Celebrity Justice
Britney Spears -- The Trial Must Go On

Common sense has not prevailed.

Britney Spears' driving without a license trial will continue as scheduled, according to a ruling released today. Brit and her people were trying to have the case put on hold or dismissed entirely. But alas, things will go on as planned.

A pretrial hearing is set for tomorrow with the real thing set to begin next Wednesday.

Just a reminder -- this is a trial over a misdemeanor charge of driving without a valid California driver's license. It's not like she broke into a hotel room with a few armed friends in an attempt to steal back sports memorabilia. Priorities, people.

31. Just b/c she is famous (lol) doesn't mean she is above the law. A lot of these famous people seemed to think so. Hopefully the judge will do the whole world a favour and put this trainwreck of a family away for awhile.

Britney is the one who is insisting on a trial, you idiot. She could have easily settled this by paying a small fine and avoiding all the publicity, but she _chose_ to fight this in court.

... or at least her lawyers chose this course of action. It's doubtful that Britney has enough intelligence to make adult choices like this on her own.

33. No. 9, you beat me to it...my feelings exactly. We all know that if she gets her driver's license back, she WILL kill someone. It's only a matter of time.

When all else fails, site the lyrics of a Barretta theme song...douche!

35. All depends ... would the "case" be thrown out for "Joe Sixpack"? If so, it should be the same for Britney. If not, she should pay the fine and fuggetaboutit. Just asking b/c I recently went to traffic court (not in CA) all ready to pay my fine and the judge just dismissed it b/c the police officer who gave me the ticket wasn't there. I just went to pay the fine - I wasn't pleading not guilty. So, again, it depends on how the average people are treated in these cases - celebs should be treated the same way.

36. Wow I'm surprised you finally stood up for Britney!

I was stopped for driving without a license, (suspended due to failure to take a driver retraining course over a few minor traffic tickets!) and since I had my license by the time I went to court, it was dismissed. I was a young innocent looking girl so I used to get away with those things lol... but I've known people who have rec'd a big fine and probation for the same thing...

it would be VERY sad if the judge did not just dismiss the case or just give her a fine... she was going through a well publicized breakdown at that time and has made a lot of progress toward rebuilding her life...

37. People are out to get celebriies and, once again, a DA is trying to get political traction out of a midemeanor.

38. I don't care if she is getting better, she continually and knowingly broke the law and should face the music, period.

39. #10--Frank. You need to shut up. There's a lot more sense in #5's answer than in yours. Althou the charges for the hit-and-run were dismissed there was the video that showed, as #5 said, Britney saying "Did I hurt MY car?" and she didn't even look at or care about the other persons car. If you can't understand the point #5 was making that makes you the stupid one, not her/him.

40. All the court is doing is wanting to continue with prosecuting someone who broke the law. Get off this "They want publicity" BS. They are simply doing their job. If they dropped the charges the same crybabies would then be whining about Britney getting special treatment. A lot of us have gone to court for driving without a license. Being Britney Spears doesn't mean she doesn't have to. Laws apply to celebrities just like they apply to us nobodies. Driving without a license is a mousemeat charge yet some of you act like shes being tried for Murder 1.

41. This woman deserves big fines and even jail. For over the last year we all have read on TMZ and other sources including VIDEO that she cant drive, thats part of the reason she lost the kids. Britney will blow this off as most things in her life. She didnt even bother to show for court for her own kids.

42. Brit is a skankey, no talent, loser who doesn't give a damn about this. It will not affect her. She will blow this off just like she did her kids. B!TCH!!!!

43. Why have a trial for a crazy lady?? Britney is too mentally ill to assist in her own defense. The trail needs to go away because she will never be well enough to stand trial.

44. Hey, #41 Get a Clue:

The vast majority of people charged with driving without a license never see a court, they pay a fine and that is the end of it. The vast majority, so, why is she being singled out for trial. The prosecuitor who is running for public office has been asked many times by her lawyer what he wants to settle and he is demanding 1 year of probation plus a fine.

The demand for 1 year probation obviously scares her and her lawyer and I think in part because of what happened to Paris. During the year of probation can she be jailed for not using a turn signal?

So now she faces time in county jail, a fine, and probation. Far more punishment than the average person faces thus far more (no matter what) than the average person gets.

Just so you know her Louisiana license was without points or offenses as is her current California license. Someones driving ability is not determined by opinion or stories and staged pictures from the PaPs.

It is a violation of ethics in my book for a prosecuitor running for public office to hold on to a high profile case and milk it for publicity. This guy should have removed himself when the allegation of this first surfaced. It is an equal or worse ethical error for a judge to say publicly that he can not dismiss the case because it might show favoritism to her. He knows full well that there are many such charges that are dismissed because the person charged produced a valid California license. He also knows it is highly unusual for this charge to result in a trial.

This is a non moving traffic violation, why is it going to court and what felony case is on hold because of this rediculous publicity stunt.
