Michael Phelps' Comedic Doggy Paddle

Michael Phelps' monotone comedic styling wasn't used very much on last night's season opener of Saturday Night Live -- which was probably for the best.

But when it comes to the parts where they actually let him speak ...

16. i thought he was funny. There have been really bad host in snl than phelps. Some of the skits were very funny, but only corny skit was when they repeated the Peyton Manning's skit (manning's was funny..)
overall Phelps was not bad!!

17. Melon Head,
You must come to this site to read about all of the other Nobel-prize winning people they show, right? You probably also sat there and complained about Phelps while you were watching him race in all of races during the Olympics. He is probably more of a role model than most of the pseudo-celebs on here (Shauna Sand, any reality show idiot, etc) and while he doesn't have much comedic genius, he is far from a 'douce-bag'.

21. Since guys are ALWAYS picking women apart, let me just say something about the boy here. He's not only ugly - - - he's fugly. Looks like he's gonna take off with those dumbo ears. I don't care how many medals he won, he's a dog. Please, don't try to make him out to be a hottie or a player. Ain't happenin'.

24. He wasn't bad. Now Tom Brady... the Falafel sketch still makes me shiver.

25. It wasn't just Michael Phelps which made the show unfunny. Michael tried his best and didn't seem to drop his lines or go out of character during his skits, but the show itself was just SOOOO bad. The only highlight was Tina Fey's Sarah Palin ompersonation at the start of the show with Amy Poehler's Hillar Clinton. The other skits were either mediocre or bad (repeating the Peyton Manning/coach skit, WHY?; the Pizzeria Uno skit which was bad).

26. #8, melonhead, very well said. Its retarded that is ugly douche is considered a hero just because he won some awards for swimming well. Big deal. Like you said, its not like he cured cancer or anything.

28. Historically, the Olympians have NOT been good performers on SNL (trust me, Nancy Kerrigan was AWFUL when she was on many years ago,) but they are not trained thespians, they are atheletes--we shouldn't expect them to do well, just be the butt of a few jokes and leave the good acting to the professionals.

I thought he was cute, especially during that T-Mobile skit!!!

29. Hold your horses, jealous people. We're talking about 14-times-olympic-champion here. Phelps doesn't need to prove anything to anyone-at 23,he's a legend already. SNL and NBC needed him to improve ratings and he did them a favour (again). It was a poorly written TV show, not sure the best actors in business could save it, let alone an athlete. Kudos for being brave and down-to-earth, Mike.

30. He wasn't very good, but so what. The show, in general, is almost laughably bad (except for the political spoofs, like yesterday's Tina Fey opener). I have seen every SNL since 1975 (yes, I'm old), but about 20 years ago, I started recording it, and watching the decent material in fast foward... that usually consists of the pre-credit opener, sometimes the host's monologue, parts of the news (where there is no guest sitting there doing un-funny stuff), and - rarely - the musical guest. It usually takes me 20 minutes to "watch" the 90-minute show. This being the season opener, you'd think they would have come up with some good material over the Summer, but nope, nothing. Really quite sad.

(P.S. We should cut Phelps some slack; if you Google "Phelps Aspergers", there are some professionals out there who think he has Aperger's syndrome, a mild form of autism that results in a flat affect (way of speaking), and - often - a super-human focus that allows them to excel in one area, either physical or mental. Sound familiar?)
