Bon Jovi Sued for

Giving Lyrics a Bad Name

10/11/2008 2:00 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Jon Bon Jovi is being sued for 400 bil -- yes, billion -- bucks by a Boston musician who says Jovi allegedly borrowed lyrics from his Boston Red Sox anthem entitled, "(Man I Really) Love This Team."

Samuel Bartley Steele, the front man for a band calling themselves "The Chelsea City Council," believes Bon Jovi heard his song while campaigning in Boston for John Kerry in '04, then used the lyrics in his own song entitled, "I Love This Town."

Regardless of the result, Steele really is livin' on a prayer if he thinks he's going to get that amount of cash.

A Bon Jovi spokesperson says they haven't seen the lawsuit yet.

Die hard Jovi fan here from 1983. There is not enough space ANYWHERE for me to begin to write "why" that is but for me, although I like other bands (very much) there is quite simply "no other band" for me. That being written and hopefully kept in mind as you read, Jovi has "done it before". Being that die hard fan I would just simply "dismiss, overlook, pretend" that "no I didn't hear that, it's a mistake"...I am so good at doing that, that I can't recall the other songs that I have heard...but one in particular Jovi song (because it's a major fav) is Blaze of Glory. I was listening to the radio one day and this song came on and I have dog ears when it comes to my band until I intently listened and realized it wasn't but the same lyrics were there and I was in shock. I thought this is someone ripping off my guys but when I listened past the end and heard the "year" of the tune I thought "how can he, why would he, do such a thing?". Then like the die hard I am I "dismissed" it because Bon Jovi is my band and I just couldn't let anything ruin that. That was the first time but it certainly wasn't the last. In this particular case I just listened to Love This Team and a word or two may be in there but sound wise, I'd have to say "no" it's not the same song but perhaps it did give birth to That's why I Love This Town...it's happened before folks and I was one of the "take a bullet for the band" crew...they could do no wrong, they were under appreciated, others were jealous but sometimes you have to wake up and smell the Philly Cheese steaks....

Angry Democrat 'Sky Blu' from LMFAO attack GOP Romney on Purpose .

Barack Obama and Durbin have both accused capitalism for the failure in the real estate market , without any responsiblity of their own failed democrat policies applied during the Clinton years. This policy was to obtain ‘affordable housing’ by any means (giving loans real estate loans to just about anyboby).
The fact that they do not take responsiblity is a Big problem if they get elected. The FINANCIAL CRISIS IS DUE TO THE POLICIES OF Goverment Runned Fanny Mae/ Freddy Mack . When two attempts at Reforms came in 2005 & 2006 they were Both BLOCKED BY The DEMOCRATS on the Congress Banking group , therefore, the Democrats Are Guilty for the Financial Crisis.
Not only are Barack Obama and Durbin Socialists , but they will Blame other groups of people for their own problems and Mis Management.

I'm a longtime die-hard Bon Jovi fan and I'm not saying Jon Bon Jovi would rip off some nobody but...

Keep the Faith's "If I was your Mother" (1992) is a complete rip-off of Prince's "If I was your Girlfriend" (1987)

The New Jersey song "Love for Sale" (1988) is a total rip of "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" (1979)

...and of course there's the countless Springsteen-like songs...so this guy suing him could have a case if he has a wary lawyer!

I think this is the biggest bunch of crap I've ever heard. First off 400 billion!!!! Second off Bon Jovi who wrote how many successful songs needs to steal a song from a guy in Boston he saw once and by stealing a song Man I really love this team to I really love this town...give it up...do you really need to steal that? Give Bon Jovi a little more credit than that! I hope the judge throws him out of court with laughter and hits him with the book for being a dumb dumb!!!!! People these days are so crass and will do anything to try and get money and fame...Mr. Joe nobody really thinks Bon Jovi stole his lyrics...yea I'm sure and Angelina Jolie stole my lips!

Okay #19, where did you get the info about the Prince and Escape song? I am a long time die hard fan also and have never heard that those songs were ripped off by Bon Jovi. They don't even sound the same!
And I love how you contradict yourself....I'm not saying BJ would rip someone off BUT.....

Bart is NOT suing Bon Jovi - he is suing Turner Broadcasting and MLB. Bon Jovi is a co-defendent in this case. He is also not alleging that the songs are the same; rather that the track used for the Bon Jovi video was taken from his song and the derivative works that Bart has copyrighted with ASCAP. In addition this is NOT about money (he is donating 99% of what he makes to artists) this is about changing copyright laws to protect the little guy. I have read the case and absolutly am convinced that this man has a case.

and i repeat he IS NOT SUING BON JOVI!!!!!!! he is suing TBS and MLB , bon jovi is a CO-DEFENDENT!! - it is quit possible that Bon Jovi is also a victim, although that is unknown!

I love Bovi Jovi so much. My car is "Bon Jovi all the time" all the CD's in my car are theirs. I cant start my day without listening to at least one song or two or three. I feel like this Steele person is of course insane to think he would get 400 billion he sounds like he should be in a straight jacket, Lets see he has a little band and would like some publicity (at JB's expense) so he can have his 15 minutes of fame and be someone (in his little world). I this is the case. I belive this song has been out for a while why is it that he just discoved "oh I think I'll sue that song sounds like mine"! What an idiot!
i really dont think that BJ needs to take anyone else's lyrics and make them their own. Do you actually think they are that stupid. You like a band you only want the best to happen to them they should alway have good Karma and make great songs with beautiful lyrics that have different meanings to each individual, are they really about things that affect them, maybe. All I know that sometimes we feel like we own them. We get involved with each band members personality and feel like they are one of us, the eveyday person. So when some jerk somes along and makes a lame attempt to ruin them well, we just cant have it. I am from NJ. We love them here. They can go anywhere here and I am told Jon is always kind to everyone he meets, I guess we feel like "these are our guys so cut the crap and go back to your boring little life with your stupid little band that probably arent
everyone he meets. I guess we feel like these are or guys so cut the crap and get a life". Jon, Richie, David, and Tio have so much talent they really dont need to take some lyric from your little song. You are a jerk!
The more publicity the media and everyone gives this guy the worse it will be because they giving him just what he wants he 15 mintes of fame, He had it, it's over. Get a life. Leave BJ's alone!

BlameItOnTheLoveOfRockNRoll

You've got to be kidding me... Clearly he just wants some fame.. I mean.. Samuel Bartley, who the hell is that guy?, I can't even find the lyrics of the song or the song on Youtube to compare it to I love this Town lol... Come on, Bon Jovi wouldn't do something like that, they are amazing songwriters, they don't need to copy someone else's song, The dude that's suing them just wants his 5 minutes of fame.
