You could see the fear in her frightened doe eyes -- the exact moment Britney Spears decided a trip to a NY jewelry store was too insane for her to handle.

The crazy scene went down in Soho just moments ago, as Britney took all of 5 steps outside her SUV, when an army of paparazzi and overzealous fans overpowered her five-man security squad. She turned, she froze, she ran back into the car, and finally -- she got the hell out of there.

23. Wow, this confirms to me that Britney is truly a phenomenon ... I work in NYC and pass celebs all the time (ok, that that much) but when a celeb is around they are usually ignored other than a second glance but never mobbed by the paps and bystanders. I go to a certain Yankee hangout b/c I like to see them but they are "almost" never bothered ... now and then an autograph is politely asked for. Britney is amazing ... people (britards and haters alike) can't get enough of her. I actually feel ashamed that she was treated that way in NYC ... but it just goes to show what a persona she is.
