Bret Puts Brakes on "Rock" After Deadly Crash

Bret Michaels is temporarily pulling the plug on his upcoming reality show "Rock of Love Bus" to reach out to the families of two women killed in a car accident caused by a "Rock" roadie.

In a statement issued by his people at VH1, Michaels has "requested that his participation in the production ... be temporarily suspended" as he tries to "reach out" to the families of teenagers Yasmin Jackson and Kevetta Davis. They were killed Friday on I-57 in Illinois when Dennis Hernandez, a crew member from the "Rock" production outfit, fell asleep at the wheel of a truck, crossed the median and hit two cars. Dennis was on his way to the next "Rock of Love" shooting location. He was charged for the crash.

Reps for VH1 stress Hernandez wasn't an "associate of Bret Michaels or part of his tour staff."

Here's VH1's statement in full:

A crew member from the 51 Minds Entertainment production of the upcoming 'Rock Of Love Bus' series on VH1 was involved in an auto accident on Interstate 57 in southern Illinois on Friday afternoon. The crew member, who is not an associate of Bret Michaels or part of his tour staff, was traveling alone to the next location stop for the series. The accident resulted in two fatalities in one car and injuries to two passengers in another vehicle. The crew member survived and has been released from the hospital. Local authorities continue to investigate.

Bret Michaels has requested that his participation in the production of the series be temporarily suspended in deepest sympathy as he attempts to reach out to the families of the victims. Traveling separately, Mr. Michaels had left Illinois early Friday morning and was not near the scene of the accident.

Michaels, 51 Minds Entertainment and VH1 extend their deepest sympathies to everyone involved in this terrible accident.

"As a father of two, I cannot even imagine what the families must be going through at this time. I will make every attempt to reach out to them to let them know that my heart and prayers are with them during their time of grief," said Michaels in a statement.

17. The Chicago Tribune reported today that Bret Michaels did not in fact reach out to the families of the women the driver killed. Another self-absorbed idiot. I can't stand that guy even more than I couldn't stand him before. Loser.

18. i watched rock of love just for the sociology of it. i could pick out who he was going to elimanate so the ones that stayed had a better chance of causing trouble. thats why lacey stayed on so long. but bret now almost 52, and i kept wondering why do they go and eat everytime bret turns around he is taking the girls to eat. i was thinking he was a diabetic and i thought no he can't be because he drinks like a fish, and diabetics know you cannot drink period. then with one of the girls that he took to the beach and they were riding the dune buggy and he got sick. well his sugar dropped bad. and he grabbed his sugar kit out and checked it you got a very quick glimpse of it and he says lets go eat. and i kept thinking with the partying and it was disgustingly sodom and gomorah, i knew that something was going to stop him, because it is not pleasing to God and it is horrible that man fell asleep and crossed the hightway and hit those 2 girls. bret said he was going to temporarily suspend filming, well we all know what that means he will stop for a few weeks and then start back up and have rock of love 3. bret, if you put all the energy you have for sinning,, and put it in the other direction for the Lord Jesus Christ, you would be a great witness for the Lord. you're going to have to stand in front of the Lord on Judgement Day and account for everything you have done and if you haven't been saved and baptised in the Name of the Lord, you will have to accept the consequences and the Bible says all liars and fornicators will be thrown into the Lake of Fire. maybe satan will let you film rock of fire 1 "the debauchery"

19. Well you added all of your two cents and here is mine. Bret Michaels is a class act. He spent two hours last week outside a lens crafters in spfld IL taking pictures signing autographs and talking to fans. The production co. hired a driver with a suspended license, not Bret, his name is on the show he is the talent but he is not the one hiring and firing. From what I have seen at an after party he sponsored last month in spfld, I can tell you first hand he is a genuinely nice man, he stayed hours longer than he was supposed to to make sure everyone got their autographs and pics. He took more time to take pics with the band that played that party and their wives and he didn't rush them or use an excuse to get to the tour bus to leave. He talked to them and even apologized for not being able to play with them on the stage. I can completely understand why he hasn't contacted the families yet, reaching out to someone after a tragedy like this does not mean calling them within hours and unless I am completely wrong it probably won't make the paper when he does. Considering he's a parent he can completely understand the magnitude of the grief these families are dealing with. So call him what you will but if you haven't dealt with this man then you really aren't commenting with any insight just with your own prejudice.

20. he should of put on a suit and took his own girls to the funeral of the young girls that were killed. but he is an self absorbed party boozing sex crezed fornicator that has no respect for himself or his children. i think it would be safe to say that bret's attorney has told him not to. bret, if you like to watch movies, why don't you watch the movie escape from hell. i think you would be a changed man.

