of those drugs that are advertised and pushed on tv? I have counted over twenty five drugs that have been advertised over the last two years. The real drug pushers are not male Blacks standing on street corners selling drugs. We did something about the cigarette drug pushers and now it is time to go after the corporate drug pushers. Do something useful, TMZ. Jordan is no longer on the scene. He has retired. Go after the corporate drug pushers.

This was no public event, no big televised labor day ordeal - he was out kickin it wit da bois and some random pappi takes a pic and causes a splash - THEN... the ACS decides to intrude on this man's personal time with his friends and family over a holiday and tell him he is a douche for tokin a stogie - I think they need to spend more time peddling their poisonous chemotherapy drugs and finding a cure rather than picking on someone when they are "OFF DUTY" AND OFF LIMITS

60. Once again the ignorance of the vast majority of posters on TMZ astounds me. The comments talking trash about the American Cancer Society prove how stupid the people reading this site actually are. To say that Jordan (granted he's a gifted athlete) is more important then the ACS is asinine.
