Oprah's Mom -- I Can't Read the Small Print!

Oprah Winfrey's mom is refusing to pay back a $155K bill to a clothing store, and her defense is basically to play dumb.

Vernita Lee claims she shouldn't have to pay the gigantic bill to Valentina, a boutique in Wisconsin, because they took advantage of her "lack of knowledge ... and/or capacity" when they opened the account, reports the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. What's more, her lawyer says the store didn't disclose finance charges prominently enough.

And to think, this could all go away with the change lying around Oprah's chintz-covered cushions.

92. and I agree also with the person that said Oprah's mom shouldn't even have to have credit. Good grief, Oprah makes a billion a year? Who on here would have their mother buying things on credit, especially if she can't afford it, if they made a billion in their lifetime much less in a year? Even a bad mother should be at least a millionaire!

93. ONCE A HO, ALWAYS A HO! YOU CAN TAKE THE BITCH OUT OF THE HOOD BUT YOU CAN'T TAKE THE HOOD OUT OF THE BITCH - SEND HER FAT ASS TO AFRICA TO WORK IN OPRA'S SCHOOL TO PAY OFF HER DEBT!

94. for some reason i only remember oprah ever talking about her father.
secondly we don't know what kind of relationship oprah has with her mom, They may not be on speaking terms. a lot of times when you have a lot of money family tries to manipulate and use you.
oprah did not run up a bill her mother did...and her mother should pay it.

95. There must be a lot more to this story, I doubt very much it has to do with the woman "living beyond her means" or being irresponsible. Oprah's relationship with her mom is fine - she's wanted her mom (now in her seventies) to move in with her or at least accept a live-in companion or other assistance. Her mother has various serious physical problems, can hardly see, and really shouldn't be living on her own now for various reasons, but refuses to move into an assisted living situation or to live with her daughter (very independent person, it seems).

I don't have any confirmation and so this is pure speculation, but there also could be the beginnings of some kind of dementia if there is anything to this story at all. My aunt's problems with Alzheimer's started about that age. If that's the case, she easily could have been taken advantage of by a salesperson eager to make a big commission or anybody at the store who was less than honest and saw a chance to get money out of Oprah. I've seen it happen on lesser scales with elderly people, especially in phone scams. They live alone, no one to act as a check on impulsive actions, they're too trusting. In this case, a crook associated with the store may have charged her for things she didn't actually buy. There is no reason to believe that Oprah would just leave her mom hanging on this if she had actually bought the stuff. I would suggest postponing judgment on it until the full facts are available.

96. Candie..well said. Clinton & Oscama {Acorn} both were instrumental in the fannie mae-- freddie mac downfall, by pushing low interest, but risky loans...Oscama profited from it..now, the taxpayer will bear the responsibility for repayment of the bail-out.

97. I think it's unfortunate that Oprah's mom is taking advantage of her celebrity. I would imagine that she gets a substantial allowance from Oprah already. It's too bad she can't just live within her means. I think this has been an ongoing theme in their relationship. Her mom is hoping to make Oprah feel guilty and just pay the bill. That wouldn't teach her mom anything. If the situation were reversed people would agree we shouldn't keep bailing our children out for making foolish choices. Same goes here.