21. i think bret should have put on a suit and took his daughters to the funeral of those two young girls. how would you feel bret if a car load of drunks were doing 100 moh and your daughter were coming home from cheerleader practice and they hit them and your girls were instantly killed and your children's mother was in critical condition? how would you feel if the family of the car load of drunks that were killed didn't even contact you in anyway to say im sorry i hope your children's mother recovers, is there anything i can do? this means so much at a tragedy at this time. and i think that bret needs to watch the john hagee movie, Escape from Hell. he will be a changed man after he watches it. bret, these are the end times. Jesus is coming back any second and you are not prepared. when the Rapture happens you are going to suffer the most horrible things steven king never come up with. everyone will that is left on eartn. please don't be left behind.

22. I think that the families will decide to sue michaels even if it is not his fault. He was on his way to go to work for him. The people will sue whomever has the most money.

23. what a horrible thing to happen.... i am glad to see Mr Michaels doing the right thing...... there is a new product that came out this year for people who drive for a living.... its a gadget that you place in your ear and the moment that your head moves forward from falling asleep a high pitch alarm goes off and wakes you up...... nothing can bring those teens back.......i feel for the families .......... i hope that someone can make a law that requires truck drivers to use these devices ........a lot of transportation companies place their drivers under heavy work schedules and a lot suffer from lack of sleep...... more needs to be done thorugh congress to really monitor this industry.

24. Man, this guy is a has been... Brett, the 80's left a long time ago. Just thought you'd like to know. Any chick who would want to go out with someone like him is obviuosly a fame-whore, or a douche to boot.

25. Not having all the facts, my guess is: Non Union Driver. No required turn around time. This is why there are union drivers. WIth the amount of PA's driving on non union reality shows this was bound to happen. My heart goes out to the families of the deceased, injured and the driver himself. Reality shows need a reality check. They are notorious for overworking and under paying their crews. These show make mega bucks on low budgets. Greed kills. It's time for a change.

26. Baloney! I live in Nashville where Bret and his reality show just performed at the Wild Horse Saloon on 2nd. Ave., downtown Nashville on Monday night. He had a closed set and we in the invited audience during the taping segments that night never heard a damn thing mentioned about the accident the day before.

Sorry, I like Poisons music, I also remain a fan of Bret for the music. But as far as a person of character? Or this latest cover-up in an effort to combat the real criticisms he and his image are faced with today?

Pffft. No way. If he was on fire on the side of the road I wouldn't piss on him to put out the flames.

Quoted to add the article from our local paper, The Tennessean. Even in Music City, Bret failed to garner much respect in positive comments. Even this publication shoved this tragic accident under the rug.

http://www.tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080929/TUNEIN/80929019

All of this publicity is crap from his camp in an effort to cover his sorry self. Two girls dead and others in hospital, yet he goes on with the show only to backpeddle after the heat rises and he needs to say he's putting everything on hold.

Yeah, right Bret. You're cheap chittlin's. Your values, your women, your life, your management, all reflect you. The fact you continue with it only says you agree with it. No matter how wrong.

28. Just goes to show Bret Michaels is a REALLY very caring person even though he wasn't in the accident at all!!!

29. All you people dissing on Bret and the show need to get a clue. Whether or not it's his name on the show or not, whether or not the show has an unrealistic schedule or not, the truck driver is the only person truly at fault in a case like this. It's no different than any of the hundreds of thousands of other trucks out there on our roads every day. I've seen plenty of trucks wreck that had no connection to a reality show. Just becasue he happens to be the headliner for the reality show, he should not be blamed whatsoever for the carelessness of the man who stepped behind the wheel of a big-rig and fell asleep. Hell, I've come close to falling asleep on much shorter drives than what he was setting out for and all I drive is an SUV. The difference is that no matter what, I KNOW when I'm at that critical point and pull over for fresh air, caffein and more sugar.
One more point: Unless Bret is a partial ownner of the production company, he's just another employee of the company, just like the truck driver was.... How would you like it if a truck driver hauling goods for whatever company YOU work for killed 2 girls and the rest of the world turned on YOU for it because you work for the same company?
I like the man's music but I have the utmost respect for the fact that while he has no obligation whether monetary or moral to engage in reaching out to the families, it is clear that he is being the bigger man and doing so of his own accord and no doubt on his own time and dime. If anything he should be commended for how he's handling a situation that in reality has nothing to do with him personally anyway!

30. i went 2 school with these 2 girls and its really sad. the memorial that we had at our apartment complex was tear-jerking. kevetta came 2 SIU from STL on the train with no one...she had no one... not even her parents. She came back to dance with Fatal Fusion and to get her education, and she appreciated life. I do not know too much about Yasmin, but I know that they did not deserve to die at the hands of a sleeping truck driver. This is why I HATE driving with trucks on the expressway...they always cut you off (on purpose) and I am tired of hearing about them sleeping at the wheel. HE SHOULD BE CHARGED WITH VEHICULAR MANSLAUGHTER AS WELL AS THE MANY OTHER DRIVERS OUT THERE WHO PUT EVERYONE ELSES SAFETY AT RISK!
