Chrysler: Wear Leather or We'll Have Your Hide!

The suits at Chrysler must have purposely wanted to piss PETA off, because they just issued a mandate to their employees forcing them to wear leather (and only leather) shoes -- or they won't get a paycheck.

The memo sent to the car company's factory workers states: "... all employee's [sic] shall not wear any shoe with open toe or open heal, Canvas, Suede, Mesh, plastic, pleather or any shoe with a raised heel. Only shoes/boots of solid leather composition are allowed ..."

If workers don't have leather shoes on, they'll be sent home -- and Chrysler specifically threatens no pay if this occurs.

PETA already had a cow over the memo, of course, and sent Chrysler this letter of condemnation.

31. I do work at Chrysler and this requirement is clearly conveyed to all when you are hired. Also, you must wear safety glasses, protective sleeves, harnesses, and a myriad other SAFETY EQUIPMENT!!!, depending on your job, or a task that you are going to do.
Now since Chrysler pays for my healthcare and that of my family, I would wear whatever it is that they ask us for our own safety. Wow what a smart company … how novel that they care for the employees, unlike third world manufacturing.. and that is why they receive national safety awards.
“The National Safety Council has selected the Chrysler Group of DaimlerChrysler Corporation to receive the Council's 2004 Green Cross for Safety Medal. Chrysler Group receives this award in recognition of its vehicle safety innovations, support and sponsorship of public safety initiatives and its leadership in employee safety and health.”

As far as PETA, I believe in the ethical treatment of animals, not the stupidity of their members. Who are these people, Wall Street bankers?

33. I'm not sure about other states in the union, but I know here in Michigan, that is a MIOSHA(michigan industrial/ocupational safety and hazard) regulation. Anyone in Michigan who works in a manufacturing situation is REQUIRED to wear closed toed/covered heal full leather upper shoe, with no heal. Regardless of what PETA would like people to think this has NOTHING against them or thier beliefs.

36. Every work environment has some sort of dress and safety code, but the $64,000 question for 2008 is a company gay friendly or not.

37. Karen, you are the main reason why stupid people shouldn't breed.

38. The preposterous pompass punks @ PETA never cease to amaze me. One of my favorite PETA blunders was back in 1996 when they campaigned to have the town of Fishkill, NY change it's name since it "suggested cruelty to fish". They didn't bother to check that the word "kill" in DUTCH meant 'creek' or 'stream'. What a bunch of yahoos.

MAYBE THE USA SHOULD HUNT DOWN THESE TERRORISTS. I JUST MAY GO OUT AND BUY A CHRYSLER THIS WEEKEND!

41. WHAT ABOUT THIS...I GIVE MY DOGS PIG EARS......RAWHIDES TO CHEW ON SINCE IT IS IN THEIR NATURE TO HUNT AND WANT THESE CHEWS...WHAT ABOUT THE LEATHER COLLAR MY DOGS WEAR EVERYDAY.......WHAT ABOUT THE CHICKEN STRIPS I FEED MY DOG.......I WILL NOT TAKE MY DOGS TREATS AWAY FROM THEM...THE LEATHER COLLAR IS THE ONLY THING MY 200LB MASTIFF CANT GET AWAY FROM....AND I REFUSE TO USE A METAL CHOKER ON MY DOGS..THAT IS CRUEL...NOT EATING MEAT, WEARING LEATHER, EATING CHICKENS (I KNOW WHY THAT SLUT PAM ANDERSON WAS COMPLAINING...HER LEGS LOOK LIKE CHICKEN LEGS). PEOPLE HAVE BEEN EATING MEAT SINCE THE BEGINNING OF TIME, EVEN BEFORE HUMANS KNEW HOW TO FARM. PETA IS AS USELESS AS A SITCOM WITH PAM ANDERSON...

42. This is nuts. There have been safe non-leather workshoes available for both men and women for ages. Materials science has come a long way, and there are many synthetic materials tougher than leather now. Look up "bullet proof vests" to see what is stopping bullets these days, for instance. What century is Chrysler living in?

Steel-toed shoes and materials meeting certain safety standards are legitimate requirements. But it is illogical and improper to insist that people put dead animal skin on their feet when there are so many other options today. It's also a religious issue, so if they persist - I hope somebody drags them into court on this one.

43. jwoolman's comments are right on the mark. The other idiots on this comment page are obviously indifferent to the suffering of animals and our environment. And the racist remarks are especially crude. I guess I should just expect that from people who can't consider changing their behavior or respecting other people's values. As a member of PETA for many years, I agree that some of their campaigns are outrageous, but they definitely get press, which is what their mission is. Grow some compassion and a brain, people.

People Eating Tasty Animals!

45. you all that think peta people are idiots are the real idiots. did you read the letter? do you know anything about shoes? the LEATHER does NOT make the shoe safer! it is the steel toe. there is NO reason why all the employees need to be forced to wear leather shoes. leather makes NO difference in the strength. do your research, peta is trying to help.
